I graduated from the University of Mississippi, where I received a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education (K-6), while also receiving secondary education degrees (7-12) in English, history, and math. I later received my certification in SREB Math Ready as well. In 2021, I decided to go back to school, where I attended Delta State University. During my tenure, I received a master's degree in Education Administration and Supervision. I am currently getting ready to start my eleventh year as an educator in Northeast Mississippi. Over the last ten years, I have taught the following subjects: Foundations of Algebra, Algebra 1, 2, & 3, Geometry, College Algebra (facilitator), and Yearbook. I can tutor all elementary subjects from K-6 grades, along with math, English, and history for 7-12 grades. I'm most passionate about tutoring math. I believe that it is my job to reach and grow each and every student that I have the pleasure of educating. With that in mind, I also understand that everyone thinks differently, especially with mathematics. I work to find ways to make learning easier and less stressful.

PROFESSIONAL TEACHING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT |To teach with passion, knowledge, and integrity and to make a difference through teaching in the lives of all who come onto my path. To empower my students to think critically, to be expert problem solvers, and to demonstrate high ethical and moral values in decision-making.I am a passionate person and care deeply about my responsibility to role model what I teach to students. Professionalism must be modeled as well as taught, and I take the charge seriously. What I do in the classroom is effective only through what I say and do outside of the classroom, which may have more impact, especially when it involves one-on-one interaction.I have taught for more than 20+ years, and I am constantly changing how I teach to reach the ever-changing audience of students who come into the classroom. It is an exciting place, the classroom. It is like a crucible where the fire of my desires for them meets the boundless energy of their quest for learning. Sometimes we have ignition with great flame; and other times, it is just a small flickering light that emerges. I am sure, they are almost never aware they are on a quest, but I see it, and it is thrilling to be part of that journey.I am project oriented, and I design projects for my communications classes that reflect real world applications. It is as though they can practice now for the future in a safe place, where the stakes are not as high. They are challenged to go out into the business community and interact with working professionals. Many of them, before coming to my class, have not thought seriously about their future. Going into the outside world as a dressed-up professional is new territory for most of them. My class is centered on the development of a specific set of communication skills, but I challenge the students to create the course content specifically designed around their future career goals. I have many conversations in my office where they admit that they have no idea what they want to do in their future. It affords an excellent opportunity to direct, suggest, and help shape their thought processes. I take the role of mentor with great awe seeing the tremendous impact teachers have in the lives of students.I enjoy a relationship where I can know my students as I do my corporate clients and to some extent design a program around what their needs are in the short and long term. I want to create an environment where I can know if my students are having difficulty with a particular part of an assignment. I enjoy the luxury that a relationship affords, and strive to be accessible to my students. It is exciting to see how much personal growth they experience in such a short amount of time.I believe when they come to us, their moral behavior is already formed. We can only challenge them to discover what their code of conduct will be in making ethical decisions. We can present situational life challenges, and they decide. I do not believe we can increase their IQ (I know some disagree with this position), but I do believe we have an obligation to supply them the tools to help with their success when they are launched in the world outside.I love to teach, and to work with students in a one-on-one environment is the best of all worlds.

I completed both my Bachelors' and Masters' degrees at the University of Mississippi; I studied geology and soil science. I taught geology labs during my undergraduate studies, and expanded to leading field courses during my graduate school. I have a passion for the environment and Earth Sciences that I can't wait to share with you! I have also tutored extensively throughout high school and college. There is nothing so satisfying as helping a student perfect an essay or project into something they're proud to submit. While I am most passionate about Earth sciences/geology and English/writing, I am knowledgeable about and comfortable tutoring many subjects. I believe strongly in a liberal arts education. Being a well-rounded student allows for a deeper understanding and engagement with subject materials. For this reason, I work hard to connect my lessons to other topics or real world ideas that my students already understand and care about. I think that tailoring instruction to meet a student where they are is key to helping them grow academically. I hope to encourage natural curiosity and a love of learning in all my students. In my spare time, I love to hike, bake, read, dance, and spend time with my family.

