I am a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. I double majored in Marketing and Administrative Management. I graduated with a 3.98 GPA. After college, I worked in mortgage banking briefly and then began my family. While raising my children, I worked in mental health with the Employee Assistance Program. Eventually, I decided to get into the area of education and became a substitute teacher for grades K-12 for two years. I then moved to higher education and worked across the board in higher ed. I ended up in Human Resources where I stayed until I decided to leave and concentrate on working a job from home. Through the years, I have subbed for a variety of subjects and also tutored my own children as well as helped out with some college-aged students. I am a life-long learner and love to keep up on current events. I enjoy working with students to help them learn a subject matter. I do this by understanding each student and their specific needs. I believe that learning should be fun and apply to real life situations. I really enjoy math from K to Algebra. I also have a passion for literature and the English language. I spent many years editing students' English papers. I have also had the opportunity to work in adult education, as I was called upon to host continuing legal education training and to teach classes for the Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training. Because of my long career in government, I also very much enjoy teaching social studies and criminal justice programs. I feel that bringing real world experience on top of academia lends me a unique perspective in those areas.

I have a Master degree in Spanish from the University of Louisville with emphasis in Cultural Studies. I was born in El Salvador and as a native speaker, I have strong handle in Spanish phonetics and grammar studies theory. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Kentucky University in criminology studies. I worked as a social worker for the Cabinet Health Family Services (CHFS) in Kentucky for over twenty years as a child protective services investigator. I was also the deemed qualified Spanish interpreter for the region to provide assistance to the Hispanic population. I have worked as a substitute teacher for the High School Students at the Ft. Knox school and have tutored for the Hardin County High Schools. I have the knowledge and solid understanding in the Spanish linguistic arena which has allowed me to provide relaxed and fun activities to my students. A quality education is the most fundamental civil right for students.The goal of a quality education is for each student to achieve their maximum potential allowing them to make informed and intentional choices for post -secondary education and careers. Each student, all grades and ages, has unique learning and personal strengths and needs. I have earned a B.M.E. (Bachelor of Music Education), M.Ed. (Master of Education in Education in Administration & Curriculum) and Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration & Curriculum). While these formal education programs have been of great value to me, professional development during my years as an educator kept me focused on research based, effective teaching practices. The most significant professional development activities for me follow. 1) Working with district teachers to assure all students were at reading grade level exiting third grade. Students must be proficient readers to succeed in all academic subjects. Students who are proficient readers are proficient writers and students who are proficient writers are proficient readers. 2) I worked with a nationally known mathematics consultant and district math teachers to design a curriculum and teaching strategies focused on all freshmen being ready for algebra I. We focused on preschool through grade 8 and a common math curriculum for all high school students. Students who read proficiently, write proficiently and do math proficiently are ready for academic success in all content areas and to make informed personal choices for higher education and careers. These students typically earn better grades, score better on standardized tests and meet or exceed benchmark scores on the ACT and SAT. Listening to music, enjoying drama and dance and following collegiate and professional sports are among my personal interests. Traveling to visit our granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law and having them visit us are at the top of our priority list.
