Pawtucket, RI Physics tutoring
The student and I worked on angular motion. She seems to understand the general concepts but has difficulty working out the specifics of the problems. We also went over converting units. I left her with some topics to review on her own. I think if she closely reads the chapters she will grasp the content.

Today we reviewed for the student's physics test tomorrow covering momentum. We worked through example problems from her study guide. Specifically, we worked through how to setup the problems by determining which equation to use, elastic or inelastic. She has become very good at writing down her known and unknown variables to set up the work. We then worked a bit on the algebra with some of the tougher problems but she was able to work through the majority of the work independently and I helped a bit keeping track of positive and negative signs. Finally, we also related momentum with kinetic energy and keeping track of conservation of kinetic energy in one example as well. Overall, she understands the concepts well and is ready for her test.

The student and I reviewed ch. 5 in her textbook to prepare for her midterm coming up this Sunday. She is understanding all the math and algebra needed to solve the problems but is struggling setting the problems up. We focused on taking important information in the word problems and drawing free body diagrams correctly. We then practiced solving for the net force of a problem.

We went over work-energy theorem concepts and conservation of energy; so this involved studying problems with changes in potential and kinetic energy and how the overall energy state had to be conserved. Overall, the student does appear to have a good understanding of these topics, and I expect him to do well on his test.

We reviewed for the student's next exam by going over examples from several topics: conservation of linear momentum in two dimensions, conservation or rotational motion, work-kinetic energy theorem, torque, and conservation of energy. She had some trouble recognizing the conservation of rotational momentum problem, so we discussed how she should look through word problems in her textbook from each chapter to get ideas of how she should approach different problems. Once we got the problems started, she was able to complete them on her own.
