I believe every student is capable of performing at a level they can be happy about. The important step between where they are and where they want to be is figuring out the best way for them to understand the material on an intrinsic level rather than a cursory one.

Hello, I am really excited to become a tutor at Varsity Tutors. Currently, I am retired from a career in accounting. I have a master degree in accounting from University of Texas (Arlington), a master degree in education from Harvard University and a Bachelor degree in Psychology from National Taiwan University. I was born and raised in Taiwan but have lived in the U.S. for almost 34 years.I have worked professionally for 26 years. I started at an entry level job and held a senior management position when I retired. I have experiences in full ranges of accounting functions and business operation. Among all those experiences I appreciate the most is the opportunities to coach and mentor my staff. This led me to pursue a teaching position at a community college where I taught financial accounting for a semester. Even though I was working full-time at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very fulfilling.I also have taught at Chinese school when my children were young. Teaching my American born children Chinese also provided me with special understandings on learning Chinese as a foreigner. (Yes, I consider my children foreigners.) I believe language and culture are inseparable. While I am teaching Chinese language, I will also introduce Chinese people and culture to enhance the learning experience.I believe the best learning approach should be based on individual and customized to his/her needs. In addition to the accounting degree, I believe my education background in Psychology and Education have further prepared me to achieve this goal. So let's get started and work together to achieve your goals.

I graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor's degree in Finance and a minor in Economics. I am currently in my last semester at Johns Hopkins University, obtaining a Master's degree in Applied Economics. In undergrad, I usually tutored classmates in finance, accounting, and economics. Since I felt very comfortable with the course material and I enjoyed teaching, it was only natural to tutor students that needed help. Since undergrad, I have been tutoring on-and-off for the past five years. I have mostly tutored subjects involving math, but I've tutored English before as well.My teaching philosophy is to make learning interactive and collaborative. I believe that as students build their knowledge and understand the more basic concepts, they start to build confidence in order to tackle the harder concepts. Learning also takes patience, so I usually tell my students to take their time (I usually have to remind myself this when I am learning something new).Outside of tutoring, I work full-time. I do debt funding for a finance company. When I am not working, I am usually listening to music or trying to find a live music in DC. I also try to stay active, this usually involved jogging or some sort of sport. I enjoy traveling and finding new and exciting places in DC.I look forward to hearing from you!

A little bit about me: I grew up in Connecticut and attended prep schools there before going to College at Harvard where I earned a BA in Political Science. After working for a few years in management consulting, campaigning, and policy work, I went to the Yale School of Management where I earned my MBA. After business school, I worked in finance in NYC at a "bulge-bracket" firm before leaving to pursue entrepreneurial interests in the New York tech scene.Tutoring Background: In college, every weekend, I worked with high school students who were attending the top schools in the Boston area. The program focused on extra-academic enrichment primarily in the humanities and social sciences and was affiliated with Harvard's Department of African and African-American Studies. Upon graduation, I volunteered working with students in Watts (Los Angeles) to help them prepare college applications and personal essays. During this time, I also mentored students on preparing for interviews with top management consulting firms. Finally, during my time at Yale, I served as 2nd-year teaching assistant for the Competitive Strategy and State & Society core classes. In this capacity, I helped 1st-year students (whose ages ranged from 24 - 40+) understand the material, graded assignments and exams, and provided reviews for students. I also served as one of the coaches on the 1st-year debate team.Subject I tutor: I tutor Economics (micro and macro), Finance, GMAT and SAT prep, Writing and Public Speaking. I am most passionate about microeconomics and have taken many classes in the subject area in college and business school. I think it provides a very logical and analytical framework of understanding many of things we observe in every day life and thus is incredibly helpful and engaging.Tutoring Philosophy: Everyone is different. My goal is to understand what your specific needs are and to tailor my style in a way that will produce the maximum level of success for you. Commitment and hard work have no substitutes, but the plan of attack should be specific to the student.Interests and hobbies: Technology, basketball, soccer, podcasting, film and television and finding the best cup of coffee in New York, Grantland.
