I have always loved Math and Science, and my desire to learn has not yet subsided. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, and a Doctorate in Biochemistry. I enjoy teaching, training, and tutoring students of all levels in Math and Science. Although each student is different, I treat every case with equal conviction and effort from the most humble to the highest aspiring goals. Boredom and frustration are the source of nearly every student's struggles. Consistently my students say I clarify the most complex problems, transforming impossibly tedious and confounding coursework into an exciting and manageable challenge. I do this by relating the latest discoveries and personal anecdotes to the subject matter, making the ancient, esoteric theories tangible and fresh. When I am not reading and writing about science, or planning strategies to make math and science more accessible, I am playing with my dog, watching zombie movies or systematically sampling every slice of pizza in Boston.

I believe that information should be accessible to all people. We live in an interesting but complicated world and I like to be the translator between difficult information and those who want the information. I actually won second place in a Lecture Competition where we were judged on how well we were able to breakdown difficult engineering projects and explain them to non-engineering students and professionals. It was at this point that I learned I loved the process! I have worked as an engineer and also as a college professor (10 yrs.)Before working, I got both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) I also took Doctorate Level courses in Educational LeadershipI tutor most science and math course from Chemistry to Calculus to Physics. I love Geometry, Algebra, and Chemistry! I think these courses are the building blocks for all the more complicated courses. And I believe if you can understand these courses, you can build up to understand most everything. For me, learning this information has helped me simply this complicated world and makes everyday life easier for my brain to take in.My teaching philosophy is pretty simple. Everyone can connect to the information, but it is my job to figure out how. This is why I love math and science...it surrounds us everyday!Outside of teaching and/or taking courses, I love to visit family, hike, and travel as much as possible.

I am currently a second year medical student. In college, I studied biology, chemistry, physics, and Spanish with a biology major and chemistry minor. I also spent 6 weeks studying Spanish in Ecuador. I really enjoy helping others learn Spanish, and my second favorite subject would be any sort of biology or related topic. I hope to help you reach your goals by helping you work through the learning process rather than just giving answers, and hopefully we can make it interesting and even fun!

An African man once said "If you want people to understand you, speak their language." I am fluent in 3 and a half languages. The reason why I say 3 and a half instead of 4 it is because the fourth one is not practiced as much as I would love to. Born and raised in Haiti (Central America), I automatically grew up bilingual speaking both Haitian Creole and French. At the age of 8 I was already proficient in English, by the age of 12 I was introduced to Spanish. In 2007, my family decided to move to America due to political problems. Adjusting to the American culture took me some time, but I quickly understood it because I already spoke the language. Foreigners I encountered throughout my path in life were always eager to speak to me because I understood them in a way that others did not simply because I spoke their language. The power of understanding someone else's language is amazing and can build lifetime relationships. I am here today to help you speak my language so you can understand me and my culture better.

I recently graduated from Bard College at Simon's Rock with a BA in Physics and Visual Studies. My research areas in Physics include quantum optics and geophysics, particularly about entanglement and the Earth's inner core, respectively. My focus in Visual Studies is lens arts and film studies with a strong lean towards formalism. The two disciplines may seem very unrelated to you, but it is the combination of the two that makes me a great student and teacher! A few fun facts about my college experience: I actually finished high school in 3 years and began college a year earlier than usual, and I studied abroad in Scotland (University of Glasgow) and the Czech Republic (Film Academy of Prague) during my junior year!My teaching experience include peer tutoring during my college years, working with both individual students and entire classes on college-level physics, math, and Spanish. Just after receiving my BA, I designed and taught my first full course on Climate Change at the 10th grade level. We covered all sorts of material, including the Physics and Chemistry of the atmosphere and ocean, all the way to a Model UN simulation to discuss global policies!I am moving onto a PhD program in Physics at Northeastern University, but I hope to continue to teaching throughout and after the program. I love helping students reach their potential. The pride and joy of watching my students come to an understanding with new concepts, develop a love for new disciplines, and find passion for learning -- it is the most beautiful thing I have experienced. And it's all thanks to you, the amazing, bright, and motivated students!

