About Me

I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in May with a major in Neuroscience and minors in Chemistry and Spanish. I've been teaching and tutoring for a year and a half as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in the Chemistry department, working with students one on one and in small groups in General and Organic Chemistry. As a pre-medical student and a Neuroscience major, I've taken extensive coursework in biology, physiology, physics and math, so I am qualified to tutor those subjects as well. In addition to my strong science background, I love reading, writing and learning about culture and language. I took four years of college level Spanish and I'm proficient in reading, writing, speaking and listening in Spanish, with a particular knack for explaining grammar and editing compositions. In my free time I like to ride the bike trails around Pittsburgh, explore the city's wonderful museums and libraries and cook delicious meals with my roommates.

Q&A with Mary

When I teach, I try to have the student guide me through their thinking process, and I try to ask questions to help them make their way to the answer on their own. I try to validate students' thinking, while helping them practice strategies they need to solve problems independently. How would you help a student stay motivated? Provide encouragement and positive feedback, adjust the difficulty of the practice materials to be a good fit for their skill level, and ask students to "teach back" to me by explaining concepts to me as if I were the student.
