I've been teaching and tutoring since 2002, throughout college and grad school and while doing neuroscience research. I love tutoring one-on-one because I can get to know students and gear the lessons toward their interests, which helps them learn more quickly, retain new skills better, and enjoy the tutoring sessions more. I particularly enjoy teaching science, writing, and test prep. With test prep I've found that supplemental work on fundamental skills helps students improve their scores much more than working through a test prep book alone. Watching students develop confidence in their abilities and improve their performance makes my tutoring sessions some of the best hours of my week!

I am currently in my third year of my undergraduate at the University of Washington studying chemistry. One day, I hope to attain my PhD in Chemsitry as well. As a student, I have come to the realization that students don't do well in classes that are strictly lecture based. Students learn in several different ways, and I will adjust myself to those learning styles, whether auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or some combination of the three. I will commit to teaching students that are seeking furthering their minds and intelligence.Generally, I tutor students from grades K-12. The subjects I tutor are as follows: elementary math, middle school math, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, physiology, science, Japanese, piano, and music theory. I really enjoy teaching piano and music theory because it just so happens to be my passion. I learned how to play the piano when I was six and have yet to stop.Apart from academia, I attempt to go outside, but I enjoy the comfort of my own home with books and tea and blankets. But when I do leave the house, I enjoy going rock climbing, walking aimlessly through parks, and trying out new restaurants. If I had a more fuel efficient car, I would spend a good deal of time going on road trips. I have also been in orchestra since freshman year of high school.

I was born in Georgia and spent most of my childhood in Maryland; I'm currently a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. I'm very excited about starting my career in Physical Therapy and potentially spending a gap year abroad doing service or working an internship. Outside the classroom, I love to dance Salsa and play soccer and Spikeball. I'm the oldest of ten children, and I am trilingual (Spanish, Arabic, English). I really enjoy nature, exercise, music, cooking, singing, conversations, and pets/animals.Regarding my tutoring experience, in high school I tutored younger students in biology and Spanish through a Spanish National Honor Society. After my freshmen year in college, I spent a summer abroad in Lebanon and tutored Lebanese students in Math, English, and SAT as they prepared to apply to American universities. During my undergraduate sophomore year, I tutored college-level chemistry and was a Teaching Assistant (TA) for a biology course. The summer after that I gained more experience tutoring middle/high school students in Math/English through community members. My duties often involved teaching novel concepts to students, assisting with homework, and breaking down difficult material into more understandable terms.I have a diverse and strong experience in mathematics, including algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry. I come from a family of engineers and was always taught to understand the root of concepts in order to be able to apply them fluidly when problem-solving.I have studied, enjoyed, and done well in psychology, biology (cell, molecular, genetics), chemistry, physiology, physics, anatomy, and more. As I move forward to make a career out of science, I trust that I have learned the material well and am able to apply and teach it. I have taken several AP courses and exams in these areas as well, and I am able to tutor in those subjects.I rigorously studied the SAT when I was applying for college admissions and read several materials on key skills to have and efficient ways to solve problems, including how to read and write critically. I also have good experience in SAT II tests, including, Biology, Math, and Spanish as well as the PSAT. Finally, I applied to a wide variety of colleges and have a generous amount of knowledge/experience on how to navigate applications, essays, and admissions.

I am a last semester senior at Boston University's Kilachand Honors College and Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation studying a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology. I am on course to matriculate into Boston University School of Medicine to continue my dream of becoming a pediatric physician. I have numerous experiences working with children of all ages through my role as assistant teacher at a local Chinese school, or my clinical experience working at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children.I specialize in test preparation strategies for the ACTs, MCATs and APs, but am equally qualified to tutor in numerous biology related topics in addition to Mandarin Chinese. With my time almost up as an undergraduate, I want to continue doing what I have enjoyed in high school: tutoring and helping students to increase scores and achieve better grades. Knowing that every student studies in different ways, I am flexible and also take the time to get to know your needs or your child's needs to ensure a personalized tutoring experience that will maximize learning and mastery of the subjects of interest. In my experience, helping students and seeing them succeed after their hard work is very rewarding for both myself, the student and the family. Not only do I seek to help students achieve academic and testing success , I also strive to foster students' capability to learn and problem solve independently, skills that will apply to any academic subject and in everyday life.Aside from learning about the human body in class, I enjoy hiking in the near by hills and mountains of New England. I also like fencing as a foil, playing computer games, reading and watching a myriad of show and movies.

