How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

If you've been searching for "SSAT tutors near me," you can stop the searching, because Varsity Tutors can connect you with a knowledgeable SSAT tutor to help with your test prep. Signing up for SSAT tutoring is one way to help your student prepare effectively and use their study time efficiently.

SSAT is the initialism for Secondary School Admission Test. This exam measures a student's skills in reading and math, as well as their verbal skills, to determine how well they might fit in at an independent school. There are SSAT exams for students in three different levels: the elementary level (grades 3 and 4); the middle level (grades 5-7) and the upper level (grades 8-11). No matter the grade your student is in, engaging in SSAT tutoring can help them to explore concepts they don't fully understand, learn test-taking and time management skills, and to develop stronger study skills. Getting into any school can be stressful, but spending time with an SSAT tutor and focusing can help to lessen that stress.

Today I had the student do a vocabulary matching activity since she has been having trouble learning her vocabulary words. We also did practice tests for synonyms, analogies, and reading. I then helped her work through a practice math test.

Completed two sections of the quantitative portion of the exam. The student did well on the 50 questions overall. I encouraged him to take his time and show as much work as possible. I told him all standardized tests have a wide array of difficulty in terms of the questions asked and to focus on getting the easy ones right. We also reviewed vocabulary words and I told him to construct precise sentences to convey the exact meaning between the words for each of the analogies.

Since we're less than 2 months away from the student's test, I'm going to start making him take a lot of practice exams. Today we covered reading comprehension, math II, and the essay portion. He got 100% on the math section, but struggled a little bit with time on the reading comp part. We will focus more on the English side of things. Next week, we'll review the questions he missed, and finish the verbal and math I sections.

In this last session, the student worked on her last practice test. She worked through the math section, and we reviewed the problems that she missed. She then worked through the reading and verbal sections, and I checked through them. Lastly, we finished the session by reviewing general information about the test and test-taking strategies.

The student got his SSAT/ISEE study guide and we went through the math diagnostic test. The student was solid on almost all of these problems, but again he had some calculation errors when he was working with a word problem. I encouraged the student to split up these longer word problems into parts, and solve them in parts, and then, when he'd finally accumulated the necessary info, answer the question. We then went over some of the analogies section. The student is very strong in this section. As homework I assigned him about twelve words to learn for next session--he has the skills for the verbal section.
