I'm passionate about education and History! After 29 years with the US Air Force, I took a leap of faith three years ago and left government service to teach at the Community College level. Every day I step foot in a classroom it is reinforcement of that decision. I am able to continue to serve just in a different way. I believe that every student has a desire to excel, and that it is my mission to help them find that spark that leads to success and hopefully sparks a lifelong love of History!

I earned my bachelor's degree in Political Science with the minor in Philosophy from Arizona State University and my Master of Arts in Global History from American Military University. My professional experience includes serving as a commissioned Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy and teaching English as a foreign language both at home and abroad. I recently moved to the Las Vegas metro area where I am starting a post-baccalaureate degree in secondary education to teach social sciences. I have traveled extensively for academic, professional, and personal purposes, visiting over 40 countries and living in a dozen different places. I have advanced proficiency in Spanish and basic skills in several other foreign languages.I have tutored 1 on 1 in Spanish and taught English as a foreign language both in the classroom and in private lessons. While involved with a PhD program in International Politics, I worked as a Teaching Associate and mentored students, graded essays and exams, and help run in-person and online courses. I have a deep-seated passion for learning which I try to impart to my students. I believe that the ideal tutor must possess subject-mastery, yet also be lively, enthusiastic, and engaging. The best teachers I have had were the ones who were able to break down complex subject-matter into easy to understand terms, concepts, and rules. I try to carry on this legacy in tutoring, encouraging interest in the material while driving students to progress. I know what it takes to thrive in the academic world and am happy to share my keys to success! When I'm not sitting around with my nose in a book I enjoy traveling and exploring new places. I love running, hiking, checking out new movies, good food, all things sci-fi, spirituality, joking around with friends, and trying new things! I'm also a huge fan of concerts and heavy and electronic music.

Plant biology has been my passion since for as long as I can remember. Spending a year of my childhood on a farm, I was able to spend time in TN forests, and the variety of different plant life always fascinated me. Eventually I would grow up to translate this fascination into an interest in genetics: what makes these structures work? Why do we not know everything about genetics when this field is integral to the process of every living thing? The answers are quite complicated. My aim as a tutor is to incite a curiosity in students as well as to sharpen critical thinking skills when examining basic and complex science subjects. It isn't easy navigating the biological and genetic processes behind living structures, in fact, even scientists admit that we are far from "having everything figured out", but I hope to assist students make a transition into scientific thinking and understanding.

My teaching philosophy is to promote continuous learning of students by engaging, encouraging, and motivating each student to individually meet their educational needs. As a lifelong learner, I live everyday believing that there is nothing new under the sun, but there are many unknown recipes of life. My desire as a teacher is to hone the minds of learners to encourage continuous learning. As a continuous learner, I expect to learn from other learners to build my toolbox with newness. I speak of newness as an agent for change within the education community. Being a continuous learner shepherds growth in all areas of life, both professionally and personally. My approach to teaching is effective teaching will promote effective learning. The focus of teaching is to grow the learner and create an open learning environment, which promotes self-esteem and self-confidence. An open learning environment helps to develop communication skills, critical thinking skills, collaborating, and newness of the mind. I believe there are seven tenets of learning: Desire, Time, Focus, Understanding, Respect, Trust , and Experience. Tenets of learning 1. Desire to learn newness. This newness includes new perspectives, new insights, new tools, new knowledge, new ideas, new concepts, new ways of thinking, new understandings, new information, new thoughts, and new environment. 2. Time should be dedicated to learning. The student must invest time into learning, reading, researching, and processing the newness. Learning occurs over a period of time. During this time, the learner reflects on what they have learned, their experiences, and explores what they have learned through some type of action, and uses the learned lessons when applicable. 3. Focus on what is being taught or learned. The focus of the learner must be undivided and concentrated to understand all elements of the lesson. Focus is especially important, so that every aspect of what is being taught is captured. If the focus is not received effectively, any missing elements may cause a lack in understanding. 4. Understanding what is being taught: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Each of these elements of the process must be adhered to. 5. Respect of every learner and their opinions. Learn to collaborate and communicate effectively. Respect of other learners does not mean that you have the same thoughts, opinions, ideas, or understandings, but that you respect others and understand they can only speak from their life learned experiences and endeavors. 6. Trust yourself as a learner. Never be afraid to ask questions or seek advice. 7. Understanding that every individual's experience is different, and they can only give their opinions based on their experience. Just as the learner does not need approval of their thoughts and ideas, no one needs your approval of their own thoughts and ideas. If we all thought alike or there was one answer to every question, there would be no need for continuous learning. Remember, there is nothing new under the sun. I believe that the strongest student and teacher relationship is developed by respecting each other as individuals first and then as student or teacher. Learning together is a recipe for progress. When we come together as one to share our thoughts and ideas, we form a more perfect union as student and teacher. Each of the following tenets are demanded of the student and teacher relationship, for effective learning to occur. o Develop the ability to think critically. o Empower the voice of learners. o Increase the confidence in communication of thoughts and ideas. o Foster the love of lifelong learning. o Promote continuously learning, sharing ideas, and knowledge. As a teacher, I will engage every student, promoting their voices, and respecting their opinions to form a learning partnership.

As a teacher, I find fulfillment in helping students achieve. That "light bulb moment," when a student understands a concept, is so satisfying. Although I help students every day in the classroom, I know that some need that extra help or motivation outside of class to be successful and I am happy to provide that.I am a certified teacher and former journalist. I currently teach dual credit U.S. History and AP World History as well as writing skills. For the past several years, 100% of my students have passed the US History STAAR test. Last year, 73% passed at mastery level.I also have taught World Geography and World Cultures. My journalism background has provided me with strong writing and editing skills that I share with students to increase their abilities. It also has enabled me to help students make connections with historical themes through current events.
