Hello! I am a teacher who has stepped away from the classroom after 14 years of teaching math- ranging from 7th grade to 12th grade! Now, I am very excited to start tutoring students just like yourself! My favorite part of teaching, especially math, is helping a learner gain confidence in his or her ability and see that everyone, and anyone, can be a 'math person'!

My passion for helping students comes from my life-long goal to always be learning and growing. I believe teamwork, hard work, and individual application are keys to success.Recently, I graduated from Brigham Young University - Idaho with B.S. in Elementary Education and Teaching. With that degree I also have an emphasis in Social Studies that allows me to teach middle grades. Through my college and work experiences, I have been able to work with students from first grade to eighth with a variety of personalities, interests, and needs. I have loved every minute of it! Including those students who were difficult and defiant because I never gave up on them and we learned how to work together to achieve that which was once difficult. I also worked with special needs children and adults during my college career. It was a challenge, but one of the best jobs I've ever had! From it I developed patience and more of an understanding that we all learn at different paces and in different ways.Subjects I am able to tutor and feel most confident are, of course, all elementary subjects including reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I also am confident in tutoring music as I played the clarinet for 7+ years and am self-taught on the piano. Further subjects I can tutor are life sciences, nutrition, and anatomy. Before becoming a teacher, I was studying Nursing and took CNA classes my Senior year of High School. All of these subjects are a joy to teach for me because of my experiences and passion for them.My teaching philosophy is simple: I believe in hard work in myself and with my students. Just as the world continues to grow and develop by relying on everyone and everything, I believe we all need to rely on each other in order to best reach our potentials.Outside of working and teaching, I enjoy reading historical fiction, watching movies, being outdoors, specifically biking, rollerblading, fishing, and simply walking. I enjoy spending time with handsome husband, as well.Being a born and bred Midwestern girl, I am proud of my heritage. Attending a college in the West that neighbored the Tetons provided dozens of wonderful opportunities to grow, but I never forgot where I came from. I am a graduate of Ohio University with a MA of Spanish which includes the study of language, linguistics, literature and culture. I am have BA of Spanish and Secondary Education from Westminster College. Since graduation, I have been a teacher of Spanish for 7 years, and in that time I have had a wide range of experiences, both teaching and tutoring Spanish, with students from elementary school to high school to adult students. For all ages, my teaching style is that of immersion. No matter the level of the student, Spanish is spoken 90% of the time. However, I use language that is simple and can easily be understood; so, in other words words that sound similar in Spanish and English and gestures to help the students grasp meaning quickly. I am a bit of a nerd so I also enjoy teaching about the culture and history of the countries that speak Spanish, and when I can, I provide a history of the language itself and how we went from Latin to Spanish.As a tutor, I am a guide rather than a giver of answers. I believe that learning happens when students can come to the correct conclusion on their own. If I instantly give answers, then what does the student learn? I also understand that seeking help is not easy, that is why I try to provide a safe zone for the student where they feel comfortable enough to ask questions and get the help they need.Learning a new language is unlike any other subject and it is a fascinating and life changing process. I love teaching Spanish because I get to see my students??? minds getting bigger and becoming more open. A language is a system of codes and symbols that help us communicate information, and by adding another language you are doubling that system and doubling the amount of information that you can communicate, and I love when students find that they have new ways of expressing themselves; they understand themselves so much more deeply and as a result they are able to understand others. Their view of the world increases because a language is inseparable from the culture and history that created it. When people are able to connect to another culture, the quality of life of everyone improves. That is why I feel learning another language, any language, is so important to our development as individuals and as a society, and why I feel so strongly about teaching it.

I am a junior at Harvard College studying the History of Science. I enjoy helping students overcome their academic frustrations and working towards comfort in their toughest subjects. I know the feeling of pride that comes with understanding complicated material! My passion for tutoring has led me to multiple previous academic coaching positions. I have a strong background in guiding high schoolers though their experiences, from helping them succeed in their classes to preparing them for the SAT to helping them apply to college. I have most recently started private individual tutoring sessions with high schoolers in Algebra and English. In the summer of 2019, I coached secondary school students at the prestigious Maru-a-Pula private school in Gaborone, Botswana, on the college admissions process and SAT preparation. I also have experience teaching younger students; my first teaching role was as an instructor at a gymnastics summer camp, where I taught young campers elementary school curricula, making my own lessons for each grade level. My years of practice have made me confident in my ability to work with many different ages of students and adapt to each student's individual learning and communication style. Outside of tutoring, I love staying active I am a member of my school's cheerleading team and I enjoy hiking and skiing.

As such, I use these traits as often as possible in order to create an atmosphere of optimal growth.I have two Masters degrees--one in English Textual Studies and one in Philosophy. I am also getting a PhD in Philosophy.
