I have been teaching and tutoring math for 25+ years. I love math and I especially love helping to make math easier for students. I know how frustrating math can be and I can make is simpler for you!! I have been a high school an middle school teacher. I taught in a small school where I was the only math teacher so I taught all subjects so I know them all!!

I was born and raised in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I attended George Fox University for my undergraduate work. I earned my Bachelor's of Art in Writing/Literature and Religious Studies. I also had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Paraguay. After taking a year off to save up money, I returned to school at Western Oregon University, and I earned my Master's of Art in Teaching. Two days after receiving my diploma, I was offered a job to teach here in Arizona.I have always had a desire to learn and grow and I wish to inspire that desire in others. This is why I became a teacher. This is my third year teaching in the Vail School District and while there have been challenges, I have never had such a rewarding experience. When the light bulb moment happens with a student, it is the best feeling in the world. Throughout my experience as a Teacher, I have found that not all of students learn the same way, and that some take more time to grasp certain concepts. I know that this feeling can be discouraging for a student because I felt that way in certain subject areas. I strive to keep an open mind and positive attitude in all that I do.In my spare time, I try to catch up on my reading. I also enjoy a good Netflix marathon, especially when I have ice cream or pop corn available. If I am feeling extra energetic, you might find me on a run or a hike.
I am a PhD candidate in the field of environmental studies (Antioch University New England). Previously, I received a BA in psychology (George Fox University) and a Masters of Divinity (Princeton Theological Seminary). My varied disciplinary background makes me an ideal tutor in many fields, and I enjoy them all: the humanities, History, the Sciences, Math, politics, Social Sciences, religion, and care for the planet. One of my most useful skills is editing. I enjoy reading others' writing and helping create a finished product that shares the author's intended meaning clearly. I am an adjunct professor for undergraduates and masters students, so I know what college professors expect in a paper. I am also available to help you prepare for standardized tests, including the GED, SAT, and GRE.When I'm not involved in academic work, I enjoy being active: running, biking, hiking, and spending time outside. I like to garden, and eat healthy food I grew myself. I have young kids who keep me on the go, always challenging me to learn new things and explore the world in different ways.As your tutor, I hope to get to know you and your interests, your goals, and your passions, and to connect the subjects we work on to your particular goals and interests.

I think that education should be fun...Let's make learning fun!
I am a retired author and speaker. I wrote 13 books (five bestsellers) and spoke to large and small audiences all around the US and Canada for 20 years including Promise Keepers Canada, MOPs conventions, military special forces, Prison inmates, men's retreats and marriage conferences. During that time I also operated a non profit organization called Better Dads. Programs included a mentoring program for fatherless boys in partnership with Multnomah University called Standing Tall, a free camp for single moms and their kids, workshops for women on raising boys and fathers, Books for Soldiers, weekend campouts for non custodial fathers and their sons, prison talks, and a Father Daughter conference to heal fathers and his teenage daughters relationship. Prior to that I owned and operated an environmental engineering firm for 16 years. I am a navy veteran with an honorable discharge.

