My desire to teach and work with students developed very early in my life. I started working with students in after school programs when attending high school. Building deeper understanding and the developing life long learners has been an under lying goal for as long as I can remember.

This past fall, I retired after teaching for 31 years. My experience during that time has ranged from working with special needs students in a self contained classroom, resource room, and general education classroom. Helping students as well as fellow educators to better meet the needs of all students is instrumental for success. As a regular education teacher of third and fifth grade students, I was responsible for all subject areas. During the last decade of my teaching career, my primary focus was mathematics in a middle school setting. I was responsible to teaching 7th and 8th grade mathematics, pre-algebra, algebra, and some geometry topics. As a Title I Coach, I was responsible for meeting the needs of students ranging from 5th through 8th grade. Developing individualized plans for students struggling to understanding the mathematics curriculum was an area of personal success!

All students are able to learn! We just need to figure out how to help them unlock the doorway to their personal success!

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students are able to learn they just need the right setting with the right person to make the connections needed to turn the light bulb on their path of education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Personal relationships are the key to any connection. Knowing someone's goals and interest is the key to unlocking their abilities. Listening is the key to understanding a solution. The first person that needs to listen is the teacher.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The key to independence as a lifelong learner is building a foundation of skills. A strong foundation is the key to everything. Once a foundation is established, a student will gain confidence which will allow them to research problems and answers in an independent manner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Building success is the best motivation. Once a person sees that they are able to complete the task at hand correctly, they are willing to continue with the process. In the beginning, success might be very small steps, but these gains will be very motivational in reaching the overall learning or lifetime goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When someone is struggling to understand a concept, it is important to understand their missing links. It might seem like going backwards, but that foundation is the building block for future knowledge. So as a tutor, I would listen to what they are asking, analyze their work, and try to offer alternative approaches to solving a problem. It is also helpful to make a problem as real life as possible while using hands on tools to reach a solution.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Comprehension is easier when taken in smaller portions, whether it is a reading question or math question. Again, everything must be broken into understandable pieces to be able to comprehend the bigger idea.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Connections of any type are always helpful. What do they do? What are their favorite subjects? What are their fears? As well as listening to their personal interests, I need to share a piece of myself. Relationships are the key to any successful connection.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Building a deeper understanding and foundation of the subject matter builds an excited and engaged student. It is also helpful to connect the subject matter to real life for a future connection to their adult life.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Whenever possible, I try to use hands on materials/methods to build an understanding. The more senses that we engage in the learning process the easier it is to understand the subject matter at hand. Listening to their concerns and misunderstandings is also key. Rebuilding that foundation will be key to future understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Success builds confidence!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Listening to what they are saying is the first step in the evaluation process. Looking at their ability with a select problem is also necessary. Understanding the end goal is also needed to develop a plan to accomplish the task at hand.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

The key is to listen to what the student understands or misunderstands. Building on previous learning if possible. Offering alternative approaches when needed. The student guides the process. Reaching their individual needs is a unique process.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The hands on materials would be dictated by the subject/concepts being covered.