**IMPORTANT: Please confirm any session that you and I book on your Varsity Tutors calendar before we meet. This is very important: I can only accept confirmed appointments. Again, if your appointment reads "unconfirmed," please confirm it before our meeting time. Email me if you have any questions.** Subjects I tutor: English/Language Arts (almost anything that qualifies under that umbrella, ranging from Kindergarten to college level). Degrees attained: Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.), Masters in Education (M.Ed.)., B.A. in English. State-certified teacher. Nearly twenty years' teaching experience. Favorite subject: Writing. I love all things reading and writing. If you have questions, please feel free to message me. I'm eager to meet with you! Personal statement: No matter how you currently view your situation in school, a great teacher can help beyond far more than just improving your grades. They can change your worldview. I should know. While I loved school as a kid, I had several terrible experiences in my early teenage years that left me feeling totally disconnected with everything education-related. A change in schools, and getting connected with some amazing teachers, turned things around for me. I started doing well in school again. I generally began to care about what I studied. It took words of encouragement from a few teachers who didn't accept anything less than my best work. I worked exhaustively, slowly beginning to understand that a bad experience or two did not make me a failure. I loved reading and writing, but never viewed it as more than a passing interest. It took a teacher to get me to care. Now I write professionally. I became an English major in undergrad. I now have a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership with a cognate in Student Development. I am also a Washington State-certified teacher that I received alongside an M.A. in Education (2006), educated and experienced in instructing both pre-college and postsecondary students according to various program- and state-based standards. That means not only can I teach you English and Language Arts, but I can advise you for college, teach you study skills, and help you prepare a plan to graduate and manage your coursework. I learned how to teach reading when I went for my Masters in Education, so I can work with you if you're having difficulty reading as well. In terms of English, Language Arts, or writing, I'm certified to handle almost anything along those lines from Kindergarten to college. And if, for whatever reason, I can't help you with your problem, we'll figure out something together. Point being, I didn't learn any of this by my lonesome. Someone had to show me that I wasn't a failure and help me see my own potential. That is exactly what I want for you to actualize your potential. I want you navigating school successfully and learning to love English, and reading, and books, because once you learn to love a subject in school, your entire world will change. English, or math, or science, or whatever you find appealing, can become a building block for your personal interests or career. You may produce a great work of art someday, or save someone's life due to your communication skills. My goal is to help you to see it as possible within you. You'll have to work hard. That's our agreement from day one: if you want to improve at anything, you must be willing to work for it. But tutoring is different from a traditional classroom because you are both the student and customer. It'll take up to two sessions for me to assess your situation in school, your learning needs, and what you hope to achieve from this experience. Do you simply want to improve your grades, or can improving your writing skills benefit you elsewhere? We'll also do a root cause analysis of why you might be struggling, if that's the case. If a subject in school is giving you trouble, our goal is to work together to determine what exactly is causing the problem for you before we treat it. After I assess your learning needs, and I get an idea of exactly what you want from your learning experience, I'll prepare a treatment plan based on my understanding of what could help you improve. We won't begin a single lesson until you and your parent/legal guardian approve of the plan. The beauty of tutoring is that it's all about your needs, your interests, your learning style. You don't have twenty other students who all need the same help--the appointment is entirely yours. Contact me and let's set up an appointment. I'm excited to speak with you.

Education changes lives and enriches the future. It nurtures minds and shapes the world around us. To achieve the main educational objectives of both undergraduate and graduate programs, my primary goal is to teach the course materials in a clear, concise, and engaging manner. For this purpose, I take advantage of a variety of pedagogical techniques to make my lectures interactive and to respond to the students' needs and abilities. I help all students learn essential concepts of the course and allow an open ground for students to communicate and share their ideas among the entire class. Beyond transferring technical knowledge, my endeavor is to foster critical thinking among students, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and enrich their intellectual strength, particularly in science and mathematics. It is also important for me to familiarize students with state-of-the-art engineering principles in both practice and research, and to prepare them in developing a future plan to enter the professional work place.

My name is Sarah Peterson. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri. I graduated from the University of Mississippi in 2021 with a B.S in Chemistry with minors in Math and Society and Health. I graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical Center with a M.S in Biomedical Sciences in 2022. This August I just finished my B.S in Nursing at Goldfarb School of Nursing in St. Louis. I currently am located in Chicago. I have tutored other students throughout my educational career and always was leading study groups with my friends. I also participated in a year long volunteer program where I tutored a 5th grade student in all subjects to assist them with the transition to online learning during COVID. I work best with 1-on-1 or small groups (5 or less). Rather than teaching a specific subject, I excel in helping students fill in the gaps they do not know through questions, quizzes, homework, etc. I love working through problems (homework, in class work, textbook questions, etc.) with students as I think applied learning is the most effective use of time with tutoring. My strengths are science and math. However, since it has been a bit since I have taken some of these classes, I ask for a little heads up on what the subject matter is so I can review it before the session. I am very flexible with timing of tutoring sessions and I would consider communication and time management strengths of mine.
