My name is Amelia. I'm originally from Massachusetts- I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry in 2012.Along with my work at Varsity Tutors, I also currently work as an educator and content writer for online learning platforms. I'm passionate about teaching, engaging with students, and helping them build confidence in their studies and become eager to learn. I'm a big believer in meeting the student where he or she is and going from there. My approach is very student centered and is definitely not a one size fits all approach.I look forward to meeting you in the classroom!

Growing up, I always wanted to teach; however, I am also creative and broad in my studies. I earned my bachelor's in fine arts at Oregon State University, then I volunteered in elementary schools, then I became a Grad Mentor at a high school for a few years, and now I am earning my Masters in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. I love taking time out of my day to help students (Child or adult) learn so they can understand more of what the world has to offer. I also take great joy and care helping student's overcome the challenges that come with ADHD. Please understand I am also a single mother and have scheduled my time to accommodate taking care of my child and assisting your education in the best way I possibly can.
I am a 37 year old fine artist working mainly in oil and watercolor painting. My degree specialization is painting and drawing, but I expanded my education to include printmaking and book arts, as well as more industry-based skills like character design for tv and movies and sequential art (think sunday funnies and comic books). My style of imparting artistic skill encompasses two ideas: (1) Art is communication. Learn the 'rules' so that you, as the artist, can bend the rules with intention and bring the viewer into your world. (2) Internal motivation is key. Finding a student's internal motivator and weaving that into whatever skill we are working on is something I consider imperative to long-term success. I have less than a year of formal tutoring experience, but I do have more than 2 years of professional experience working with disabled and neurodivergent adults and children with varying access needs, teaching both life skills and art classes.
I was born and raised in China. I'm fluent in Chinese speaking, listening, and writing. I have a Bachelor's degree in English from Nanjing Forestry University. In college, I was an English Teacher in Global Education Organization Nanjing School for over one year. I was also a private Chinese tutor for two kids (age six and thirteen) from one American family who was living in China, as well as an adult from Australia. Through my teaching experiences, I've found I teach language in a friendly, patient, and interesting way. I also earned my Master's Degree in Academy of Art University in San Francisco, majoring in Fashion Merchandising. I worked for a jewelry company and a home fashion textile company back in San Francisco and recently relocated in Portland in Jan 2015. My hobbies and interests include traveling and painting.
I've always loved art and am passionate about creating things in different mediums. After taking every art class offered in grade school and winning several contests/awards, I earned an Associate in Specialized Business with high honors (Alpha Society, President's Award, Dean's List) from Douglas Education Center, a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors (Cum Laude, President's Honor Roll), and a Master of Arts in Illustration from Academy of Art University.Inspired by the old masters as well as modern artists, I have experience in a variety of areas including drawing, traditional/digital painting, and graphic design for narrative, editorial, and advertising projects. I like to mix mediums and have fun creating distinctive styles, and I enjoy working with subject matter ranging from figurative, floral, fantasy, and everything in between. Professionally, my work can be seen on military bases, book covers, business logos, an array of products such as clothing and home goods, and displayed in homes throughout the country. I'm from the east coast and have traveled the world during my service with the Air Force, where I also instructed aircrew students on checklist discipline and the responsibilities of being an aerial refueling specialist, as well as passenger handling and operational cargo movements around the globe.I'm passionate about guiding students as they find/strengthen their creativity, and want them to be empowered to succeed. I mainly tutor subjects related to art such as drawing, painting, digital media, etc, but also do creative writing. Personally, I enjoy fitness/hiking, movies, books, being outdoors, food/cooking, and being with my cat. All of these things and so many more enrich my life and help me to be my best/healthiest physically, mentally, and spiritually.
