I am a graduate of Wright State University. I received my Bachelor of Integrated Language Arts and my Master of Education. Throughout much of my program, I have had many opportunities to tutor students from a variety of different backgrounds. The vast bulk of my experience tutoring has been with middle and high school students in "at-risk" school districts and students who speak English as a second language in Dayton, Ohio. Ever since my days in the public school system, English class was the one place where I felt free to be myself and fully embrace what I was being taught. My wonderful instructors showed me that writing especially was a gateway to self-expression, and whenever I tutor students for writing, I try to teach the subject with all the opportunities in the world for the student to write about themselves and give them a platform to express what really matters to them. It's that chance to inject themselves into their studies that allows a student to form deeper connections with the subject. In my spare time, I'm an avid reader, a long-time player of table-top Role Playing Games, and a bicyclist.

I have loved math all my life and I took lots of it in school as I obtained my BS in Electrical Engineering Technology. I even attended math contests. Now I have the opportunity to help others with their math. I have been tutoring for more than nine years and I really enjoy it. I work with students in middle school, high school and college level math. My daytime job, for six plus years, was tutoring college students in math and electronics. I don't just give out the answers but I help the student with the methods to find the answers. I can help with algebra I and II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, AP calculus, math I, II and III. I am also very good with computers and Microsoft Excel.

I received my Bachelors Degree in 2012 from Thomas Aquinas College, double majoring in philosophy and theology, with a minor in math. I then went on to receive my Master's of Science in Business Analysis in 2013 from Catholic University of America. Since graduation, I have worked for environmental non-profits, helping plant trees across the world, and for consulting firms, helping to mitigate risk in user processes and IT risk analysis. While I tutor in a broad range of subjects, my personal favorites are history, literature, algebra, and philosophy. My approach is focused on two things: perspective and passion. I genuinely believe that learning is one of the greatest gifts society can give us today, and one of the best things we can pursue for ourselves. All knowledge is connected, and rather than approaching a subject as simply that subject by itself, everything we learn opens new doors for our minds, and into subjects we sometimes never knew about or never believed to be as intertwined. For example: is it simply coincidence that the studies of astronomy and philosophy tend to happen at the same time for early cultures? Or that early arithmetical and geometrical proofs were found to exist in natural formations? I find that once connections and insights like the previous occur with the learner, passion begins to grow, and education no longer becomes a requirement, but a self-employed pursuit. In my spare time, I love expanding my knowledge of different artists in many different genres, always looking for my new favorite. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, recreational reading, playing board games and video games, and watching NFL games with my dad.

I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at the University of Southern California and will continue onto medical school in the fall of 2015 at USC. I have also completed a portion of my studies at the University of Oxford in the UK. I have been tutoring for the last five years and specialize in a variety of subjects at the middle school, high school, and college level - from Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics to Psychology, English, and French. I enjoy helping students develop their study habits, time management skills, reading, writing, and critical thinking abilities at many levels. I truly believe that all students have the potential to excel academically, and it's my pleasure to help them discover the key to unlocking their success. My tutoring style varies depending on the subject and student, but my core philosophy is that tutoring has the greatest long-term effect when students develop a passion for learning and acquire the critical thinking abilities and study habits to last throughout a lifetime. In addition to academia, I spend time teaching health workshops in under-served areas of Los Angeles. I also enjoy running, yoga, and spending time outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Computational economics applies computer science and numerical methods to solve economic problems and model complex market behaviors. It bridges theoretical economics with practical programming, allowing economists to simulate real-world scenarios, analyze large datasets, and test policy decisions before implementation.

Understanding computational economics is increasingly valuable because modern economic analysis relies heavily on computational tools. Whether you're studying macroeconomic forecasting, financial modeling, or agent-based simulations, these skills are essential for advanced economics coursework and careers in finance, policy analysis, and research.

Many students struggle with the intersection of economics theory and programming practice. Common challenges include:

  • Translating economic concepts into code—understanding which algorithms match which economic problems
  • Building comfort with programming languages (Python, R, MATLAB) while simultaneously learning economic models
  • Debugging numerical methods and interpreting computational results within an economic framework
  • Managing large datasets and optimizing code for complex simulations

Personalized instruction addresses these by breaking down the integration of theory and practice, allowing students to strengthen foundational programming skills while building economic intuition at their own pace.

In a classroom setting, instructors often move at a standard pace that may not align with individual learning needs. Computational economics requires simultaneous mastery of economics theory, programming syntax, and numerical methods—three complex areas that benefit from targeted attention.

Personalized tutoring allows a tutor to identify whether a student is struggling with the economic concept, the programming implementation, or the mathematical foundation—and address the specific gap. Tutors can spend extra time on debugging code together, walk through economic model design step-by-step, and customize examples to match a student's learning style, leading to deeper understanding and stronger problem-solving skills.

An excellent computational economics tutor should have strong credentials in both economics and computer science. Look for tutors with:

  • Advanced coursework or degrees in economics, financial engineering, or related fields
  • Proven programming expertise in languages commonly used in computational economics (Python, R, MATLAB, or Julia)
  • Experience with econometric modeling, simulation, and numerical optimization
  • Ability to explain both the 'why' (economic theory) and the 'how' (implementation)
  • Track record helping students improve grades and build confidence in problem-solving

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who meet these standards and have experience teaching students at your level, whether you're starting with foundational concepts or working on advanced research projects.

With consistent personalized instruction, students typically see measurable improvements including: stronger grasp of how to model economic problems computationally, ability to write and debug code confidently, improved exam and assignment grades, and increased comfort tackling complex problem sets independently.

Beyond grades, many students develop the analytical mindset needed for upper-level coursework and graduate programs. They learn to approach unfamiliar economic models methodically, test their assumptions through simulation, and communicate results clearly—skills that transfer directly to research projects and professional work in economics, finance, and policy analysis.

Computational economics typically appears as an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course, often following intermediate microeconomics and econometrics. Some programs integrate computational methods throughout the curriculum, while others offer it as a specialized elective. The course usually covers agent-based modeling, numerical optimization, equilibrium computation, and data analysis using economic software.

Understanding where computational economics sits in your program's sequence helps identify prerequisite skills you may need to strengthen. Personalized tutoring can ensure you have solid foundations in linear algebra, calculus, and programming before diving into computational methods, and can align instruction with your specific course objectives and assignments.

Python is currently the most popular choice for computational economics due to its readability, extensive libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas), and strong community support. R is widely used for statistical analysis and econometrics. MATLAB remains common in academic settings for numerical computation, and Julia is increasingly used for high-performance computing in complex economic models.

The specific language depends on your program and career goals, but Python proficiency is the strongest starting point for most students. A tutor can help you master whichever language your course requires, teach you how to structure economic models in code, and build the debugging skills necessary to work independently on computational projects.
