I am a University of Texas - Austin graduate with honors, BS in Molecular Biology. I also hold an MS in Biology from University of California - San Diego, specializing in Cell Biology. My tutoring experience is, frankly, pretty massive; I have been a tutor almost continuously since 2000. In some cases I taught the same student for several years. Most of these students were international students taught in various Asian countries, but all instruction was in English and the students were from dozens of different nations, including of course many Americans. I also have considerable classroom teaching experience; I have taught Science, Business and Math courses at several high schools and also worked at numerous private schools of different kinds. Due to my academic background my greatest strength as a tutor is in the area of IB Biology and Chemistry, AP Biology and Chemistry, and university freshman courses in the same subjects. However, I can tutor essentially any Science and Math taught in high school. I consider myself an extremely proficient Math tutor especially with grade 10, Algebra II, Trigonometry and any course below that level. IB Higher Math is a bit of a hard slog for me (as for most students!), but IB Core Math and Math Studies are no problem. For university work, I can help with General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and almost any undergraduate course in Biology or similar subjects, including Microbiology and Botany. My core strength is in Molecular Biology and Cell Biology. In addition, I can help with humanities assignments, including History, Business, Psychology and English. I also worked as a business journalist in Thailand and started a commercial technical editing firm in Shanghai. In addition to all this I do have a great deal of test prep experience, especially SAT. My tutoring experience has taught me that almost every student can benefit from tutoring. For gifted students the right tutor can expose them to advanced ideas and connections that they otherwise would not encounter for years, if ever. One of my most talented former students started studying university-level science material in 8th grade. He was later admitted, with my help, to summer programs at Cornell and Harvard that allowed high school students to work in university laboratories; ultimately he went to Berkeley, then medical school and is now a neurosurgeon. I am proud that I had something to do with his success. For students with serious academic difficulties, a tutor can patiently teach them the basic skills they need to surmount their immediate obstacles, while at the same time laying the groundwork for future achievements that in some cases they or their parents would have thought impossible. In our society, it is unfortunately the case that classroom instruction is often ineffective. In my view, the main reasons are a lax classroom environment that does not promote learning; low expectations; and unfortunately, a relatively low standard of professionalism expected of classroom teachers. Although I have seen both sides of this issue as a classroom teacher myself, and there are definitely some brilliant and dedicated classroom teachers out there, this last problem is a major reason why tutoring can be so helpful. During my tutorials, I have heard countless kids say "I didn't get that at all when Mr X taught it in class, but when YOU explained it it was so simple!" At the same time, tutoring is not magic. In particular, a tutor cannot do much with a student who is fundamentally unmotivated, although I have learned ways to build motivation given adequate time. In general I feel that tutoring really helps students to achieve their potential. In terms of my teaching style, I am very direct, professional and no nonsense. To the limits of my capabilities, I try to provide whatever the client wants and will do whatever works in terms of approach and lesson activities, adjusting my methods according to client needs. As for my interests, I have a lot, including writing, reading, travel (I have been all over Asia and lived in several Asian countries), cooking, photography, racquetball and football (both kinds), among others. My name is Nim. I graduated cum laude and departmental honors with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, and a minor in Writing & Rhetoric. In college, I realized that certain classes can be an obstacle for students as there are not enough of a friendly environment for them to express their concerns. For my tutoring approach, I first let students know that it is okay to make mistakes and that practice can help you improve progressively. I try to allow students express concerns they have regarding to the material presented from class and then we directly approach the lesson by having an understanding of what the student does or does not know. After the lesson, I would review the points that we learned and having a goal of students practicing material on their own. The method can be adjusted based on student's individual needs. I have a year experience in teaching organic chemistry and physical chemistry in college. I worked directly with any students who needed additional assistance, but also focus on one-on-one tutoring. These were the students who needed extra help, so I work with them during class to make sure they didn't fall behind and clarify questions they might have. During high school I found that I really enjoyed chemistry. This pushed me to pursue and obtain multiple degrees in chemistry. I obtained my Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Idaho. While I was an undergraduate I was lucky enough to conduct research on the synthesis of new organic molecules for use in pharmaceutical research. During my Master's degree I conducted research for two years on main group and early transition metal polymerization catalysts. The title of my Master's thesis is "Synthesis and Reactivity of Bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)aluminum Complexes". I then moved to the midwest and spent time in Iowa City and Chicago during my Ph.D. studies. I was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and the title of my dissertation is "Understanding Structure/Reactivity Trends in Palladium(II) Polymerization Catalysts containing Heterocyclic Donor Ligands". The time I spent doing my doctoral research allowed me to pursue the love I have for the synthesis of organic molecules and also explore the reactivity of transition metal complexes that incorporate these molecules. I gained a desire to understand how chemistry works on a fundamental, mechanistic level. It is this focus on the details that allows me to look at chemical reactions and help others to understand how they work. I have been a tutor, teaching assistant for both lectures and laboratories, and a professor during my career as a chemist. I tutored students in general chemistry and organic chemistry as an undergraduate. As both a graduate student and professor I taught both organic chemistry lectures and labs and helped students in one-on-one meetings as well as review sessions. I am a tutor for middle school and high school science. I am able to tutor multiple areas of chemistry including high school and college chemistry and organic chemistry. My favorite subject is chemistry with a particular love for organic chemistry. This has shaped my teaching philosophy as I have grown more mature in my understanding of the chemical sciences. I am patient and search for multiple explanations of the subject material. I am aware that I am an expert in chemistry but if the person I am helping has not gained a better understanding of chemistry after working with me then I have not been successful. I am hands on with regards to leading by example and showing someone how I would solve a problem. I may not be able to impart the same love I have for chemistry in a particular student but if they see how much I enjoy the material I hope I will inspire them to continue to try and master the subject themselves. I am a big believer in having interests and hobbies outside of my work in chemistry. When I was growing up, I lived in many different places in the United States so I love traveling within the US as well as the world. My travels often inspire new thoughts and solutions for problems I might be encountering at work. By getting away for an issue I find that an answer can appear in my thoughts when I am distracted and not focused on the roadblocks that often appear in my work. I am often accused of "thinking about molecules" when I am supposed to be relaxing if I look distracted. Some of my best ideas have come to me when wondering around a plaza in Mexico or Spain. At home, I enjoy watching Manchester United, riding my bike, running, listening to my very eclectic music collection and gardening when the weather cooperates. I believe I am a very inquisitive person and so I am open to learning new things and going to new places for experiences that I have not had before.

