Judah

Pre-Algebra Tutor • +14 Subjects

Hello! my name is Judah Renshaw founder and head tutor of "ACT like you mean it" tutoring company. I gradated high school early with honors, distinction a 4.6 GPA and am currently in my 3rd year of undergrad working towards a Bachelors in business. Every year of my schooling I have been asked to tutor or otherwise assist my peers academically. I enjoy tutoring any subject as long as I am informed of the topic beforehand. But I most enjoy helping students prepare for and improve their scores on the ACT exam. My most recent students all improved their scores by 5 (composite) points or more! My primary goal is to help each student successfully obtain (and redefine if currently lackluster) their academic goals. At times students need to rediscover their curiosity. I can help them work past frustration to refocus and/or differentiate other blocks to learning. I do not take the responsibility of helping you or child along your/their educational journey lightly. I am open to input and working with guardians/teachers as well!

Nim

Trigonometry Tutor • +2 Subjects

My name is Nim. I graduated cum laude and departmental honors with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, and a minor in Writing & Rhetoric. In college, I realized that certain classes can be an obstacle for students as there are not enough of a friendly environment for them to express their concerns. For my tutoring approach, I first let students know that it is okay to make mistakes and that practice can help you improve progressively. I try to allow students express concerns they have regarding to the material presented from class and then we directly approach the lesson by having an understanding of what the student does or does not know. After the lesson, I would review the points that we learned and having a goal of students practicing material on their own. The method can be adjusted based on student's individual needs. I have a year experience in teaching organic chemistry and physical chemistry in college. I worked directly with any students who needed additional assistance, but also focus on one-on-one tutoring. These were the students who needed extra help, so I work with them during class to make sure they didn't fall behind and clarify questions they might have. I held review sessions in Organic Chemistry, where I choose questions to review and occasionally teach important points to understand in a topic. I want to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, therefore I welcome any feedback from the students can provide. I am easy to reach and will always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson.

Thomas

AP Calculus BC Tutor • +65 Subjects

I graduated from Dartmouth College with a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in both Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Music. I continued my education at Columbia University and received Master of Arts in Biology. Starting in middle school and continuing through my graduate career, I have tutored students in a wide variety of subjects, but I was most effective at tutoring math and science because of my lifelong love and aptitude for these subjects. Since I am also working towards a career in molecular biology, I use math and science every day, and I can explain real-world applications and uses for these subjects that may not seem obvious. By demonstrating the use of math and science in everyday life, I am able to help interact with the student and increase their interest in a subject in which they may experience difficulty. I also believe that as a tutor, it is my responsibility to engage with the student to help them achieve and even surpass their goals. In my spare time, I am heavily involved with music in New York City, being part of multiple choirs and continuing to play piano. I also enjoy exercising and exploring the city whenever I have the chance.

As a recent graduate from Cornell University with a degree in biological sciences and someone who plans to attend medical school in the future, my passion and appreciation for the sciences and medicine is something I consider integral to my identity. My favorite subjects to tutor are biology and chemistry as those are the subjects in which I have past teaching experience in the classroom setting. In particular, my teaching style focuses on rephrasing and remodeling initially daunting concepts and information into bite-sized and digestible bits of information that any student can comprehend. I firmly believe that a lot of what slows students down in the learning process is their preconceived notions of course material. My passion for helping students stems from my experiences as an undergraduate where I can remember on countless occasions feeling lost in the material with little direction on how to approach the curriculum. I can think back to the many times I would have benefitted from having someone who could have guided me through stretches of daunting coursework which led me to become a tutor myself. As a teaching assistant, I discovered my passion for helping students manage their way through courses that many considered to be very difficult. Seeing how they reacted to my assistance reminded me why I applied for the position in the first place and motivates me to help students learn more every single day.

I grew up in the Boston area and now live in Citrus County, Florida. I graduated from MIT in chemical engineering and worked for many years as a chemical process engineer, so I have a strong background in math and science, especially chemistry and thermodynamics. I've also been granted six U.S. patents. When the pandemic hit us, I moved to Florida and did part-time work as a chess tutor, then became a substitute teacher in the middle and high schools in our district. I enjoyed working with the students, many of whom had difficulty learning in big classes with many disruptions. I found that I could best help these students by using real-world examples to teach difficult concepts in a new way. Often, then, the student would come away with a new perspective and a much better understanding of the concept. I was happy to be able to help. These days as a VT tutor, I continue to use, whenever possible, real-world examples in my own material in chemistry and thermodynamics.

