I am going to school at Hofstra for my Master's degree in Forensic Linguistics. I've been tutoring just about everything except music theory over the last six years, and I find it really fulfilling.
Call me a nerd, but I love learning. I spend a solid amount of time reading articles about Physics, Linguistics, Math, and international events. Being able to relate study material to the real world is imperative! I'm well equipped to answer the question "When will I ever need this?" in a satisfying way. I don't expect you to geek out to the degree that I do, but enthusiasm is contagious and it's my job to make sure that you enjoy learning!
I was one of those kids who never had to try or study and still got As all through high school. I was in for a big surprise in college. The circumstances that allowed me to succeed through high school changed when I went to college. When you don't have class seven hours every day, you don't have good friends to help explain things, and you never had to study outside of class it's really easy to get overwhelmed quickly. I found out that regardless of how quickly you pick up on things, there are good study habits and bad study habits. Good habits can make even the most challenging tests cower in fear from your knowledgeable prowess, but bad habits can set you up for perpetual under performance and unnecessary stress. I'm not just tutoring to help you learn a concept, I'm also teaching you the skills so you can ultimately teach yourself effectively.
Some people thrive in large classes, but most don't. It's ideal to work one-on-one so you don't get bored with the easy concepts and the challenging concepts are set up so you're eager to solve the problem instead of drop-kicking your book in frustration. Learning shouldn't be frustrating, and I'm here to help work through the material in a way to makes sense TO YOU, not to a class of 30 students collectively trying to stay awake.
