I am a Microbiologist at Washington University that studies the parasite that causes malaria. I have been mentoring, teaching and tutoring students at all levels from my time as an undergraduate at Brown University, through my graduate studies at MIT to my current research position now at Washington University. In college I tutored Biology, Chemistry and Organic Chemistry to fellow undergraduates. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses in Immunology and Genetics. The combination of my research experience along with my teaching experience means that I use the things I learned in Math, Chemistry and Biology on a daily basis. My approach to tutoring and teaching is to focus on the concepts that are crucial for the students to understand the material. By concentrating on the important concepts as opposed to memorization, I have found that students in the long run perform much better on their exams. My primary areas of experience are Chemistry through the college level and Biology at just about any level.

Hi! My name is Akio and I am a recent Purdue University graduate in Computer Engineering. As a teaching assistant for multiple courses including C Programming, Freshman Engineering, Digital Systems Design, and iOS programming, I had the opportunity to meet many great students and assist them in completing their courses successfully and meaningfully. I hope to continue doing that here with Varsity Tutors. I am also strong in high school-level STEM classes, such as chemistry, physics, biology, and math.

I've been tutoring since I was in high school. I started by tutoring French and teaching flute to younger students. I realized how much fun it is to teach and continued tutoring when I was in college. I tutored my fellow students in Mandarin Chinese, French, and Chemistry. After I graduated, I went to China and taught English both at a school and privately for three years. Right now I am teaching English as a Second Language at a language school here in San Diego. I like private tutoring a lot more than teaching large classes because it's much more personalized, and I can help the student learn exactly what they need. It's great to see someone make progress and become confident with something that he or she was previously struggling with. I am interested in tutoring anything related to English, especially grammar and vocabulary, SAT, ISEE, French, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, History and Social Studies, Algebra, Music Theory, and Flute. I am excited to meet my new students!

I love to tutor and help students learn. I have always enjoyed teaching, but tutoring is a lot of fun for me because I am able to get to know the student and learn how they learn. This way I am able to teach in a way the student will learn best!

I am a rising senior at Washington and Lee University, majoring in Biochemistry on the pre-med track. I have always found my science courses to be the most challenging and rewarding courses that I've taken. The main reason why I have loved these courses has been because of the terrific teachers and professors that I have been fortunate enough to have. In high school, I tutored my peers at the Math and Science Center, and I always tried to personally connect with each student in a different way. In the STEM courses, the concepts can be very challenging and complex. My teaching philosophy is to simplify these concepts by relating them to every-day experiences. I've found that when students can understand these concepts through real life examples and applications, they become much easier to understand. Science can be hard, there are a lot of details that can make students (and myself!) feel overwhelmed. However, there are fundamental principles that are at the core of each field in STEM. My mission is to instill these fundamental principles in my students, so that when they move on in their academic and professional careers, they can use these principles to help them understand any concept.

I come from a family of four children. I am the second born and so I always had to help my junior sisters with their homework problems. I enjoyed it a lot and decided to become a tutor once I got to college. One big advantage of tutoring is that it help you help others, put a smile on their faces and make them happy. I have being a tutor for a total of four years already and have enjoyed all the gifts I have gotten from it.I went to Lone Star College Cy-Fair and then transferred to Baylor University where I earned my Bachelors degree with a major in Biochemistry and a minor in mathematics. Throughout my time in college, I was a tutor in both schools and enjoyed it a lot. During tutoring, not only am I teaching a student a concept but I am also learning that concept. That is also one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

Hello Students!I earned my Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I did 3 years of neuroscience research at my university, studying the molecular physiology of epilepsy, autism-spectrum disorders, and Alzheimer's Disease. I also served as a General Chemistry TA, where I led discussion sections of 20-30 students each semester. I am proud to have been featured on UIUC's published list of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students for three semesters! While I tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. I am also skilled in preparing students for college entrance exams (ACT and SAT) and Advanced Placement (AP) exams.I'd like to say that I have never struggled in school, but that is simply not the case. I know very well the struggle and frustration with receiving bad marks no matter how much effort I put in. I felt myself the anxiety surrounding standardized testing, especially before and during the ACT, SAT, and 10 AP exams I took as a high school student. It was through these less-than-pleasant experiences, though, that I sought out mentors and adopted strategies over the years that have not only led me to success on standardized tests, but sustainable academic success. My teaching philosophy centers much upon identifying learning styles, accountability, resilience, and growth, as I have found these themes to be paramount to my own academic success. As a teacher/mentor I hope to encourage and empower my students with personalized strategies that will last, rather than try to direct them to arbitrary scores.
