I completed by Bachelor of Engineering in the field of Electronics from Mumbai University. I have helped my classmates understand topics that were challenging. I have mentored my teammates in various software technologies while I was a mainframe developer. I have tutored kids from age 3 to 12 during my engineering days - I taught them Math Science and English. My favourite subjects to tutor are Algebra and Physics. Physics is really all around you. With subjects like Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus etc I believe its important to understand concepts rather than memorizing data/formula. A tricky problem can be simplified by reading the question multiple times, breaking it down into simpler steps. When I am not working, I love to spend my time doing yoga, workout, dance, cook and spend my time with my kids.

Q & A

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Start with really easy concepts/problems to begin with to build confidence.

What is your teaching philosophy?

It's more important to understand concepts than get all the answers correct.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Try to understand the student's comfort level with the subject and accordingly pace myself - if I need to start with complete basics or jump to advanced topics.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I'd build his/her confidence by starting with simple problems and increasing the complexity as he/she starts getting more comfortable.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Share my personal experiences, where I struggled during my engineering days. It is okay to have a hard time with studying - everyone does at some point. It's important to not give up.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If all else fails, I would start fresh the next day. Sometimes all you need is a fresh mind and a new day to get everything right.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Read the questions multiple times. Oftentimes we misunderstand the questions in a hurry to get everything answered.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

It's important to know the comfort level of any student with the subject and approach accordingly. Jumping into abstract concepts won't help when the student doesn't have much background.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Make sure the material is simple and straightforward. Also, frame some simple questions based on the material, and have the student work on those with me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start simple, and gradually build to complex modules/problems.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking relevant questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Everyone learns at a different pace. It's important not to rush or go too slow.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would prefer to check with the student beforehand and use the same material, if possible.
