Hey! My name is Orne Akter and I am an undergraduate student at Harvard College under the majors of Neuroscience and Psychology! After 3 years of teaching Geometry and Algebra at my high school, I have picked up a passion for teaching students like myself! I can teach math (geometry, Algebra I/II, SAT math), English (SAT English, AP Lit/Lang, and general English courses). As I have just gotten through the college processes myself, I can also give deep insight into how the process works, strategies and tips I used to get into Harvard, and essay writing tips!

I am attending the University of Pennsylvania where I am majoring in Bioengineering on the premed track, with my goal after graduation to become an orthopedic surgeon. My passion for tutoring stems from a genuine love for helping people discover their strengths and succeed in their learning journey, much like guiding a friend through a challenging but rewarding adventure. I also walk/jog 50-plus miles a week, do yoga, and exercise my critical thinking skills regularly. My students since 1979 have ranged from middle school urban and rural to university level juniors and seniors. While I spent almost ten years teaching higher ed. English Composition, Literature, and Research, the majority of my teaching time was in college preparatory curricula. I make a room comfortable when I come in but if it needs energized, I energize it.

I served as a teaching assistant for basic Mathematics and Statistics courses when I was completing my Masters degree at Stony Brook University. I received my Bachelors degree from Columbia University, where I also served as a tutor. I have also tutored countless number of CUNY students studying to pass the CUNY Assessment test in Math. Each student is unique, and I understand that the techniques and style I use is tailored directly towards the needs of the student. I am a very good listener, and I try my best to make my students very comfortable at all times. I am a PhD student at UT Southwestern Medical Center. I have received my Master's in Biotechnology at Johns Hopkins University and my Bachelor's in Biochemistry at Southern Methodist University. I've tutored middle school, high school, and college students in math (Algebra I & II, Geometry, Calculus I-II) and science (Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry). I have the most experience with and enjoy teaching Algebra I & II and Chemistry though. I grew up as a athlete myself (figure skater) and so am aware of the strenuous schedule student athletes have and work to be as flexible as I can with my own schedule so that I can accommodate these students.

During my summers in college, I worked with EducationUSA Nairobi, an advising center for Kenyan students who wish to pursue higher education in the US. When I worked for them, I tutored high school graduates on SAT stuff and also helped them write better personal statements. After graduating from Duke last year, I started tutoring high school students in my neighborhood. I mainly taught math subjects such as Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Basic Math and Problem Solving but I'm well versed in Reading and Writing subjects as well.
