Susan: Huntley tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a graduate of Clark Atlanta University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Curriculum often focused on childhood cognitive development, short and long-term memory, and imagination and reasoning. Course subjects also included how environment and up-bringing can influence a child's imagination and problem-solving abilities.
During college, I served as a volunteer counselor for a local youth home as well as for a local church in Atlanta, Georgia. In this role, I counseled socially challenged youth between the ages of five and fifteen. We addressed issues related to bullying and resolving verbal and/or physical altercations. We also discussed healthy coping skills and positive life management strategies. Additionally, I spent several years as a Social Worker at a United Way governing agency that provided health and wellness services for children and families. The services offered included foster care, adoption, counseling, and mentoring.
I am most passionate about encouraging and helping students develop an enjoyment for reading and improving literacy. In my own experience, my love for reading was instrumental in helping me advance at two reading levels ahead of my peers. To this day I am still a voracious reader. I also believe that reading can strengthen writing ability, which is another subject that I would like to tutor.
I believe that my work experience and studies in youth development will allow me to help students achieve academic success.