I recently graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor's of Science in Marketing and a passion for teaching others! I have five years experience working as a program aide for an elementary school and two years experience tutoring high school students. When it comes to tutoring my motto is "Show don't Tell!" and I believe that any student has the opportunity to do better with the right resources and attitude. I can help with most math and english ranging from elementary to high school as well as ACT test prep. I especially like helping with essays (providing I have read the book or material it is based on). My biggest interests outside of tutoring are beach volleyball and comedy, but I also love reading, and I even occasionally DJ.

I have an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and a graduate degree from Boston College. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown with a major in History and a minor in Government. I focused on both U.S. and Middle Eastern history at Georgetown, and was invited to write an Honors thesis for the History department my senior year. After graduating from Georgetown, I began my studies at Boston College where I received a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I am now a history teacher at a public school in Massachusetts, where I teach U.S. History I and II, as well as Modern U.S. History. Not surprisingly, my favorite subject to teach and to tutor is History. I am most passionate about the history of the U.S. since 1945, but as I am sure most of my students will attest, I truly do find the history of any nation or time period fascinating. I also enjoy teaching and tutoring for the SATs and other standardized exams, in part because I believe that any student can improve once he or she knows how to study, and most importantly, how to build the endurance to take a standardized test as lengthy as the SAT. I approach the SATs much in the same way that I approach running – if unit tests in school are one-mile warm-ups, then the SAT is a marathon. With the right training (and dedication), I firmly believe that any student can improve. I have taught SAT prep classes in a variety of capacities. I worked for a major SAT prep company while in graduate school, and also piloted my district’s SAT prep course (which I designed the curricula for). I take a collaborative approach to teaching, and both in the classroom and one-on-one, I believe that the best way for a student to learn material is to move beyond recall and work toward synthesis and analysis for complete understanding. When I’m not teaching or tutoring, I love to read history books (especially those about Robert Kennedy), run (long distances – in all types of weather), and travel. The most incredible place I have been is Tanzania – if I hadn’t packed three massive Teddy Roosevelt biographies in my suitcase, I definitely would have brought home many more souvenirs.

I believe that education should be a diverse, student-focused, lifelong pursuit. I earned a BS in Economics and a minor in Film and Media studies from the University of Rochester, and am always seeking out new learning opportunities in my post graduate life. Through participation in a volunteer tutoring program on weekends, I discovered the satisfaction of helping students reach their potential. I've found that any student can enjoy learning when it's catered to their learning style and needs. A strong education can be a path not only to academic success, but also personal growth. Students aren't just learning science or writing, they're learning confidence, independence, and good habits.