I received my Master's degree in Biochemistry from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2012 and my BS in Biology from The College of Idaho in 2010. Prior to this, I graduated from high school in Washington State, where I took a full course-load of IB subjects (including both Higher Level Biology and Chemistry) Obviously, science has been a long term passion of mine! I tutored in C of I's Academic Support Center while enrolled there, and helped many students with biology, math, chemistry, and writing homework and exam prep. More recently, I served a a teaching assistant for a graduate-level molecular genetics course at Einstein. While my master's has pulled me to the "dark side" of science (i.e. chemistry), I have a special fondness for helping others succeed in biology, particularly subjects like genetics and physiology. My tutoring style is to work through problems or subjects with my student and have him or her explain how they arrived at the answer or point out what they think are important concepts. I do not like to provide the answers to my students without them trying the problem first, because this does not help them grow more confident in the subject. Outside of my academic life, I enjoy swimming, which I did competitively through high school and college, and taking fiction writing courses. I take being called a "nerd" as a compliment.

I am a graduate from Duke University with a B.S. in Neuroscience and a minor in Chemistry. As a neuroscience major, my focus was on cognitive neuroscience and, particularly, in using electroencephalography (EEG) to understand how visual distractors interfere with ongoing brain processes associated with cognitive performance. My current work at the Clinical and Translational Neuroscience Branch and Dynamic Imaging Core of the NIMH involves leveraging multiple brain imaging modalities (e.g., functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)) and the power of Genome Wide Association analysis to investigate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that might predict brain activation and connectivity patterns found in schizophrenia patients.I believe a commitment to education and to life-long learning is essential for a successful and meaningful existence. During my journey as a student I have come to love the process of scientific inquiry and how it allows us to understand, predict and shape reality. Tutoring students contributes greatly to my sense of self-fulfillment, as it allows me to share some of my passion for science and, at the same time, help others thrive and achieve their educational and career goals.I have worked as a mathematics tutor for middle school students of public schools located in underserved communities of Durham and as a teaching assistant for calculus-based undergraduate physics courses at Duke University. Additionally, during my time as a medical student in Brazil, I worked as teaching assistant for the cardiac physiology graduate course of University of Brasilia's School of Medicine. These experiences allowed me to work with students of multiple ages, educational levels, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and to develop an appreciation for individual uniqueness when it comes to learning strategies and preferences. As such, I try to respect each student's learning pace, level of comfort/aptitude for a particular subject and learning style when organizing a tutoring session. To me, studying should be not only about achieving academic success but, primarily, about having fun and developing an appreciation for continuous learning.I tutor human physiology, pharmacology, anatomy (neuroanatomy in particular), biology, chemistry (honors chemistry, physical chemistry), physics (classical mechanics, electricity & magnetism), algebra (1-3/4), pre-calculus, calculus I & II, SAT subject test prep (Biology E/M, Chemistry & Physics), MCAT test prep (Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Verbal Reasoning), Spanish and computer science (python programming in particular). Amongst these, I am particularly fond of teaching physics and of helping students prepare for and feel confident about taking the MCAT. In my spare time, I enjoy practicing yoga and meditation, biking, baking vegan desserts, playing my electric guitar, reading fantasy/sci-fi novels and watching a great soccer match.

I recently completed my junior year at the University of Pittsburgh, where I am pursuing degrees in Bioengineering and Economics. I am currently taking some time off from my studies to learn the ins and outs of the biomedical industry by working a Co-op in pharmaceutical engineering. While I have held several tutoring positions, my favorite experience was when I designed an interactive obstacle course demonstrating the functions of the adaptive immune system as part of the Pitt Tissue Engineering Summer Camps Initiative. The obstacle course contained everything from NERF guns to secret handshakes and is emblematic of my tutoring philosophy: I always encourage my students to visualize the course material in creative ways that stretch beyond the classroom. While I tutor numerous subjects, my personal favorites are Economics and Physiology. In my free time you'll find me running, playing soccer, reading (everything from Harry Potter to Khalil Gibran), or shooting hoops on the basketball court. One of my future goals is to ride my bike across the USA from my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio to the Pacific Ocean.
