Six months ago I was reciting off the lyrics to the song "Thrift Shop" in front of a class of seven adult Muscovites struggling to learn English. I have been an independent tutor for several years now. I recently graduated at the top of my class from a high school in Fort Collins, Colorado, and spent the spring semester of 2015 studying abroad at a Spanish university. In the fall of 2016 I will be continuing on to a four year year Canadian university to study mathematics. Mathematics is my specialty and my passion but I enjoy conversing in Spanish and French immensely and have a deep appreciation for the intricate beauty of linguistics. Other less academic passions of mine include backpacking, rock climbing, music and general adventure and travel.I am devoted to designing quality lesson plans and using top notch resources. I love teaching and have been developing my skills in various environments throughout my educational career. One of the most important characteristics of my teaching style is my focus on clear communication. Communication is key in making clear what is understood, what is not, and what is confusing for any student, which I find to be particularly important in the case of students who do not enjoy math, who can often come up against mental blocks. Some other important aspects of my teaching style are my teacher engagement in the subject matter, connecting knowledge to the real world and exploring content from my student’s perspective. In mathematics, my background is primarily experiential and traditionally academic. In regard to languages I have had the fortune to learn them at least partially through immersion. My Spanish has been learned through my eighth grade year which I spent studying in Mexico at a local school and then grammar studying in an upper level college course and finally a semester in Spain. My French was learned primarily in school but I recently spent a month in Morocco where I was able to apply it in a more practical environment.

I am a graduate of Wright State University. I received my Bachelor of Integrated Language Arts and my Master of Education. Throughout much of my program, I have had many opportunities to tutor students from a variety of different backgrounds. The vast bulk of my experience tutoring has been with middle and high school students in "at-risk" school districts and students who speak English as a second language in Dayton, Ohio. Ever since my days in the public school system, English class was the one place where I felt free to be myself and fully embrace what I was being taught. My wonderful instructors showed me that writing especially was a gateway to self-expression, and whenever I tutor students for writing, I try to teach the subject with all the opportunities in the world for the student to write about themselves and give them a platform to express what really matters to them. It's that chance to inject themselves into their studies that allows a student to form deeper connections with the subject. In my spare time, I'm an avid reader, a long-time player of table-top Role Playing Games, and a bicyclist.

I have loved math all my life and I took lots of it in school as I obtained my BS in Electrical Engineering Technology. I even attended math contests. Now I have the opportunity to help others with their math. I have been tutoring for more than nine years and I really enjoy it. I work with students in middle school, high school and college level math. My daytime job, for six plus years, was tutoring college students in math and electronics. I don't just give out the answers but I help the student with the methods to find the answers. I can help with algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, AP calculus, math I, II and III. I am also very good with computers and Microsoft Excel.

I received my Bachelors Degree in 2012 from Thomas Aquinas College, double majoring in philosophy and theology, with a minor in math. I then went on to receive my Master's of Science in Business Analysis in 2013 from Catholic University of America. Since graduation, I have worked for environmental non-profits, helping plant trees across the world, and for consulting firms, helping to mitigate risk in user processes and IT risk analysis. While I tutor in a broad range of subjects, my personal favorites are history, literature, algebra, and philosophy. My approach is focused on two things: perspective and passion. I genuinely believe that learning is one of the greatest gifts society can give us today, and one of the best things we can pursue for ourselves. All knowledge is connected, and rather than approaching a subject as simply that subject by itself, everything we learn opens new doors for our minds, and into subjects we sometimes never knew about or never believed to be as intertwined. For example: is it simply coincidence that the studies of astronomy and philosophy tend to happen at the same time for early cultures? Or that early arithmetical and geometrical proofs were found to exist in natural formations? I find that once connections and insights like the previous occur with the learner, passion begins to grow, and education no longer becomes a requirement, but a self-employed pursuit. In my spare time, I love expanding my knowledge of different artists in many different genres, always looking for my new favorite. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, recreational reading, playing board games and video games, and watching NFL games with my dad.

I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at the University of Southern California and will continue onto medical school in the fall of 2015 at USC. I have also completed a portion of my studies at the University of Oxford in the UK. I have been tutoring for the last five years and specialize in a variety of subjects at the middle school, high school, and college level - from Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics to Psychology, English, and French. I enjoy helping students develop their study habits, time management skills, reading, writing, and critical thinking abilities at many levels. I truly believe that all students have the potential to excel academically, and it's my pleasure to help them discover the key to unlocking their success. My tutoring style varies depending on the subject and student, but my core philosophy is that tutoring has the greatest long-term effect when students develop a passion for learning and acquire the critical thinking abilities and study habits to last throughout a lifetime. In addition to academia, I spend time teaching health workshops in under-served areas of Los Angeles. I also enjoy running, yoga, and spending time outdoors.

