I graduated from the University of Oregon with a BA in Mathematics and concurrently completed a BA in Spanish. Currently I'm working on completing a MS in Statistics at Portland State University. I enjoy playing guitar, reading, learning foreign languages and math. I've loved math for the way it offers never-ending opportunities of discovery and ways for people to push the boundaries of their abilities and knowledge. I believe that with a strong motivation to work hard, and some encouragement, that we're all capable of excelling at math despite however difficult it may be.Working as a ninth grade math teacher in a public school in Mozambique as a Peace Corps Volunteer I've had experience teaching and tutoring hundreds of students. Additionally, I have worked with kids as young as elementary school up to adults to understand algebra, arithmetic, geometry and calculus in English as well as in Spanish. I am also equipped to tutor beginning and intermediate Spanish learners.As a tutor, I consider the student's prior knowledge of subject matter as well as his/her strengths, and difficulties when approaching a manner of instruction. Moving at a slow rate, I provide explanations and examples of the concepts at hand and then allow the student opportunities to test his/her knowledge. With appropriate motivation, encouragement and time, anybody can overcome his/her difficulties and learn something new and valuable.

I'm an electrical engineer working in the pro audio hardware industry. I currently hold a MSEE and BSEE with a minor in physics. I've also been a professional musician since the late 90s. I graduated from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon with a Ph.D. in System Science/Mathematics. My written and oral comprehensive exams were in Statistics, Probability, Analysis and System Science. I also have a Master of Science Degree in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Math with Honors with a Minor in Computer Science. I have also passed the SOA exam on probability, and am currently studying for the next one on financial mathematics. Outside of academia, I enjoy science fiction, MMA, video games and documentaries.In tutoring math students, I have learned the importance of encouraging students to assume a very active responsibility for their own learning. My approach to learning facilitates their success in making sound strategic choices, reflect on their learning processes, collaborate with their peers, and fully participate in the dynamic learning experience. It is also important to me that they know what we are learning, why we are learning it, and how it applies to the world beyond the classroom.My favorite subjects to tutor are Discrete Mathematics, Algebra, Statistics and Calculus. I am generally available for tutoring year-round Monday through Saturday, from 10 AM - 6 PM Central, but I am flexible if necessary.

With over 10 years’ experience as an educator I have worked with a diversity of audiences focusing on high school and college students. While working on my undergraduate degree in Biology at Northern Illinois University I started tutoring chemistry, biology, and math. This tutoring experience sparked my passion for teaching. After graduating I started working toward a Master of Science in Teaching at Portland State University. While in graduate school I tutored math and chemistry and was a teaching assistant for undergraduate science courses. Soon after graduating I started working at a local private college teaching math, environmental science, and ecology. Now over 6 years later I still love teaching student’s math and science. My favorite subject to tutor is math because students often struggle with this subject. It is very rewarding to help students overcome their math struggles and succeed in math. My tutoring style includes the following three components, 1) break up the material into small digestible pieces, 2) explain difficult concepts clearly and enthusiastically, and 3) work together as a team to make a plan to succeed. In my free time I spend exploring the woods hiking and canoeing our waterways. I love learning about animals and actually worked at a zoo working with monkeys and elephants.

My love for the English language began at an early age. As a child, I learned to read by age five and voraciously devoured Greek and Roman mythology, and European history. When I entered college, I had the tremendous privilege of studying Literature and Creative Writing at University of Montana, via their English program with so many talented writers and poets that it was known as "Paris of the West." My background in Creative Writing has stood me in excellent stead throughout my career, and assisted me with reports, presentations, editing, and projects of many kinds. I love the color and nuances of English and delight in bringing this to my students.

No one is a bad writer. I believe that passionately. They just need practice and guidance from a more experienced writer to build a practical set of writing skills.I have been writing for 20 years. My poem "Hollow Words" was published in the 2007 summer edition of Caesura, the journal for the Poetry Center San Jos. That same year my short story "Static Night" won the Dawson Prize from the PEN American Center. In 2010, my screen play "A War for the City in the Sea" was a quarter finalist in the Blue Cat Screenplay Competition.My passion for all things writing led to my founding of Gamin Publications. It is an independent publishing company that is rapidly becoming a platform for emerging and experimental authors. Currently I am working with World Fantasy Award winner Scott Nicolay to create an online magazine focused on experimental fiction, especially from indigenous authors.I am an active member of the Portland writing community. I am a co-founder of The Hour That Stretches spoken word event. The series' primary focus is to promote writing, in all its forms. This has resulted in strange pairings like icon William F. Nolan featured alongside 19 year old feminist poet Anna Suarez. The creation of a space that encourages interracial and inter-generational writing is an overwhelming source of pride.I am currently a Writing tutor at Clackamas Community College. I have worked as an adjunct in the Art program at Clackamas Community College. My primary focus was introduction to drawing, but I have taught gallery management classes and sequential art workshops. I have also taught college experience workshops for The Clackamas Middle College, a charter school. In every case I worked with Senior Faculty member David Andersen to create curriculum, grading rubrics, syllabi, etc.

I'm a recent computer science graduate trying to get a solid job in the software field. I have a strong understanding of CS fundamentals, full-stack development, algorithms, discrete math, calc. I am confident I can help you improve your level of Spanish whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced student.When I began learning Spanish about twelve years ago, it was a very challenging and frustrating experience. I felt like I was the slowest student in class, and even though I spent a lot of time studying, some things just did not make sense to me. I felt like I would never be able to become fluent and have a comprehensible conversation with a native speaker. Now, I have enjoyed being completely fluent in Spanish for several years, and I have even had a few native speakers confuse me for a fellow native Spanish speaker.I have recently began a career as a Spanish instructor for first and second year university students, and I have been tutoring Spanish students off and on for the last seven years. While I love teaching in the classroom, I also love the one-on-one experience of being able to personalize the content to an individual's needs and move at the student's own pace. I have taught high school social studies and Spanish language in Los Angeles and Niwot, Colorado, Boulder County. I successfully teamed with an English and art instructor in LA to teach an art centered thematic curriculum that was underwritten by The Getty Center. While teaching I won two National Endowment of the Humanities summer teacher grants to study at Georgetown University and the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain.I began learning Spanish while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Choluteca, Honduras. I have studied in Mexico and Spain as well as completing a BA in Spanish at Portland State. I am also a professional chef having trained at the California Culinary Academy(now Cordon Bleu) in SFO.
