I've been a mathematician and tutor for about 15 years. I have also taught mathematics at the college level for the past 7 years. My research touches on the interactions between math and theoretical computer science, as well as number theory (largely the study of prime numbers). I've taught courses ranging from basic arithmetic up through linear algebra and multivariable calculus. The second most exciting thing about mathematics is that moment when something totally opaque and confusing suddenly solidifies into crystal clarity. While studying as a graduate student, I had the opportunity to manage an undergraduate tutoring center for mathematics and science students, and I also designed and facilitated training workshops for middle and high school math teachers who were preparing to enact the Common Core State Standards. I am working towards a Bachelor of Science with a focus on neuroscience as I love biology, psychology, and the brain. However, I have tutored many students during my middle school and high school career in classes and in libraries. Outside of the classroom, I was the committee chair of the National Honor Society Tutoring Committee at my high school, and I primarily focused on high school math and science-related subjects since they were the most interesting to me. Math was once a subject I dreaded on taking having this pre-conceptual thought since high school that I was bad at it, I put it off as long as possible in college. After taking some really hard classes like organic chemistry I had learned that if you go into a class thinking your bad at, that attitude will ultimately reflect on your grade. So there I was going into intermediate algebra with a changed mindset and the grade highly reflected that. Ever since that I have enjoyed math classes. Math is a difficult subject even for me moving up the ladder. Understanding concepts takes time, a lot of time and it can be frustrating. I know the struggle. I have been helping classmates from the beginning of my math career up to now. Given the opportunity to be a supplemental instructor for a college algebra class (the highest dropped class at ACC) it has really made me appreciate spreading the knowledge. Helping students go from D's and C's to A's and B's. The feeling of being able to help someone with a topic I once had difficulty with is indescribable. I have always found my science courses to be the most challenging and rewarding courses that I've taken. The main reason why I have loved these courses has been because of the terrific teachers and professors that I have been fortunate enough to have. In high school, I tutored my peers at the Math and Science Center, and I always tried to personally connect with each student in a different way. In the STEM courses, the concepts can be very challenging and complex. My teaching philosophy is to simplify these concepts by relating them to every-day experiences. I've found that when students can understand these concepts through real life examples and applications, they become much easier to understand. Science can be hard, there are a lot of details that can make students (and myself!) feel overwhelmed. However, there are fundamental principles that are at the core of each field in STEM. My mission is to instill these fundamental principles in my students, so that when they move on in their academic and professional careers, they can use these principles to help them understand any concept.
