I received my PhD in Microbiology from Northwestern University in 2025 and my Bachelor's in Biology from Duke University in 2017. I have a passion for connecting driven students with the resources they need to succeed. I am based in Chicago.

I am a Pre-Med student and working toward a BA in Spanish at the University of Montana. During my college career I have had the pleasure of working as a teaching assistant for an Anatomy and Physiology lab and for a Freshman Honors Seminar. Both of these were extremely rewarding experiences, and as I got to know my students and watched them grow in confidence and competency, I discovered my love of teaching. I have a wide field of interests, but I particularly love to teach the Spanish language. I have studied Spanish for six years, to the extent that it has become part of the way I think and experience the world. It brings me no small amount of joy to be able to speak this language, and I love to help others on their journey to mastering it (which is a long path, I know!). I also particularly love the study of anatomy and physiology, which is an extremely challenging but endlessly fascinating subject. I firmly believe in the pursuit of learning in all forms, be it experiential or classroom-based, and I warmly anticipate working with my students.

There is a profound impact that one can make through the enlightening of a student in the formal education system. As a practitioner for over a decade, and at various levels of the education system, I have come to embrace certain values and guiding principles. Firstly, my client's education experience has to be student-centered. What this has meant for me is that I have had to be more deliberate in my lesson planning, execution and student assessment. I have been careful to ensure that I consulted with the students to ensure that that they played a key role in the learning process. This is especially important in defining roles, responsibilities and rules that bind the partnership. Secondly, it is critical to ensure that the student benefits from a holistic approach towards learning. The meaning of the cura personalis (consist commitment to developing the whole person) is deeply etched in daily approaches and interactions. As a result, I tend to spend quality time on mentorship, coaching and motivating to excellence. Finally, I am a firm believer in the view that every student should be able to solve some societal issue. Hence, I support the students in the pursuit of creativity, innovation and critical thinking. I consistently create the opportunity for them to collaborate so that they can complete a meaningful project.

I am a master's student at Brown University. I graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. While I tutor a wide variety of subjects, I am most passionate about Spanish, math, and English with over 5 years of teaching experience. I also have a Seal of Biliteracy, meaning I am able to teach in both English and Spanish. I hope to work with you soon!

I recently started teaching through Varsity Tutors, and before starting here I have had extensive teaching experience both in and out of the classroom. By utilizing a student-centered learning approach, cultural competence, and equitable teaching, I support students with pedagogy rooted in inquiry, hypothesis, information gathering, problem-solving, and action. I encourage all students to adopt an open-minded approach, and provide support to gifted students, students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and Multilanguage Learners with equity. James Baldwin I am in my second year of grad school, pursuing a dual master's degree in K-8 Elementary Education and K-12 Special Education (Mild to Moderate Disabilities). With my education grad studies and BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), I synthesize creativity and best practices in education to find creative ways of supporting learners. My pursuit and purpose is to guide with compassion and enthusiasm. I encourage students to take ownership of their learning. By promoting student agency, students empower themselves to achieve in academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. As an ADHD adult, I enjoy working with ADHD students and adults experiencing anxiety + depression. What is effortful for our neurodivergent brains is also our superpower! In my career, I have lived and worked in NYC as an editorial photographer, actor, and dancer. I lived in Berlin and pursued performance art + music while honing my communications skills in digital art + copywriting in Marketing. In Los Angeles, I succeeded as a commercial and theatrical actor. My skill set is suited for collaboration with all students to support and develop their passion for learning, exploration, and critical thinking. I live in southeastern Washington State and teach in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington State public school districts. I am a graduate of Yale University. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and two advanced language certificates in Spanish and Italian. A major focus of mine, throughout my undergraduate career and to the present, is to create opportunities to empower and educate people by making them aware of resources available to them and leading efforts to make them more accessible. Through the power of teaching, interpreting, translating and advising I've been able to help individuals make use of every resource available to them and equip them with the tools needed to become a source of instruction and support for others. While I enjoy anything from history to philosophy, my true passion lies in biology, medicine and foreign languages. I find that these subjects compliment each other when coupled together. Through the simplification of language and concepts and the ability to make such content available to more people in their own language it is possible to create a more equitable and welcoming environment in fields that can be intimidating for many people. I aspire to follow a similar philosophy while connecting with students by creating a welcoming atmosphere and attending to their specific needs and goals so that their success and ability to help themselves and be resourceful extends long beyond our tutoring session and in many areas of their life. I find helping others and making their journey a little easier than mine to be very fulfilling and I cannot think of a better way to pave my way to my eventual goal of becoming a cardiologist. There is always something new to learn and finding the right approach is key because we all operate differently but it is possible to overcome obstacles and gain a deeper appreciation for a subject with the right instruction and approach to learning. One of my favorite things to do is to learn from others whether that's a random person at my local coffee shop or a citizen of a different state or country when I have the opportunity to travel. I also like reading (book suggestions are always appreciated), running, lifting, volunteering and I don't mind occasionally losing some sleep to go see my favorite artists play in concerts.

Hi! I am Josie, and I am a first year medical student at Indiana University School of Medicine. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May 2025 where I studied neuroscience and Spanish. I am passionate about tutoring because I love to work with students to help them achieve their goals and prosper. I am lucky that academics have come pretty naturally to me, so I want to share some of the tips and tricks that have helped me with other students. I have five years of experience tutoring middle school students, and I have also taught 1st graders in the past. I usually tutor math ranging from elementary school up to Algebra 2, but have also tutored biology, Spanish, and helped with essay-writing. In my tutoring sessions, I emphasize practice and autonomy to help the students learn material without me doing the work for them. I like to help them understand why a certain process or mechanism works. I can't wait to get to know my students! :)
