I covered the homework math assignment with the student, including finding the volumes of spheres, cylinder, cones; explaining the Pythagorean Theorem and finding the missing sides of the triangles and finding the areas of largest squares. I covered some science with him as well; I explained the difference between Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes and the Membrane-Bound Organelles.

The student and I went over his Chapter 2 homework due tomorrow. We did two problems together; one concerning mean in a sample population and standard deviation. Next, we did a problem with the five number summary for a sample of 20. He is dong well. We also talked about his test on Thursday and prepped for his lecture tomorrow.

Today we covered some trigonometry topics including special right triangles, trig functions, the unit circle and solving for missing parts of a triangle. We covered four lessons and four quizzes. The student is doing a great job of keeping up with the writing assignments in between sessions. His overall grade for the year is climbing quickly and I think it might be possible to get him up to a B by the time we are done.

Tutoring review by Leeanne in Temple City, CA
Today, the student and I mainly discussed displacement, velocity, and acceleration and how to calculate them using equations for average velocity, average acceleration, and the four kinematic equations. Her main issues were with notation, terminology, and understanding the difference between a vector and scalar quantity. She seemed to be a bit taken aback by the material at the beginning of the session, but by the end she seemed very optimistic. I discovered a main source of her concern was with the terminology, so we discussed that a lot. I gave her real world examples for a conceptual understanding, and tips on how to express equations and variables in words, which definitely helped her a lot. Before she left, she was able to set up a more complicated problem on her own. By me pointing out that the only physics involved in a problem is knowing how to set up the equations, and to solve them she had to use her already developed algebra, geometry, and trigonometry skills, she clearly had a breakthrough.

Tutoring review by Bridget in Temple City, CA
I was impressed with the student's existing SAT Reading skills and I'm confident he will succeed on his upcoming test. In this session, we covered some practice test questions on reading comprehension, sentence completion, identifying sentence errors and improving sentences. We also covered some grammar areas, like verb tenses, subject/verb agreement and semicolon usage. Additionally, we tested on some vocabulary roots. For tomorrow's session, we're going to take a look at some aspects that have been a little more challenging. Specifically, I'm going to form a lesson plan that revolves around difficult reading comprehension questions, vocabulary and grammar. He excels with the majority of the material already, so we're going to take a closer look at more complicated things that could come up. As extra practice, I recommended he make some flashcards on the root words to help with memorizing vocabulary. Overall, he's doing great!

We covered the material for the student's upcoming test on Tuesday, which was translations, expansions and compressions of functions. She struggled slightly with defining the function as odd or even, but understood it quickly after some explanation. She looks like she has prepared well for the test and should perform well.
