My mission as a tutor is to help students grow using methods based on their needs and their style of learning. Every student is different, and as such, they should receive attention based on those differences. My job is to help them fully discover their style of learning and use it to their advantage.
When I get a tutoree I become invested in their progress and academic success and never have a 'my-way-or-the-high-way' mentality, but am flexible to trying to find new ways of teaching for however a particular student learns. I think this flexibility and dedication to making school work as easy as possible for my students is my strongest attribute as a tutor.I am available to work up to thirty hours per week. Friday through Sunday I would generally be free to tutor at any time; on Mondays, I am available during the day, and on Wednesdays, I am available from mid-afternoon (starting around three) through the evening. I am usually not available on Tuesdays or Thursdays. I would not need to take any month off.
I have been passionate about science and especially biology since I was 12 and that led to both a bachelors and Ph.D. It is my favorite subject to tutor because I love sharing understanding and knowledge about the subject and explaining the fascinating way in which biological systems operate. I also tutor in math since math and science are closely linked. I got my degrees at Occidental College and at the University of Texas at Austin. In college I discovered field biology was for me and I spent time working on a research boat and a year in Costa Rica when I did my graduate degree. I have worked with students throughout my career. In college I TAed and taught a course on the research boat. In grad school I taught classes and TAed. I also individually mentored some undergrads. Currently I volunteer half time at a middle school working with students in math and science as a classroom aide. I also developed a peer tutoring program at the school. I love working with people to help them understand concepts and ideas, especially young people. I believe the most important things in being a successful tutor are formation of a personal relationship, patience, and the ability to adapt to the learner's way and pace of acquiring information.
I am currently a student at Occidental College, earning my B.A. in American Studies. I have tutored and taught students for the past five years in a variety of subjects in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Melbourne, Australia. I currently tutor in SAT writing and verbal preparation, essay writing skills, English, and Literature. My favorite subjects to tutor are definitely those that involve writing, because they provide fantastic opportunities for students to express their creativity. One of my major goals in tutoring is to help students find a passion for learning the material they are presented with. In my free time I love attending comedy shows, playing volleyball at the beach, and finding new restaurants to eat at with friends.

My name is Drew Andersen and I am a freshman studying Physics and Mathematics at Occidental College in Pasadena, California. I have been tutoring high school students in mathematics and science for the past 3 years. While my methods in teaching rely on a few fundamental principles, I realize that each student I come into contact with learns in very different ways. I believe I am a good fit for your student not because of my knowledge in specific subjects, but my ability to cater to each student's individual learning strengths - creating a work environment in which your student is not only comfortable, but one in which they thrive.
