The student and I worked on reading comprehension and math today. I have been encouraging her to mark up the passages as she reads them in order to improve accuracy. She is taking my advice but finds that it slows her down somewhat. She continues to make simple mistakes on math. We will work on it.

First session. We reviewed the practice test he had completed over the weekend. Overall he did well with the content and time management. We found grammar, mechanics and synonyms to be his weaker areas. We discussed the problems and he was able to discuss his strategy for choosing a certain answer. He is very bright and seems to picks up the material quickly. We will also work on building vocabulary and reviewing spelling/ capitalization rules. Discussed strategies for each section and the overall exam. H.W.- Review first 20 vocabulary words, make sentence or create funny saying to remember the definition.

We spent most of the time going over parts of the practice test the student had done over the weekend. We went over synonyms and a math section, and worked on a few math concepts. Finally I introduced the rest of the English usage section on the exam to him and we did some practice problems.

I gave the student a diagnostic test for Math, Vocabulary, and Ability. He seems to be able to do the math, but he has a lot of trouble pacing himself during it. I am going to bring flashcards on Monday to do time drills. He did very well in the ability section. Vocabulary he did about average (13/20), so i am going to try to do some vocabulary concepts with him (word roots, commonly asked words, etc.). On Monday we will do a diagnostic for reading and language and go over the math section.

I began the session with the student by administering a diagnostic practice exam to identify areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Afterwards, we reviewed the errors that were made and discussed test taking strategies. Lastly, she was given several vocabulary words to read, define, and use in a sentence.