Welcome! I look forward to improving your skills. I am a Elementary Education/Special Education Teacher with experience from K-12. I have used all kinds of tools to improve reading skills, phonics to sound out words that re unknown, reading comprehension to be able to answer questions about what they read such as details or drawing conclusions, writing and basic math. My students enjoy the instruction because of the success that they are able to achieve. I keep in close communication with parents so that can see what their child is achieving and allow me to address any of their concerns. Students work with me and also have independent practice opportunities. When the student succeeds, I feel so proud.

Frequently Asked Questions
Graduate economics combines rigorous mathematical modeling with complex economic theory, and many students struggle with the transition from undergraduate coursework. The main challenges include mastering advanced econometrics and statistical methods, understanding how to apply microeconomic and macroeconomic theory to real-world problems, and managing the heavy mathematical workload—particularly calculus, linear algebra, and optimization techniques. Additionally, students often find it difficult to synthesize knowledge across different fields of economics (labor, international, public finance, etc.) and apply it coherently in their research or thesis work. Personalized tutoring can help you identify your specific weak points and build confidence in these complex areas.
In a classroom setting, professors must move at a pace that accommodates the entire cohort, which means struggling students often get left behind while advanced students plateau. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows a tutor to work at your exact learning pace, focus deeply on the concepts giving you the most trouble, and explain material using examples and approaches tailored to how you think. A tutor can also help you connect abstract economic theory to concrete applications relevant to your research interests, dissertation, or career goals—something a large lecture simply can't do. This targeted approach typically leads to faster mastery and higher exam performance.
An excellent graduate economics tutor should have deep expertise in the specific areas you're studying—whether that's econometrics, macroeconomic theory, microeconomic foundations, or a specialized field like labor or environmental economics. Beyond subject knowledge, they should be able to explain complex mathematical concepts clearly and patiently, help you develop problem-solving strategies for challenging proofs and derivations, and understand the specific requirements of your program and coursework. Look for someone with experience working with graduate-level students and ideally someone who has successfully navigated graduate economics themselves and can share realistic strategies for exam preparation and research.
Absolutely. Graduate comprehensive or qualifying exams in economics demand both breadth and depth of knowledge across multiple fields, plus the ability to solve complex problems under time pressure. A tutor can help you create a structured review plan, identify gaps in your understanding across different topics, practice problem-solving strategies, and build confidence in explaining economic concepts clearly. Many students work with tutors specifically during the weeks leading up to these high-stakes exams to sharpen their skills in areas like mathematical optimization, econometric methods, and policy analysis. This focused preparation often results in measurably higher exam performance.
Graduate economics research requires you to apply economic theory, statistical methods, and econometric techniques to original questions—and this is where many students hit a wall. A tutor can help you strengthen your understanding of the theoretical foundations relevant to your research question, troubleshoot econometric models and data analysis, interpret and present results clearly, and connect your findings back to existing literature. Whether you're working through your literature review, designing your empirical strategy, or refining your arguments, personalized instruction can accelerate your progress and help you produce higher-quality work. Many graduate students find that tutoring during the research phase significantly improves both the rigor and clarity of their final thesis.
The timeline depends on your starting point and goals, but most students see meaningful improvement within 3-6 weeks of regular tutoring. You might expect clearer understanding of difficult concepts, improved exam grades, stronger problem-solving skills, and greater confidence in class discussions and your own research. Some students work with tutors for a full semester to build foundational skills in econometrics or mathematics; others connect with a tutor for targeted help on specific problem sets or exams. The key is consistent, focused work—even 1-2 sessions per week can produce measurable results when the tutoring targets your specific needs.
Yes—graduate economics is fundamentally mathematical, and you'll need solid calculus, linear algebra, and increasingly, some optimization and probability theory. However, "strong" doesn't mean you need to be a math prodigy. Many successful graduate economics students initially felt shaky on the math but built their skills through focused study and practice. If math isn't your strongest area, tutoring can help you shore up specific gaps (like partial derivatives, matrix operations, or Lagrangian optimization) and develop the problem-solving confidence you need to tackle econometrics and microeconomic theory. The investment in mathematical foundation early on pays huge dividends throughout your program.
