I am a sophomore at Wesleyan University, double majoring in Chemistry and Film Studies. I am extremely dedicated to helping my students, pushing to help maximize their potential. I am currently a fourth year medical student at Thomas Jefferson medical school. I graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Studio Art. While at Brandeis, I served as a teaching assistant for the introductory organic chemistry course and had the opportunity to closely work with professors to develop teaching plans to lead structured small group learning sessions. I was honored to receive the Emily Dudek Undergraduate Teaching Award for my commitment to my students and their success in the class. Since graduation, I have conducted research in Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and am pursuing a medical degree. I tutored numerous nursing students in chemistry while at graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville where I received my PhD in 1985. I tutored students in science and math during my career as an industrial water treatment chemist. Upon retiring, I decided to continue tutoring part time as it still continues to bring me so much joy to help others suceed in their academic pursuits. I graduated from Dartmouth College with a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in both Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Music. I continued my education at Columbia University and received Master of Arts in Biology. Starting in middle school and continuing through my graduate career, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subjects, but I was most effective at tutoring math and science because of my lifelong love and aptitude for these subjects. Since I am also working towards a career in molecular biology, I use math and science every day, and I can explain real-world applications and uses for these subjects that may not seem obvious. During my Master's degree I conducted research for two years on main group and early transition metal polymerization catalysts. The title of my Master's thesis is "Synthesis and Reactivity of Bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)aluminum Complexes". I then moved to the midwest and spent time in Iowa City and Chicago during my Ph.D. studies. I was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and the title of my dissertation is "Understanding Structure/Reactivity Trends in Palladium(II) Polymerization Catalysts containing Heterocyclic Donor Ligands". The time I spent doing my doctoral research allowed me to pursue the love I have for the synthesis of organic molecules and also explore the reactivity of transition metal complexes that incorporate these molecules. I gained a desire to understand how chemistry works on a fundamental, mechanistic level. It is this focus on the details that allows me to look at chemical reactions and help others to understand how they work. I may not be able to impart the same love I have for chemistry in a particular student but if they see how much I enjoy the material I hope I will inspire them to continue to try and master the subject themselves. I am a big believer in having interests and hobbies outside of my work in chemistry. When I was growing up, I lived in many different places in the United States so I love traveling within the US as well as the world. My travels often inspire new thoughts and solutions for problems I might be encountering at work. By getting away for an issue I find that an answer can appear in my thoughts when I am distracted and not focused on the roadblocks that often appear in my work. I am often accused of "thinking about molecules" when I am supposed to be relaxing if I look distracted. Some of my best ideas have come to me when wondering around a plaza in Mexico or Spain. At home, I enjoy watching Manchester United, riding my bike, running, listening to my very eclectic music collection and gardening when the weather cooperates. I believe I am a very inquisitive person and so I am open to learning new things and going to new places for experiences that I have not had before.

I graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for many years as a chemical process engineer, so I have a strong background in math and science, especially chemistry and thermodynamics. I've also been granted six U.S. patents. When the pandemic hit us, I moved to Florida and did part-time work as a chess tutor, then became a substitute teacher in the middle and high schools in our district. I enjoyed working with the students, many of whom had difficulty learning in big classes with many disruptions. I found that I could best help these students by using real-world examples to teach difficult concepts in a new way. Often, then, the student would come away with a new perspective and a much better understanding of the concept. I was happy to be able to help. In high school, I particularly enjoyed taking classes like AP Chemistry, AP biology, AP psychology, anatomy and physiology, and I received an AP scholar with distinction award as a result. With this focus in primarily STEM classes, I am able to help with a range of science based subjects but specialize in organic chemistry a little more than the others. I have experience instructing at Mathnasium, being able to help with a range of math levels from elementary math to high school level math. Because of my time there, I know how important a good understanding of any material depends on an instructor's ability to convey and I want to be able to help others just as my favorite professors have helped me. In terms of teaching, I like to introduce the subject of interest in a broad way with more conceptualization before focusing on certain problems that are good for comprehension. I think problem solving and understanding one's train of thought is one of the most beneficial ways to succeed in science and math so step by step problem solving is something I like to spend time on. However, my method can easily be adjusted to fit a students individual needs. I also tend to tutor with my Ipad, so it is easy for me to teach in a visual manner.
