Hello there! I am a current undergraduate student at Occidental College, where I am majoring in Chemistry. I have a passion for teaching and engaging students with their education. There is little that is more rewarding than aiding a struggling student successfully. In high school, I was a member of the National Honors Society and relished the opportunities that organization provided me to tutor others. I love learning, and I love sharing that with others. What better way to engage others learning than tutoring?I enjoy video games and other computer related tasks, baseball, basketball, and I love to read.

I am a recent graduate from Occidental College. My major was geology and my minor was economics. I also have coursework in math, biology, and physics. I like to break down large systems into digestible components that are easy to understand and then relate them back to the large scale topic at hand.

My roots in education stretch back to early high school, when I volunteered as an educator at a wildlife camp in Massachusetts. Since then, I have tutored sixth grade math in the highly-competitive City Year program through AmeriCorps, and worked for a year as an after-school educator in an elementary school. I come from a family of educators, who instilled in me a belief that education is the key to unlocking many doors that one might have never even known existed. I strongly believe that education is so much more than a means to any sort of professional ends, and is rather tied to our innate desire to understand the world around us. It is this philosophy that motivates me to mentor others so that they might reach their fullest potential, both personally and professionally.Music and guitar: I began studying guitar in 2007. Since then, I have spent eight years taking formal guitar lessons, four years playing in my high school jazz band, and two summers spent taking classes at the world-renowned Berklee College of Music, all while continuing to compose, perform, produce, and arrange my own original music. I have had my work featured on the radio in Boston, and have performed in a variety of different settings, including as a member of a free-improv ensemble with students from Berklee. I am well-versed in a variety of genres, including rock, pop, funk, jazz, metal, blues, and free-improv, and am eager to help students of all skill levels find their voices as musicians. I take a fairly theory-heavy approach to teaching music, as I believe that true mastery over any field begins with confidence, and one of the most comprehensive ways to build confidence in a field is by understanding that field's language.

Dr. LaFaid Johnson is a native of Los Angeles, where he also received his education. A graduate of Occidental College, Dr. Johnson received an M.A. from the California State University, Los Angeles, an M.A. in Organizational Development and Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. He is formerly a lecturer in the School of Business for the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where he taught Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management. Dr. Johnson also served as faculty advisor and Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow for the University of Michigan chapter of "Students in Free Enterprise" (SIFE).Dr. Johnson is an experienced educator in undergraduate and graduate education, specializing in adult-learning techniques, career development, and professional skills. He has expertise in applied research and advanced statistical analysis for behavioral assessments, test development, process modeling, performance planning, performance improvement, and data reporting.

I am currently a student at Occidental College in Los Angeles, where I major in Mathematics. I also play for my school's lacrosse team.My teaching method is very thorough. I work alongside my students every step of the way, helping them fully understand concepts.

I am currently a student at Occidental College, earning my B.A. in American Studies. I have tutored and taught students for the past five years in a variety of subjects in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Melbourne, Australia. I currently tutor in SAT writing and verbal preparation, essay writing skills, English, and Literature. My favorite subjects to tutor are definitely those that involve writing, because they provide fantastic opportunities for students to express their creativity. For the last year I have worked as a 6th and 7th grade English teacher at a small private school in Brooklyn. Before that, I worked in various editorial capacities in both print and online media. I am particularly interested in helping students with their reading and writing skills, though I am also happy to help with any test prep (SAT, GRE). I have worked with students age 7-18.

My name is Drew Andersen and I am a freshman studying Physics and Mathematics at Occidental College in Pasadena, California. I have been tutoring high school students in mathematics and science for the past 3 years. While my methods in teaching rely on a few fundamental principles, I realize that each student I come into contact with learns in very different ways. In 2018, Ripsime earned her Masters of Arts degree from Columbia University in Global Thought with an emphasis in Development Economics. Her time studying abroad in Madrid allowed her an opportunity to perfect her Spanish and embrace Spanish Literature. Ripsime has extensive experience working with a variety of learners including English as a Second Language students, honors and AP students in reading comprehension, writing, and grammar. She has extensive experience working with students needing support in history, math (up to Calculus), English, Spanish and Science. Ripsime specializes in working with elementary through high school students. She received her Bachelors of Arts from Occidental College in 2016 in Diplomacy and World Affairs with minors in Math and Economics.

I graduated from Occidental College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Comparative Literature, emphasizing critical theory. My tutoring spans a diverse range of experiences: I tutored math at an inner-city school in Los Angeles, English to students in Hyderabad, India, and reading to rehabilitated refugee children in Arizona. After graduating, I instructed reading programs for the Institute of Reading Development, where I saw that, as my students' reading skills improved, their overall confidence skyrocketed. They became better students because they stopped feeling incapable and inept. This experience is the foundation of my tutoring philosophy. I believe education increases one's own sense of ability and self-worth. Because of this, I aim to inspire interest and excitement in my students, not simply teach them effect ways to memorize a textbook. In this way, I agree with William B. Yeats in that "education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." I empower my students to seek answers on their own and develop their critical thinking skills. As a tutor, I structure my teaching around the student's individual interests and needs. For example, one 6th grade student loved to perform onstage, so we wrote a play to explore theme, plot, and dialogue. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, English and American history. In my free time, I teach yoga and write creative non-fiction. I love cooking, eating, and travel.