I have always been passionate about helping others, and have always found fulfillment in learning and sharing new information, skills, and techniques. I have worked for the past 12 years to build my career as an educator.During the last 8 years, I have worked with elementary and preschool aged children, in the classroom and online. I started as an educational assistant, and received my Bachelors of Elementary Education, with an ESOL endorsement, from George Fox University in the spring of 2019. I then became a substitute teacher and an online ESOL teacher. This year, I have had the amazing opportunity to work in a Montessori preschool. I cannot put into words how fortunate I was to find this position. I have learned so much, and have found a teaching style that aligns more closely with my philosophy - children are more capable than we often expect.Through these experiences, I have learned that I enjoy teaching all subjects, but, because I have witnessed my husband's struggles with dyslexic, I am most passionate about literacy. I believe that my life's purpose is to help children learn, grow, and overcome their challenges.
I am a passionate creative writer, literary scholar, and linguist, who recently graduated from George Fox University with a Bachelor's of Arts in English and a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). My school experience has thus imbued me with fresh knowledge pertaining to the English language, the Spanish language, teaching, and writing. As an aspiring professor of literature with eight years of experience studying Spanish, I possess boundless love for language--as well as stories. I relish any opportunity to help impart this passion to others.
I am a married father of two young children. Currently I teach 7th grade math in Mesa, Arizona. I am in my thirteenth year of teaching (I taught sixth-grade/all content areas for the first 11 years of my career). I am capable of tutoring all core elementary subjects and tutoring math at the middle grades/junior high level. I received my Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Portland State University, and later a Masters Degree in Teaching from George Fox University. I have previously tutored students in after school programs for Mesa Public Schools. One of my favorite things to do is read, I read some sort of non-fiction every night before going to bed. I am a huge sports fan, of the Portland Trailblazers and Oregon Ducks in particular! I look forward to meeting with you online or in person and helping you to reach your academic goals!
Who am I?I am a recent M.Ed graduate and soon-to-be-licensed Reading Specialist, currently working towards my Middle/High School English Language Arts and Social Studies endorsements. I enjoy the balanced give-and-take of working with teenagers, and spend most of my time during the school year substituting at the middle and high schools in my area.More specifically (for those of you who've decided to keep reading past the introduction blurb above :-D ), I'm a two-time graduate of George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon; I earned my Bachelor's in Elementary Education in 2012 and my Master of Education and ML/HS Reading Specialist degree just this past April. As a part of my graduate school studies, I completed an Action Research project working with high school seniors in a Language Arts support classroom; my focus was on the positive impact that can result from giving students a voice in their own education. Prior to making the move to GFU, I studied paraeducation (instructional assisting, often in special education settings) at Portland Community College and psychology and sociology at Chemeketa Community College. For the past five years, I've worked as a substitute teacher for schools in and around Newberg; my favorite classes to sub in tend to be high school and middle school Social Studies and English Language Arts, which is why I'm currently working towards earning my official teaching endorsement in those areas. I've also occasionally taught (or attempted to, if necessary ^_^) Spanish, Health, Yearbook, Oregon Ecology, Horticulture, sixth grade math, Band, and Choir-- which, because I can't sing, conduct, or read vocal music to save my life, once involved watching the first half of "Kubo and the Two Strings" a total of six times in one day. One of my bucket list items now is to someday watch the second half as well... not six times, just once, thank you very much :-DWhen I'm not subbing or tutoring, I enjoy reading mysteries, psychological thrillers, fantasy/sci fi, and young adult fiction. When I'm not subbing or reading, I enjoy watching favorite shows (Agents of SHIELD, Arrow, The Flash, Firefly, and Doctor Who, among others) with my 3 teenagers. And when I'm not subbing, tutoring, reading, or watching Netflix, I'm probably either sleeping or drinking coffee :-) Such is the luxurious life of a Varsity Tutor!
I love teaching and I love learning. I have 10 years experience working with kids to help them find their love of learning.
I have over 30 years working with students of all ages. My primary work has been with teenagers. I have degrees in Special Education, Secondary Language Arts (High School), and School Administration. I am currently certified to teach PP-12th grade. My most recent teaching experience was 12 years in a public high school as a Resource Room teacher where I was exposed to multiple subject areas in all grades. I have taught academic and study skills, learning strategies classes and High School Literature and Composition classes. I am looking forward to helping your child improve their skills in reading comprehension and fluency as well as writing across content areas.I believe that children learn best when provided with real world, hands-on experiences that are challenging and collaborative. Students are capable of more than they know and will push their own perceived limits when given a supportive learning environment. My goal is to provide this environment to students whether I am working with them 1:1 through tutoring, or in small or large groups in the classroom. Lessons should help children not only learn facts, but help them make sense of the world and their own place in it.
