Hi! I'm Marla. I specialize in SAT Prep (Math and Verbal), Elementary and Middle School Math, Algebra, Geometry and Essay Writing. I particularly enjoy test taking and solving tricky math questions. I will help your student learn to enjoy the process, so he or she is better able to excel!I am originally from Los Angeles and have a BA in Psychology from Pomona College. I'm also a singer and musician and recently went back to school to pursue a graduate degree in Music Education. My long term goal is to become an Elementary or Middle School Choir Director.

I am a new graduate of Pomona College, in Claremont, CA, where I studied Religion and Philosophy. While there, I wrote many papers of a wide variety, working on strong arguments, organization, and phrasing. I peer edited as well as volunteering with groups that mentored high school students, focusing on college admissions work, continuing and expanding my experiences from high school of tutoring for standardized testing. Additionally, I taught beginning violin to younger children.I like to tutor basic math, as helping students understand the basic concepts and learn to apply them by themselves is very rewarding--give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but teach him to fish and he'll be set for life, type of deal. My favorite, however, is to tutor writing and reading, as these are my own favorite things to do. I think the art of writing is one of the most important, as it effects how you present yourself, as well as how convincing your work is. There is nothing that does not, at least in part, require writing skills--even scientists and mathematicians have to publish papers. In my free time, I love to read and discuss philosophy, religion, and human nature with friends (I am the epitome of the liberal arts student--I love to learn, and hope to do so for my whole life). I am also outdoorsy, and I love to hike and backpack, as well as horseback ride (used to compete in hunter-jumpers, now somewhat limited but I ride when I can). Music is my other major activity, and I sing classical soprano, play violin, and can do some basic guitar--enough to accompany myself and friends when we sing folk songs and popular music, and to support us as we make up harmonies.Travel is also extremely important to me, and I've spent a lot of time in South Asia, especially, from studying abroad there to trekking to volunteering. I think the challenges of travelling in unfamiliar places is incredibly mind opening and helps us to understand the world around us, which is one of the most important things to do in this globalizing world.
HELPING YOU GET ACROSS THE GOAL LINE!I graduated with a double major in physics and philosophy and I believe that my background has given me ease when it comes to understanding student needs and organizing an effective teaching plan. Nevada is currently ranked at the very end when it comes to education in the United States and coming from immigrant parents didn't help me either when it came to my education. Consequently, my love for teaching comes from the fact that I feel that by teaching, I can give to others what I lacked. It started from an early age when I tutored 6th graders in middle school who were struggling in math and continues to this day. I taught SAT seminars at my high school, public speaking classes, and leadership classes. In recent times, I have taught and tutored physics, dancing, Spanish, and mathematics.
I graduated from NYU's Steinhardt School of Education with my dual Masters degrees in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. I am also a certified teacher for birth through 2nd grade and have my certification in Students with Disabilities. I previously attended Pomona College where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English. I have taught for two years in a preschool prior to enrolling at NYU. I am passionate about providing each child I encounter with a lifelong love of learning and curiosity. I am able to tutor all aspects of ELA in Elementary School, including reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, phonics, decoding, comprehension and more, which are my favorite to teach or tutor. In addition, I am very proficient and eager to help with all aspects of English and essay writing or editing from elementary school through college, including SAT English and College Application Essays. I love to make tutoring sessions fun with games that accomplish goals rather than rote memorization or school-like lessons and homework. I meet students where they are in their work and in terms of their interests so that they are included in the work we do together. Outside of tutoring, I love reading, yoga, psychoanalysis and my two cats.
I am a graduate of Pomona College. In 2012, I received my Bachelor of Arts with a major in Politics. Since graduation, I have worked in both public and private schools as an instructional assistant. My job responsibilities included tutoring students in the following subjects: Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus, English/Language Arts, Writing, Social Studies, U.S. Government, Biology, and Social Studies. Of the many subjects I have helped my students with, subjects involving math or politics have been my favorite, because both challenge me to think creatively and critically. My tutoring philosophy is to help create independent and critical thinkers. My style reflects this style: The ultimate goal in every tutoring session is NOT to get the right answers, but to understand the concepts being taught and to be able to apply that understanding to a variety of situations. Outside of working with students, I enjoy reading and running.
I majored in Neuroscience at Pomona College and am in my last year of medical school at New York Medical College. I've worked with high school, middle school, and elementary school students and can teach any Math subject up until Algebra II, Biological sciences, and SAT prep. The most important thing to me about tutoring is making sure that what I do actually works for you--being creative and flexible are essential. Let me know how I can help you!
I have always been a passionate learner. I have a Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics Economics from Pomona College in Claremont, California and am working on my Masters in International Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs in the City of New York. I have also taught accelerated mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus BC) at the Episcopal School of Los Angeles and economics as a high school elective. Over the past few years of teaching and tutoring, I found great joy in developing that passion in other students. My favorite subject to tutor is upper level mathematics (Algebra II and beyond). This is when the true beauty of mathematics is explored and mathematics begins to have important applications, including what to what I do in international security! I stride to provide a student with creative materials and explanations that best suits their learning style. I am not someone who is satisfied when a student memorizes steps to solve a problem. I always want the student to understand what he/she is doing and why they are doing. This insight will make them a stronger, faster and better student, particularly in the field of mathematics. This brings the student long term results that could extend far beyond the work done in the tutoring sessions. Mathematics is my love and economics is my passion and because of this I bring incredible enthusiasm for the subject to my work. I bring the beauty of mathematics into my explanations, through theoretical and visual interpretations. In my spare time I like to paint and run.

I am open to helping you learn Chinese or Japanese no matter where you are in the learning process.I am an experienced translator and mentor with a bachelor's degree in Asian Studies from Pomona College. I am a credentialed teacher with ten years of experience. I have an M.A. in Teaching from USC (Multiple Subject/K-6) and a B.A. in Music from Pomona College. I have taught individual and group violin lessons from age 3 to adults throughout L.A., and I have taught general music in the Lawndale School District and at YOLA (Youth Orchestra L.A.) at HOLA (Heart of LA youth center in the Rampart District). I student-taught in general elementary school classrooms (2nd and 5th grade), and have tutored students at YOLA.No matter what the subject, my focus has always been on finding the unique strengths of each individual student, and building on those strengths to approach areas of struggle. I enjoy working with students with diverse learning styles and discovering the unique ways each student takes in and understands information. I firmly believe that everyone is smart in their own way, and I love to discover and appreciate each student's way of learning and thinking. I believe that we all construct our own knowledge through experience - we learn by doing, by experimenting, trying, and experiencing - and I encourage my students to try out and adjust their own strategies, instead of always expecting them to do it my way.I am an artist, writer and musician (I led a folk band for 5 years). I am an avid public transit rider and often get around by bicycle. I enjoy gardening and I am passionate about building community.
I am a writer and editor with a B.A. in English from Pomona College. I mostly enjoy tutoring English, but math and science come easily to me as well. I love helping students get the most from their education. That moment when the material finally connects is everything. Outside of academia, I enjoy making music, reading, and working on my novel.

I graduated from Pomona College with a major in Neuroscience and am planning to become a neurological physical therapist. In school, I particularly enjoyed learning about the biological sciences and art. I love to draw and always try to find fun ways to integrate visual learning into my tutoring sessions. I also have experience with the ACT and GRE standardized tests and would love to assist any student who is trying to prepare for success on either. Standardized tests are a drag but studying for them doesn't have to be! I love ice cream and comics and am excited to start working and learning with students in the LA area.
