Building Blocks of 8th Grade Math

Grade 8

The school year moves quickly, with so many skills to cover and even more opportunities for learning gaps to emerge. But math is a building block subject: certain skills form the foundation necessary to master concepts in the future, so students can’t afford to miss, misunderstand, or forget them.

That’s why Building Blocks of 8th Grade Math meets weekly to give learners the instruction and repetition they need to master building block skills permanently. Each week, an expert instructor will lead students through engaging demonstrations and exercises designed to fill in learning gaps and solidify understanding of the 8th grade math skills–such as functions, transformations, and scatter plots–most essential for success the rest of the school year and beyond.

You Will Learn

  • August/September: Explore integer exponents, square roots, cube roots, scientific notation, and estimation techniques for large and small quantities in mathematics.

  • September/October: Gain indepth experience using proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations, focusing on graphing, interpreting slopes, deriving equations, and solving problems with rational number coefficients.

  • October/November: Analyze and find the solutions for pairs of simultaneous linear equations, as well as the understanding and comparison of functions represented algebraically, graphically, numerically, or verbally.

  • November/December: Explore the relationships between quantities through functions and applies the Pythagorean Theorem to solve real-world problems in geometry and coordinate systems.

  • December/January: Study properties of rotations, reflections, and translations, as well as the concepts of congruence, similarity, and angle relationships in two-dimensional figures, while also delving into the formulas for volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres and their application in real-world problem-solving.

  • January/February: Understand that the decimal expansion of rational numbers repeats and convert repeating decimals to rational numbers. Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare sizes, locate them on a number line, and estimate expressions.

  • February/March: Explore statistics by creating and analyzing scatter plots for paired measurement data. Investigate patterns of association between two quantities, including clustering, outliers, and various types of relationships.

  • March/April: Study functions by creating linear relationships between two quantities, identifying rate of change and initial value, and interpreting these aspects in context. Recognize characteristics like increase or decrease, linearity, or nonlinearity, and sketch graphs from verbal descriptions.

  • April/May: Review volume calculations for cones, cylinders, and geometric shapes. Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse to find unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

  • May/June: Learn to model relationships between quantitative variables using straight lines, fit scatter plots with linear association, assess model fit, solve problems with linear models using measurement data, and interpret slope and intercept.

  • June/July: Explore rotations, reflections, and translations, verifying properties like lines mapping to lines and angles matching in measure. Understand congruence and similarity of two-dimensional figures through sequences of transformations.

  • July/August: Finish off the summer by reviewing the most difficult concepts in Eighth Grade math!
