I'm Lorenzo! I'm a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania studying engineering and education. Teaching has been a lifelong passion and in school I am a part of multiple tutoring organizations in the Philadelphia area. I am passionate about math and science (especially computer science), as they form a basis of thinking that can help in every other subject. I also thoroughly enjoy teaching Writing, English, and History because their applications are so useful in the real world. Other than my abilities, I bring positive energy and attitude that is great for any student.

I have a bachelor's degree in Business Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (GPA 4.0) and previously graduated from The Lawrenceville School cum laude. Hi - I'm Peter. I've always had a preference for math and science, which explains my undergrad choice in engineering. I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I received my MBA (Industrial Management) from the Wharton Graduate Division at U. of Pa. My primary work experience prior to teaching was in business planning and finance (more math). I started teaching because I enjoyed helping students at Baruch College prep for graduate school entrance exams (GMAT, LSAT, GRE). Later on, I aided community college students to break through their difficulties in basic math, algebra, quantitative literacy and statistics/probability (remedial math courses). Many of these students were the first in their families to attend college. I've been teaching math for 25+ years, both in a classroom setting and, more recently, on-line. I prefer to use a whiteboard and other visuals to present the problems and explain the methodology and steps that lead to the solution. If you are my student I would encourage you to first think through the problem and work it through on your own whenever possible, as it helps to foster self-confidence. Then I can step in and assist where I can to guide you to the correct solution. I like to put myself in my student's place in order to understand what hurdle(s) they need to overcome to solve the math question. I can explain approaches to the solution in several ways until it makes sense to you. I am available pretty much during the week or on weekends from late morning until early evenings and can make exceptions when necessary. I would be happy to hold an initial exploratory session at no charge just so we can get to know each other and agree on what we can accomplish together.

I received my PhD in mathematics from Drexel University in 2019. I really enjoyed teaching as a graduate student, and working as a tutor here seems like a nice way to get back into it. Before graduate school, I went to Johns Hopkins. I started out as a "chemical and biomolecular engineering" major, but then ended up switching to a double major in math and electrical engineering. I graduated with a BA in math and MS in electrical engineering. From there, I went to Drexel University to write and defend my dissertation in mathematics, which was about two unsolved problems in linear algebra. While in Johns Hopkins and Drexel University, I ended up teaching a lot of math and a bit of science not only as a tutor, but also as a teaching assistant and as a primary instructor. Since then, I've been working as a mathematician; I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Free University of Brussels for one year, and then as a research scientist at the Air Force Research Lab in Dayton, Ohio for two years. It's been a rewarding career, but I have missed teaching. When it comes to teaching, I try my best to take a flexible approach and meet students where they are. I am a big believer in the power of intuition and curiosity, so I try to teach in a way that nurtures both. I find that it is important not only to know how to get from problem statement to solution, but also to have some understanding of why the pieces fit together the way they do. Besides math and teaching, I enjoy singing, playing piano, playing online chess, and doing the New York Times crossword (and other word games). Lately, I've been trying to get back into running and yoga.

I am passionate about the broad implications and applications of the Science, Math, and Engineering in our daily lives - and enjoy teaching them to my own kids. Towards this end, I also want to leverage my 20+ years in graduate and post-doctoral science/engineering research, past undergraduate level teaching/tutoring experience in physics, math, geophysics, and scientific computation, along with 10+ years of scientific programming & system administration experience towards STEM tutoring/mentoring at school to college level.

From my experience teaching math to a range of students, from middle school through college, I know that it does not come easily to everyone. However, I firmly believe that everyone has the capability for mathematical reasoning. Everyone has their own strengths and challenges, and my job as a tutor begins with identifying these. I like to have students work through problems while I guide them and make suggestions, so that I can get a sense of what they understand and what they don't. Then we can build on their knowledge and break down the challenging parts of the problem into smaller, more manageable chunks. I hold a bachelor's degree from UChicago and a doctorate from MIT, both in mathematics. I am available to tutor Latin, physics, and all levels of math. Outside of academics, I am an avid tournament chess player, and I enjoy running and cycling.

I started peer tutoring in high school, staying after school to help fellow students with AP Chemistry content before major exams and quizzes. I currently tutor in math (up to AP Calculus BC/Calculus II), chemistry, physics, biology and offer test prep for the SAT and several SAT Subject tests. However my favorite subjects to tutor involve chemistry, due to the various real world examples that make the subject more comprehensive and ultimately enjoyable for students. My hobbies and interests include dancing, solving crossword puzzles, binging Netflix TV shows and hiking.

I love to teach. I love young minds and fresh brains. Those are just like clean sheets of papers I can draw anything I like. I really like to help young people to achieve their full capacities with my long experience of teaching. I am very patient and good at explaining complex concepts in simple terms.
