I am a current student at Yale University pursuing a degree in English. Since I was little, writing and storytelling has been one of my biggest passions. Though back then, I often told stories to my friends and family as though they were truth, once they helped me find the page I've had much, much more success. I have been tutoring kids since I was in high school, but I've also spent many hours working with kids on the baseball diamond as a coach, as well as as a camp counselor. My philosophy is that I know how hard and difficult (and sometimes annoying) high school English and History classes can be, and my goal is to try and bring a little fun back into the material while making sure we do what it takes to master your craft as a budding young writer, whether in a rhetorical analysis of Pride and Prejudice or in your CommonApp personal essay.

I am friendly, communicate well, and capable of adapting my teaching style to meet every student's needs. As a student and as a tutor, I understand the difficulties both face and look to build my tutoring style around my tutee. As a young tutor, I can also relate well to students. Having taken many of the same courses and exams only a few years ago, I understand what it takes to succeed and am willing to go the extra mile to make sure my students enjoy the same success. I'm Czarina Alfonso, a junior at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. In high school, I was a honors student with membership in the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Math Honor Society. I was also a member of my school's Diversity Council and president of the medical club. Since I'm currently a chemistry major/premed student, I have lots of experience with STEM related courses (AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Calculus, AP Statistics). I've also taken both AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature. In addition to my AP course load in high school, I also studied for multiple SAT subject tests (Bio 790, Math 2 770, Chem 770) and the SAT (770M, 770ERW). Outside of academics, I did lots of volunteer work (founded nonprofit called Give It a Shot that raises money to provide pneumonia vaccines to daycare aged children in the Philippines, worked at local hospital, peer tutored at school) and played a sport (fencing) at a national level. I have experience tutoring students of all ages in a variety of topics including test prep (ACT, AP Exams, etc.) and general science/math course tutoring. I have a long list of resources that can provide alternative ways to learn, whether that's through well-written textbooks, videos, or interactive virtual tools. I am patient and encourage questions, and will work with a student step-by-step until they understand it well enough to answer it on their own.

I am working to obtain a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry. With that said, I tutor many STEM based subjects, along with ACT tests and strategies. My current favorite subject is General Chemistry, but my favorite changes every so often. My tutoring style is based off trying to get to know every student I work with and their unique thought processes.

I am a recent graduate of Brown University (2012- GPA 3.7) where I graduated with degrees in English Literature and Theatre Arts. I have always had a passion for teaching, first fostering this interest as a teacher's aid in my school's Lower School and as a camp counselor for a number of years. Teaching and education continued to be an important part of my collegiate life as well. As far as hobbies are concerned, I love Photography and travel writing.