I graduated from Dartmouth College with a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in both Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Music. I continued my education at Columbia University and received Master of Arts in Biology. Starting in middle school and continuing through my graduate career, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subjects, but I was most effective at tutoring math and science because of my lifelong love and aptitude for these subjects. Since I am also working towards a career in molecular biology, I use math and science every day, and I can explain real-world applications and uses for these subjects that may not seem obvious. By demonstrating the use of math and science in everyday life, I am able to help interact with the student and increase their interest in a subject in which they may experience difficulty. I have enjoyed tutoring students for over 40 years. I remember my first student was the 7 grade daughter of the college librarian where I work at as an undergraduate at the University of North Alabama. I tutored her in math. I tutored numerous nursing students in chemistry while at graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville where I received my PhD in 1985. Upon retiring, I decided to continue tutoring part time as it still continues to bring me so much joy to help others suceed in their academic pursuits. I grew up in the Boston area and now live in Citrus County, Florida. I graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for many years as a chemical process engineer, so I have a strong background in math and science, especially chemistry and thermodynamics. I've also been granted six U.S. patents. When the pandemic hit us, I moved to Florida and did part-time work as a chess tutor, then became a substitute teacher in the middle and high schools in our district. I enjoyed working with the students, many of whom had difficulty learning in big classes with many disruptions. I found that I could best help these students by using real-world examples to teach difficult concepts in a new way. Often, then, the student would come away with a new perspective and a much better understanding of the concept. I was happy to be able to help. By demonstrating the use of math and science in everyday life, I am able to help interact with the student and increase their interest in a subject in which they may experience difficulty. I also believe that as a tutor, it is my responsibility to engage with the student to help them achieve and even surpass their goals. In my spare time, I am heavily involved with music in New York City, being part of multiple choirs and continuing to play piano. I also enjoy exercising and exploring the city whenever I have the chance.

I have enjoyed tutoring students for over 40 years. I remember my first student was the 7 grade daughter of the college librarian where I work at as an undergraduate at the University of North Alabama. I tutored her in math. I tutored numerous nursing students in chemistry while at graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville where I received my PhD in 1985. I tutored students in science and math during my career as an industrial water treatment chemist. Upon retiring, I decided to continue tutoring part time as it still continues to bring me so much joy to help others suceed in their academic pursuits. I am the chemistry tutor at the tutor center at our local community college.

I grew up in the Boston area and now live in Citrus County, Florida. I graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for many years as a chemical process engineer, so I have a strong background in math and science, especially chemistry and thermodynamics. I've also been granted six U.S. patents. When the pandemic hit us, I moved to Florida and did part-time work as a chess tutor, then became a substitute teacher in the middle and high schools in our district. I enjoyed working with the students, many of whom had difficulty learning in big classes with many disruptions. I found that I could best help these students by using real-world examples to teach difficult concepts in a new way. Often, then, the student would come away with a new perspective and a much better understanding of the concept. I was happy to be able to help. These days as a VT tutor, I continue to use, whenever possible, real-world examples in my own material in chemistry and thermodynamics.
