Statistics Tutoring review by Alexis in Mokena, IL
We focused on compositions of functions and their domains. The student seemed to have a good grasp on this before we left the subject. We then worked on exponential equations with common bases, and began looking at logarithmic equations.

Statistics Tutoring review by Richard in Mokena, IL
I helped the student with his homework difficulties. The problems were about solving families of 2 equations. The methods included graph sketching, substitution and elimination of a variable. Then we looked at new work which was Gaussian elimination for 3 equations. He is attentive and seems to catch on quickly.

Statistics Tutoring review by Ashlie in Mokena, IL
The student and I worked on writing linear equations from word problems. We spent a lot of time trying to understand more conceptually how these equations work, so that ideas such as "y-intercept" and "slope" aren't just abstract concepts. The word problems helped the student to understand how to interpret these concepts, and a line on a graph, much better. In particular, we discussed how to interpret the word problem - how to translate each piece of information into a term. We also experimented with different ways of finding the slope. We discussed the idea of "rise over run" with examples such as "every movie Michael sees costs $1," rather than relying only on the slope formula. We discussed the y-intercept as the "starting point" in word problems in examples such as "Michael buys a pass for $40 that allows him to see movies for only $1 each," where $40 is the minimum amount of money he will have spent. Finally, we also touched on the idea that when lines on a graph intersect, their two equations can be set equal to each other. The student seemed to enjoy these more-concrete applications of linear equations. She did struggle with thinking through the applications at first, but this was to be expected as she had not done this type of work before. However, I think the exercise was useful for reinforcing the concepts, and the student agreed that it helped her to understand more fully. I left the student with a couple worksheets to work on over the week, including a packet to guide her through building equations for word problems. She did say that she has testing this week.
