How Supplemental Tutoring Works
When you need more time with your tutor, Supplemental Tutoring kicks in and automatically handles the billing of those additional hours. There are no hidden fees or penalties. We simply charge you the additional time—using your membership plan hourly rate—at the beginning of your next monthly billing period.
The Supplemental Tutoring fee is conveniently combined with your next monthly membership fee in a single credit card transaction. We will also email you when Supplemental Tutoring fees have been charged. You can check your hours balance and tutoring activity at any time on the Current Month Activity page in Your Account on varsitytutors.com and in your mobile Varsity Tutors app.

What is Supplemental Tutoring and how does it work?
Supplemental Tutoring allows you to receive as much 1-on-1 tutoring support as you need without having to purchase more membership hours in advance. Schedule more time with your tutor, get extra homework help with Instant Tutoring, add a new tutoring subject, or add tutoring for more students in your family. Whatever the reason for needing Supplemental Tutoring, you will be charged for the additional hours at the same membership plan hourly rate in your next monthly payment.
If I want to take advantage of Supplemental Tutoring in a specific month, do I need to notify Varsity Tutors in advance?
No advanced notice is necessary. Supplemental Tutoring will be billed automatically based on the additional hours used at the end of each monthly membership billing period.
How are Supplemental Tutoring fees calculated?
Supplemental Tutoring fees are based on the total 1-on-1 tutoring time in excess of your monthly membership hours, multiplied by the hourly tutoring rate in your current Learning Membership plan.
For example, if you purchase a Learning Membership plan that includes 4 hours of 1-on-1 tutoring per month for 12 months, and the monthly membership fee is $269.00, the hourly tutoring rate is $269 divided by 4 hours, which equals $67.25. If you use 5.5 total tutoring hours in the billing period, the Supplemental Tutoring fee will be based on the incremental 1.5 hours of tutoring multiplied by $67.25. In this scenario, the Supplemental Tutoring fee will be $100.88 and will be combined with your next monthly membership payment. The total amount of your next payment will be $269 + $100.88, which equals $369.88.
When am I charged Supplemental Tutoring fees?
Supplemental Tutoring fees are calculated at the end of your current billing period and charged at the beginning of your next monthly billing period. The Supplemental Tutoring fee is combined with the monthly membership fee in a single credit card transaction. This means that you may see higher monthly charges on your credit card bill in months when Supplemental Tutoring fees have been applied.
How will I know when Supplemental Tutoring fees have been charged?
You can check your hours balance at any time on the Current Month Activity page, as well as confirm that Supplemental Tutoring credits reset your hours balance on the Hours Balance & Usage page in Your Account. You will also receive an email notification when Supplemental Tutoring fees have been charged.
How can I view my hours balance and activity throughout the month?
You can check your current hours balance and activity in Current Month Activity and Hours Balance & Usage. You can also confirm your current hours balance under the Tutoring Hours & Courses section of Account Settings.
What do I do if I think I was charged incorrectly for Supplemental Tutoring?
To verify how your tutoring activity resulted in a Supplemental Tutoring fee, please review your Hours Balance & Usage. If it is still unclear, or you think one or more tutoring sessions were invoiced by your tutor in error, we would be happy to assist you. Please give us a call at 888-888-5181.
