Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that teaching is just more than training a student in a particular subject. It is about educating and helping someone acquire knowledge.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session, I will tell the student that he or she is my first client so that I can help the student properly.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will probably make the subject fun by explaining real-life examples or something that could be easily related to them so that they can find the subject more interesting.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will explain the concept to the student as if I am explaining it to a six-year-old just by using simple language, avoiding big words, and giving examples.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Giving a lot of practice with a different variety of problems and teaching them to analyze each problem before doing it can help them become an independent student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Motivate them by discussing what they don't like about the subject and make a list of what could be done to get interested.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

First, I would explain everything to the student about the concept and ask them if they have any questions, and then I will give them a problem and ask them to explain to me how they will solve it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Repetition is the key to master any subject. Having information about the subject is not enough; utilizing it builds the confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Ask them what they already know and ask them what they are confused about.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Dry erase board, calculator (if needed), pen, notebook, etc.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Probably give a brief explanation of the comprehension and the logistics behind the match of correct answer with the question may help the student.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Ask students and determine what they have to learn, and then teach them in a manner which is easy to remember.
