What is your teaching philosophy?
I think it's best to work together to make sure that the student fully understand the concepts before moving on.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to get to know the student and his/her learning style so that we can create a plan that will work best for them.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I like to provide my students with good study habits to help them become independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would show them how far they've come and how much they've accomplished so that they can remind themselves of their end goal and what they are capable of.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I like to try and figure out a different approach that might work better for the student to better understand the material.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would try and suggest activities that they could do in their free time to work on and practice their comprehension skills. There are a lot of resources available to help improve these skills.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like to get to know the student personally first before attempting to teach them. This allows me to develop a bond with them and figure out the best methods to use.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would try and provide little rewards at each milestone for the student to keep them engaged in learning and understanding the material.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would quiz the student periodically to make sure that they understand the concepts. I also think it's a great idea to have them explain the material to me or someone else to further reinforce the knowledge.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I like to keep track of the concepts that the student has covered so that they can see their progress and hopefully gain confidence in their abilities.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I like to talk to the student and get to know him/her and what he/she wants.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Again, I try to determine how the student is most comfortable learning and try to do more of what they respond positively to.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I like to use videos and PowerPoints because they keep the students engaged. I am also a fan of writing notes to reinforce the subject material.