I am a person who genuinely enjoys both writing and chemistry (especially organic). To most people, this seems like an odd combination but for me it's natural. I have been able to leverage both of these skills in order to obtain a PhD in organic chemistry. Also, I have written a couple of articles about chemistry on Medium. Understandably, some students struggle in these areas and I would like to help. When I am working with students, I like to be flexible with my teaching approach. During our first session, the student and I will set goals for our time together and we will discuss your learning style. In the subsequent sessions, student and I will work together to develop a learning environment that will help you Education: - Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame (2014) - B.S. in Biochemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana (2008) Experience: 1. 5 years working as a lecture teaching assistant for general chemistry I and organic chemistry I and II at the University of Notre Dame 2. 1 year experience tutoring a high school student in chemistry (1 hour per week) 3. 6 years experience in helping undergraduate students understand organic chemistry and biology

Frequently Asked Questions

Organic Chemistry is challenging because it requires visualizing molecules in 3D space and understanding reaction mechanisms that aren't immediately intuitive. Many students struggle with memorization overload, trying to learn hundreds of reactions without grasping the underlying principles of how and why they occur.

Personalized tutoring addresses this by helping you move beyond rote memorization to understand the core concepts—like electron behavior, molecular interactions, and reaction patterns. Once you see the logic behind reactions, the material becomes far more manageable and retention improves dramatically.

Organic Chemistry is fundamentally about spatial reasoning—understanding how atoms are positioned in 3D and how they move during reactions. Expert tutors use multiple visualization strategies, including drawing mechanisms step-by-step on whiteboards, using molecular models, and working through resonance structures until the concepts click.

Rather than passively reading structures in a textbook, you'll actively construct and manipulate them with guidance, which builds the mental visualization skills that are essential for success on exams and in the lab.

Memorizing reactions is a dead end—there are far too many to memorize, and exams test your ability to predict new reactions you haven't seen before. Understanding mechanisms means learning why a reaction happens: how nucleophiles attack, how carbocations form and rearrange, and how different functional groups behave.

Tutors focus on teaching you to think like an organic chemist, recognizing patterns and predicting outcomes based on fundamental principles. This approach not only works better for exams but also prepares you for advanced chemistry, biochemistry, and laboratory work where applying concepts matters far more than recall.

Organic Chemistry underpins pharmaceuticals, materials science, polymers, food chemistry, and countless other fields. Making these connections helps motivation and retention—it's much easier to remember a concept when you understand why it matters.

Great tutors weave real-world context into lessons, explaining how reaction mechanisms apply to drug design, how stereochemistry affects drug efficacy, or how polymers are synthesized. These connections transform abstract concepts into tangible knowledge and help you see why you're learning this material.

The best Organic Chemistry tutors have strong chemistry backgrounds and, ideally, lab experience. More importantly, they can explain complex mechanisms clearly, ask probing questions to identify gaps in your understanding, and teach you how to approach problems systematically rather than memorize solutions.

You want someone who emphasizes conceptual understanding over memorization, uses multiple explanation methods (drawing, models, analogies), and can adjust their teaching style to match how you learn. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in meeting students where they are and building genuine mastery.

Organic Chemistry exams test conceptual reasoning and problem-solving, not just recall. Personalized tutoring focuses on your specific weak points—whether that's stereochemistry, synthesis planning, or reaction prediction—rather than generic review.

Tutors work with you on practice problems similar to exam questions, teach you strategies for tackling unfamiliar reactions, and help you develop the systematic approach that leads to consistent answers. This targeted preparation typically leads to significant score improvements and genuine confidence going into exams.

Yes. The lecture component focuses on theory and mechanisms, while the lab component tests your ability to apply those concepts in practice—carrying out reactions, analyzing results, and troubleshooting when things don't go as planned. Both require understanding, not just following procedures.

Expert tutors help strengthen your conceptual foundation so lab work makes sense, teach you how to think through experimental design and error analysis, and help you see connections between the reactions you study in lecture and what you observe in the lab. This integrated approach leads to stronger performance across both components.
