Though I'm now a few years removed from academia, I still consider myself an intellect at heart. Stints at New York University's Stern School of Business and Northwestern University have given me extensive scholastic training, and running my own private tutoring service throughout college as a means of making a living has helped me exercise and refine my skill set as a personal academic instructor. Partnering up with Varsity Tutors has provided me with a golden opportunity to continue helping students hone their own academic performance across a wide array of subjects, and my own tutoring background, coupled with my flexible schedule as a by-day real estate investor and independent business owner who possesses total control over his hours, puts me in a unique position to better accommodate the students I work with to ensure that they receive the attention and quality service they deserve.

I am a registered nurse that earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Duke University School of Nursing and a Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Studies from the University of Richmond. As a dedicated tutor with experience supporting students from Duke University School of Nursing and serving as a teaching assistant in microbiology, I am passionate about making education in the biological and medical sciences both accessible and enjoyable. I specialize in tutoring a range of subjects including Biology/AP Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Medical Terminology, and Nursing School courses such as Fundamentals, Pathophysiology, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Maternity Nursing, and Pediatric Nursing. I also provide preparation for standardized exams like the NCLEX and TEAS. My favorite subjects to teach are the biological and medical sciences, as I find the human body to be an endlessly fascinating puzzle - one that is both complex and rewarding to explore. I strive to create a warm, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where students feel supported and empowered. I believe that education should never be a source of frustration or negative emotions; instead, it should be an opportunity for growth, confidence, and curiosity. In my sessions, I use concise, easy-to-follow reviews, practice questions, critical thinking exercises, and the teach-back method to ensure deep understanding and long-term retention. I also emphasize real-world applications of the material, helping students make meaningful connections that stick. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy arts and crafts, reading mystery novels, playing the flute, and spending quality time with my cat, Lilo. I look forward to helping you reach your academic goals with confidence and clarity

Personal Statement Mathematics is a very challenging discipline. In addition to it being challenging and demanding, it is also intimidating. Anyone who has ever spent hours working on math problems has learned to respect this area of specialty. Academia, however, is seeing an influx of students who enter each course wondering if that particular course will turn out to be the one that will derail their career dreams. Students are fully aware of the difficult task that lies before them and despite their best efforts they are still not successful. As a result, educators have the daunting task of identifying student's abilities, diagnosing and treating fear, in addition to teaching them the new material. A major component of my teaching philosophy deals with the fear component. Let me contest that I do not believe that students are lazy or incompetent but rather they are disgruntled and misinformed; that they somehow strayed away due to constant failures in mathematics. Failure can be constructive as long as it is dealt with quickly and by someone who knows the path to success. The problem is that this usually doesn't happen. Students typically work independently and without guidance. Students typically underestimate the time needed to learn the concepts needed; take too many complex courses while juggling a career and a family; but the greatest cause, in my opinion, is fear and anxiety, fear of not knowing where to begin and fear that their best efforts in the study process will still cause them to fail. As a result, students tend to avoid the issue altogether. As I am nearing my twentieth year as an educator, I am still dealing with this obstacle. There is no simple solution and I certainly will not devalue a student's education. Instead, I have felt that I should simply be honest about the task at hand. We as educators should make it clear that persistence is the key here and that there will be few chances at instant gratification. Mathematics is one of those courses that require a lot of investment in one's time and energy before results are shown. My convictions on mathematics and education in general are that people will always fear what they do not understand. It is the responsibility of the instructor to reduce that fear by presenting the material in such a way that students can understand and ultimately build confidence. All of these things can be done without compromising the goals of the course. Awareness on the part of the student will help immensely in eliminating the fear of mathematics. It is with this charge that I took up a career in education. I wanted a career that would allow me to assist students in becoming exceptional communicators, logical thinkers, and independent learners. By collaborating with students in their own education, we together can bring about successful mathematics instruction and enlist in students a feeling of pride, enjoyment, and appreciation of mathematics.

My name is Tori and I am excited to support and guide you while you rock your way to meeting your learning goals! I have a degree in English and I am a certified English teacher as well, and I am fluent in Spanish, too! My journey helping others started more than 10 years ago... I started tutoring when I was in college and I soon realized I loved helping classmates find their aha! moment. It was priceless! After this, I decided my career path was in Education, and I worked towards getting a certification. I have worked in a classroom setting in person and online for about 5 years! Having struggled with some subjects, like Chemistry, while I was a freshman, also gives me a fresh perspective to tutoring. I needed help and I appreciate the experts who helped me succeed. Because of this, I'm aware that students will need help with content, but also building their confidence with the subject, and working through the anxiety or fear they may have by the time they connect with a tutor. But don't worry: I am here to support you in the way that fits best your learning style, prior knowledge, and timelines! I currently tutor full time and love every minute of it! While I have worked with students from Elementary School level to College students, I thoroughly enjoy, and I'm an expert working with students in Middle School and High School. I can meet with students individually, or in a group setting. My favorite subjects are Literature and Conversational Spanish. I also have extensive experience working with struggling students in organizational skills, test taking strategies and executive functioning. I look forward to supporting you in your learning journey: your goals are my #1 priority!

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in preparing for a wide range of professional certifications, including IT certifications (CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft), project management (PMP, CAPM), finance and accounting (CPA, CFA), healthcare credentials (NCLEX, pharmacy technician), and many others. Tutors can work with you on exam-specific content, test-taking strategies, and practice problems tailored to your certification's format and requirements.
One-on-one instruction allows tutors to identify exactly where you're struggling and adapt their teaching to fill those gaps, rather than having you spend time on concepts you already understand. Personalized tutoring also provides accountability, structured study plans, and the ability to ask questions immediately when you're confused. Research on learning shows that individualized instruction significantly accelerates progress compared to self-study alone.
Preparation timelines vary widely depending on your starting knowledge, the specific certification, and how frequently you meet with your tutor. Some certifications require 2-3 months of focused study, while others may take 6+ months. Your tutor can assess your baseline knowledge and create a realistic timeline with specific milestones, helping you stay on track to meet your certification deadline.
Yes. Tutors work with students at all knowledge levels, from those brand-new to a field to those with substantial experience. If you're making a career transition, your tutor can start with foundational concepts and progressively build your knowledge toward certification-level competency. This scaffolded approach helps you develop both the conceptual understanding and practical skills needed to succeed on your exam and in your new role.
Effective strategies include breaking complex topics into smaller, manageable pieces; using practice exams repeatedly to identify weak areas; and spacing out your study sessions over time rather than cramming. A tutor helps by explaining difficult technical concepts in ways that stick, creating focused practice plans, and providing feedback on your progress. This combination of targeted instruction and strategic practice leads to stronger retention and better exam performance.
Your tutor can help you assess readiness through practice exams, diagnostic reviews, and honest conversations about your confidence level. Most certification exams have published study guides and pass rates you can reference. A good benchmark is consistently scoring at or above the passing threshold on full-length practice tests under exam conditions. Your tutor can also help you decide if you need more preparation time or if you're ready to schedule your exam.
Varsity Tutors works with tutors across many industries and certification types. If you're preparing for a specialized certification, reach out with details about the exam and field—tutors often have expertise in niche areas, and we may be able to connect you with someone who's a great fit. Even if a direct specialist isn't available, tutors skilled in related subjects can often help you master the material and exam strategies.