Frequently Asked Questions
IB Economics HL combines theoretical concepts with real-world application, which requires students to think critically across multiple levels. The most common challenges include:
- Mastering both microeconomics and macroeconomics: Students must understand individual markets and entire economies simultaneously, which demands strong conceptual connections.
- Applying economic theories to case studies: The course emphasizes evaluation and analysis rather than memorization, requiring students to defend positions using economic reasoning.
- Mathematical rigor: Graphs, equations, and quantitative analysis are woven throughout, and students often struggle with the mathematical foundations needed for statistical concepts.
- Essay writing under timed pressure: Paper 3 requires students to synthesize knowledge and communicate complex ideas clearly within strict word limits.
Personalized tutoring addresses these challenges by breaking complex concepts into digestible pieces and giving students targeted practice in their weaker areas.
IB Economics HL covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics across two years. The course is organized around core concepts like scarcity, efficiency, and sustainability, with students expected to evaluate trade-offs and real-world implications of economic policies.
You'll develop skills in:
- Analyzing supply and demand, elasticity, and market structures
- Understanding inflation, unemployment, and economic growth
- Evaluating fiscal and monetary policy decisions
- Assessing development economics and globalization
- Constructing arguments with economic evidence
The course assesses your understanding through three papers testing knowledge recall, application, and analytical thinking. Success requires moving beyond textbook definitions to evaluating which economic theories best explain real-world situations.
The best tutors for IB Economics HL combine subject expertise with the ability to make abstract concepts tangible. Look for someone who:
- Understands the IB assessment criteria deeply: They know exactly what examiners reward in essays and calculations, and can guide you toward higher-level responses.
- Connects theory to real events: Economics comes alive when tutors reference current events, company decisions, or policy changes to illustrate concepts.
- Diagnoses conceptual gaps: Rather than reteaching everything, strong tutors identify where your understanding breaks down and rebuild from there.
- Teaches graph interpretation and construction: Since diagrams are central to demonstrating economic thinking, tutors should help you draw and analyze them fluently.
- Prepares you for timed writing: They provide structured feedback on practice essays and help you develop strategies for organizing arguments quickly.
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have proven expertise in IB Economics HL and understand how to guide students toward 6s and 7s.
Improvement depends on where you're starting and how consistently you work, but students typically see measurable gains within 4-8 weeks of focused tutoring. Common improvements include:
- Better essay structure and analysis: Students often jump from a 5 or 6 to a 7 by learning to evaluate trade-offs and justify positions more rigorously.
- Faster problem-solving: With targeted practice on graphs and calculations, many students gain confidence and accuracy on quantitative questions.
- Deeper conceptual understanding: When tutors help you see connections between topics (like how interest rates affect both investment and currency values), the entire course becomes more coherent and memorable.
Personalized instruction accelerates improvement because tutoring focuses on your specific gaps rather than reviewing material you already understand. Many students find that a few hours of expert guidance clarifies concepts that weeks of solo study couldn't untangle.
Ideally, tutoring begins early in Year 1 of the course to build a strong conceptual foundation and prevent gaps from widening. However, students benefit from tutoring at any stage—even those preparing for final exams.
Frequency depends on your current performance and goals:
- Preventative tutoring: One 1-hour session per week during the course helps solidify new concepts as they're introduced in class.
- Targeted support: Two sessions per week works well if you're struggling with specific topics like equilibrium analysis or monetary policy.
- Intensive exam prep: As finals approach, many students increase to 2-3 sessions weekly for focused paper practice and last-minute concept review.
The most important factor is consistency. Regular sessions build momentum and allow tutors to track your progress across topics, whereas sporadic meetings feel fragmented. Varsity Tutors helps you find a schedule that fits your other commitments while keeping you on track toward your goal score.
Paper 3 tests your ability to evaluate economic questions and defend positions—it's not just about knowing the content, but arguing skillfully with evidence. Common essay weaknesses include:
- Stating theories without evaluating their relevance to the specific question
- Failing to acknowledge trade-offs or limitations of economic policies
- Organizing ideas in ways that don't build a coherent argument
- Using vague language instead of precise economic terminology
Expert tutors improve your essays by teaching you to structure responses around clear arguments, use real-world examples strategically, and weigh competing perspectives. Practice under timed conditions is essential—you'll learn to outline quickly, prioritize high-impact points, and use economic vocabulary naturally. Many students find that working through 3-4 past paper essays with a tutor who gives detailed feedback transforms their confidence and score significantly.
You don't need to be a math expert, but you do need comfort with graphs, basic algebra, and interpreting data. IB Economics HL emphasizes economic reasoning far more than complex calculus, though you will encounter:
- Supply and demand curve analysis and elasticity calculations
- Interpreting statistical diagrams and economic indicators
- Simple optimization problems in microeconomics
- Percentage changes and growth rate calculations
If math isn't your strength, tutoring can specifically target the quantitative foundations you need. Tutors break down graph interpretation step-by-step, help you practice calculations until they feel automatic, and teach you to spot patterns in data. Most students find that once they see how the math connects to economic logic, the concepts become much clearer. A few focused sessions on mathematical foundations early on often prevents math anxiety from derailing your entire course.
