I'm a current PhD student in the history department at Georgetown University who is also an experienced instructor with Varsity Tutors. As a recipient of several degrees, the most recent being a BA in history from Hillsdale College and a MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from Stanford University, I have long sought to make teaching my profession. Meanwhile, as a volunteer grade school teacher and a tutor with this company, I have many years' experience helping students reach their full potential. I am capable of teaching students in many subjects, including reading, mathematics, test prep, Latin, and especially writing, history, and literature. In practice, I am comfortable adapting to different learning styles and specific student preferences. I am currently an undergraduate student at Rice University pursuing a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology on the pre-med track. One of my most memorable experiences in the medical field has been working as a research intern at Texas Children's Hospital and collaborating with genetic specialists to publish a research paper about a rare genetic disease. Medicine is truly one of my greatest passions, and biology has been one of my favorite subjects to tutor through the peer mentorship program at my high school. Through this program, I have also extensively tutored math (from middle school math all the way through IB Mathematics) and find myself drawn by the methodical nature of the subject. Many times, I find that students simply label math as "difficult" because the concepts are brand new and numbers seem like a foreign language. Relating math concepts to simpler everyday ones is one of the many strategies I use when tutoring math, and I have found a lot of success through it. Throughout high school, I have been very active in my school community as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, president of the Speech and Debate Team, and president and founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Club. Through these roles, I have mentored younger students in areas such as writing, research, and public speaking. Additionally, I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish), although my favorite one to teach is Spanish. Attending an international school has emphasized to me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance, and I believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to reinforce these ideals. In my spare time, you can find me engrossed in arts and crafts, running my Etsy store, or volunteering my local art museum's kids' crafts classes. I have worked as a research biologist with the US Forest Service and US Geological Survey and as a biology professor at the University of Puerto Rico and Eastern Kentucky University. For the past 8 years, I have taught biology at a public high school in Mississippi as well as at two local community colleges. I am passionate about biology, in particular ecology, environmental science and botany. As a teacher and tutor, I always focus on creating an environment that is student-centered and promotes student success. I feel that a solid background in science is essential for success in many careers, and I enjoy working with students to help them achieve their goals. I lived and worked in Portugal and Brazil as a teacher and translator for 9 years, following which I returned to the U.S. to pursue a PhD in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University and then taught Portuguese at Yale. Although I mainly research Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) Africa in my academic life, I have knowledge of and experience with all the main varieties of Portuguese and Lusophone cultures.
