I graduated from Cornell University studying Biology and choosing to specialize in Neurobiology and Behavior. I have an extensive background in math and science. I was pre- med during my four years and I am currently working part time while finishing my final year of medical school. Right after graduating, I participated in City Year, an AMERICORPS education focused non-profit that partners with schools needing the most assistance. I led the 9th Grade academy where my job was to design tailored math and science curricula for 6-8 high risk academic students in 5 different classes. I provided attendance and behavior sessions for another group of students and I served as the Math Coordinator for my team. Since then, I have been working with Varsity tutors and offering academic assistance to other students in my school. Although medical school and tutoring occupy most of my time, I enjoy watching and playing basketball and soccer (futbol). I am a big fan of hip hop and the arts, as well. I have seen that the biggest challenge that prevents students from succeeding is a lack of self confidence. My mother is a part-time business owner, who couldn't operate a computer on her own until this year. When I was young, she simply decided that she was 'bad at technology' and it stuck. Eventually, my sister and I sat her down and gave her instructions on how to access the internet. The next day, we taught her how to use Microsoft word. We made sure that she focused on each skill alone and ignored everything else that seemed confusing. Two weeks later, she got the hang of it. I tutor by presenting the subject matter in a similar way while frequently setting attainable goals so that students will realize how easy it is for them to master subjects on their own. It is the same method I use to learn all of the challenging material I encounter every day. I look forward to meeting you and helping you build the confidence and skills necessary to succeed.

Personal Statement Mathematics is a very challenging discipline. In addition to it being challenging and demanding, it is also intimidating. Anyone who has ever spent hours working on math problems has learned to respect this area of specialty. Academia, however, is seeing an influx of students who enter each course wondering if that particular course will turn out to be the one that will derail their career dreams. Students are fully aware of the difficult task that lies before them and despite their best efforts they are still not successful. As a result, educators have the daunting task of identifying student's abilities, diagnosing and treating fear, in addition to teaching them the new material. A major component of my teaching philosophy deals with the fear component. Let me contest that I do not believe that students are lazy or incompetent but rather they are disgruntled and misinformed; that they somehow strayed away due to constant failures in mathematics. Failure can be constructive as long as it is dealt with quickly and by someone who knows the path to success. The problem is that this usually doesn't happen. Students typically work independently and without guidance. Students typically underestimate the time needed to learn the concepts needed; take too many complex courses while juggling a career and a family; but the greatest cause, in my opinion, is fear and anxiety, fear of not knowing where to begin and fear that their best efforts in the study process will still cause them to fail. As a result, students tend to avoid the issue altogether. As I am nearing my twentieth year as an educator, I am still dealing with this obstacle. There is no simple solution and I certainly will not devalue a student's education. Instead, I have felt that I should simply be honest about the task at hand. We as educators should make it clear that persistence is the key here and that there will be few chances at instant gratification. Mathematics is one of those courses that require a lot of investment in one's time and energy before results are shown. My convictions on mathematics and education in general are that people will always fear what they do not understand. It is the responsibility of the instructor to reduce that fear by presenting the material in such a way that students can understand and ultimately build confidence. All of these things can be done without compromising the goals of the course. Awareness on the part of the student will help immensely in eliminating the fear of mathematics. It is with this charge that I took up a career in education. I wanted a career that would allow me to assist students in becoming exceptional communicators, logical thinkers, and independent learners. I graduated with a BA in math and MS in electrical engineering. From there, I went to Drexel University to write and defend my dissertation in mathematics, which was about two unsolved problems in linear algebra. While in Johns Hopkins and Drexel University, I ended up teaching a lot of math and a bit of science not only as a tutor, but also as a teaching assistant and as a primary instructor. Since then, I've been working as a mathematician; I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Free University of Brussels for one year, and then as a research scientist at the Air Force Research Lab in Dayton, Ohio for two years. It's been a rewarding career, but I have missed teaching. When it comes to teaching, I try my best to take a flexible approach and meet students where they are. I am a big believer in the power of intuition and curiosity, so I try to teach in a way that nurtures both. I find that it is important not only to know how to get from problem statement to solution, but also to have some understanding of why the pieces fit together the way they do. Besides math and teaching, I enjoy singing, playing piano, playing online chess, and doing the New York Times crossword (and other word games).
