How can Phonics tutoring help you?

Phonics is the all-important link between the sounds of language and the way those sounds appear on the page. Being able to decode that relationship opens the doors to a world of reading skills and may set your child on a path to reading confidence. Unfortunately, some teachers spend more time teaching children sight words instead of giving them the skills to handle new words independently.

Too many children, used to memorizing sight words in class, end up guessing at new words rather than trying to sound them out. The right tutor may try to help your child understand initial and final consonant blends, blending, and varying vowel lengths. In no time, your child may go from making wild guesses to carefully sounding out new words. Contact Varsity Tutors' educational directors for help connecting with phonics tutors near Atlanta, GA.

Atlanta, GA Phonics tutoring
The student took the placement test this past Saturday, and we discussed how she thought she did. She said that it was kind of hard, but not impossible, which is a good sign. She wrote a practice essay, and then we went through a math section since she said that she was confused by the geometry on the test. She is starting to improve in reading comprehension as well.

We reviewed polynomial long division and synthetic division. Student is proficient in synthetic division but needed a little guidance with long division and using Pascal's Triangle to expand polynomials. She has an exam on Monday, so I will meet with her on Sunday to prepare her. I asked that she collects her old test to see that we prepare properly for her next exam.

We looked through and organized all of his school binders and talked about the importance of organization.  We organized all of his papers by textual material, class work, and old tests/quizzes. Then we talked about RNA and protein synthesis for his science class and the value of slowly going through his textbook a few lines at a time when he knows he is having a hard time understanding a particular section.  The student definitely seems to appreciate being organized and methodical with his schoolwork, and he is very pleasantly cooperative with what I ask him to do.

We quickly went through some physics problems involving work, energy conservation, and losses to show the student the process for solving them. We then went to algebra, solving and verifying solutions for equations with a distributed variable. She picked up quickly on how these solutions work, and did very well finding them. We talked briefly about how to finish a review sheet involving all of the concepts covered that day and several others.

Continued to work on practice tests from both the books.  I will focus exclusively on the verbal and reading sections because the student is scoring much higher on the math section.  She doesn't know half of the words in the vocabulary section, so I was teaching her the meanings of prefixes, suffixes, and stem words.  I asked her to complete a practice test for homework, so that we would have material to review for the next tutoring session.

Atlanta, GA Phonics tutoring
Today we practiced primarily vocabulary and reading comprehension and we finished with a mathematics section out of the student's college prep book. He is doing fairly well at reading comprehension questions but is challenged a little more by sentence completion questions though he is still performing relatively well on those sections too.
