I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2016. Since then, I have been a process engineer at a major oil and gas company in the Houston, TX area. As a chemical engineer, I have extensive experience with developing heat/material balances, troubleshooting and optimizing heat and mass transfer equipment, and using process simulation software.Outside of chemical engineering-specific areas, I am able to tutor in most math, chemistry, and physics subjects at levels from middle school through college. I can also provide tutoring in some SAT and SAT 2 subject tests. My favorite subject to tutor is math. I have loved math for as long as I can remember. To me, solving a math problem is like solving any other problem in life - you combine the information you are given, assumptions you can make, and your expertise and prior knowledge to derive a conclusion. I appreciate being able to help students develop these types problem solving skills through math because of how applicable they are to non-math scenarios.

I am a Computer Science-Statistics and Psychology double major at Columbia University. I have been a tutor for three years, specializing in college-bound high school students and middle school children. While I have experience tutoring many subjects, my favorites are Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. I did not discover my passion for these subjects until college (I was admitted to Columbia as pre-law for my writing), and I wish I had been exposed to the fun aspects of these subjects at younger age. Often we are discouraged from science and math while young by phrases like "I'm just not a math person," when the reality is that everybody learns math differently. These subjects are my favorite to tutor because it is incredibly rewarding to facilitate a previously-struggling student's confidence and understanding.

I am a graduate of Stony Brook University. I doubled majored in both Applied Mathematics and Psychology. I started my journey of tutoring when I was in high school. During my high school years, I started as a volunteer at a tutoring center assisting Kindergarten kids to 3rd graders with Math, English, and Art. Slowly, I became an afterschool tutor and loved the fulfilling feeling after seeing my student's betterment. Moving on to college, I carried on that passion for tutoring and become a Teacher Assistant for both Multivariable Calculus and Financial Mathematics classes to help my peers with their questions on class materials. After graduating from college, I helped my friend in prepping for her GRE because I wanted her to study more effectively for the test instead of wasting time trying out different studying techniques and various test prep materials. While I tutored a broad range of subjects, I am the most passionate about tutoring math as I have firm confidence in my knowledge of mathematics, and I mostly helped students with their math courses. During my tutoring experiences, I am a tutor who likes to utilize examples and real-life scenarios in my explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Newark has 20 school districts serving over 59,000 students across 93 schools, and Varsity Tutors connects students from all of them with personalized instruction. Whether your student attends a Newark Public School, a charter school, or a private institution, we match them with tutors who understand the specific curriculum and standards they're working with.
Newark's average student-teacher ratio of 13.9:1 means many students don't get the individualized attention they need to master challenging concepts. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills that gap by allowing tutors to focus entirely on your student's learning pace, learning style, and specific areas of struggle—something that's difficult in a traditional classroom setting.
Tutors connected through Varsity Tutors are familiar with New Jersey's learning standards and assessment expectations, including the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) across subjects like math, ELA, science, and social studies. They tailor instruction to ensure students build the skills and knowledge required for grade-level success and standardized assessments.
Students for students in Newark seek help across a wide range of subjects, with math and English language arts being the most common. We also connect students with tutors for science, social studies, test prep (including SAT and ACT), and language learning. The specific needs vary by grade level and individual student goals.
The first session is focused on getting to know your student—their learning style, current strengths, challenges, and goals. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically and discuss a personalized plan for moving forward. This foundation helps ensure that every session that follows is targeted and effective.
Start by telling us about your student's needs and goals. Varsity Tutors will match them with an expert tutor who fits their learning style and academic focus. Once matched, you'll schedule your first session and begin personalized instruction tailored to your student's pace and goals.
Absolutely. Whether your student is struggling with fractions in elementary math, algebra in middle school, or complex essay writing in high school, personalized tutoring targets those specific gaps. Tutors break down difficult concepts into manageable pieces and use practice and feedback to build real understanding—not just test-taking tricks.
Varsity Tutors works with students on all kinds of goals—raising grades, preparing for the SAT or ACT, getting ready for AP exams, mastering a challenging subject, or accelerating ahead of grade level. Tutors create a customized plan based on your student's specific objective and timeline, making sure instruction stays focused and measurable.
