I'm Lorenzo! I'm a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania studying engineering and education. Teaching has been a lifelong passion and in school I am a part of multiple tutoring organizations in the Philadelphia area. I am passionate about math and science (especially computer science), as they form a basis of thinking that can help in every other subject. I also thoroughly enjoy teaching Writing, English, and History because their applications are so useful in the real world. Hello parents and future students! I've been tutoring for more than six years now and have tons of experience working with learners of all ages. My teaching focuses on building confidence and encouraging vulnerability- we all make mistakes and tutoring helps us fix them! As for some background on myself, I'm a recent graduate of the University of Florida with a BS in Microbiology and Cell Science as well as two minors, one in history and one in Spanish. I'm currently pursuing an MS in Biomedical Sciences from Vanderbilt University before attending medical school in the future. I'm a student at Yale University majoring in both Economics and Global Affairs. Over the past 4 years, I am lucky to have worked with students of all ages and helped them reach their full potential. My teaching philosophy centers on creating a safe, welcoming environment where students can learn at their own pace. Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time outside and enjoying good food with family and friends.

My love affair with language began in 8th grade when, as I read short stories, I saw how word-crafting could issue in what I call 3-D thinking. Good writing breathes sharp life into ideas, fosters synergy across them while creating new thought patterns for writer and reader. Throughout my 25 years of teaching and tutoring college students at an Ivy League university and at other local institutions guiding them through class essays, research projects, honors and masters theses, and graduate school personal statements--I always found joy in helping students discover what they wanted to sayand to express themselves coherently and persuasively. I hold a B.A. in English from Fordham University summa cum laude and in 1998 I earned a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. In the course of completing my doctoral project after a long pause from grad school to raise my son, I cultivated the ability, and empathy, to look at academic challenges resourcefully from both sides of the desk. Given that my research on Hamlet was highly interdisciplinary-- joyous and original--I have carried that intellectual exhilaration into all my work as a lecturer, writing specialist, tutor, academic advisor and administrator, always urging students to seek out more conceptual connections and to write as integratively as possible. Currently I am working part-time by choice, but my staunch resolve that the pen is mightier than the sword remains intact and never fails to excite me. I want to share my excitement, expertise, and love of writing with you--and am ready to motivate you and empower you, as I have done so for numerous students, to write your best thinking!

After serving as an intelligence officer in the Air Force for seven years, I completed a doctoral program in American Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill. Since then, I have edited a literary journal, managed a research center, and published several peer-reviewed articles on American autobiography, fiction, and poetry. I live with my wife and three daughters in Durham, North Carolina.

I'm a current PhD student in the history department at Georgetown University who is also an experienced instructor with Varsity Tutors. As a recipient of several degrees, the most recent being a BA in history from Hillsdale College and a MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from Stanford University, I have long sought to make teaching my profession. Meanwhile, as a volunteer grade school teacher and a tutor with this company, I have many years' experience helping students reach their full potential. I am capable of teaching students in many subjects, including reading, mathematics, test prep, Latin, and especially writing, history, and literature. In practice, I am comfortable adapting to different learning styles and specific student preferences. Outside of my academic and career endeavors, I enjoy cooking, reading, and listening to and making music.

As part of my doctoral work, I completed all coursework for a Ph.D. minor in Experimental Statistics. I have more than 20 years of experience conducting research and teaching biology. I have worked as a research biologist with the US Forest Service and US Geological Survey and as a biology professor at the University of Puerto Rico and Eastern Kentucky University. For the past 8 years, I have taught biology at a public high school in Mississippi as well as at two local community colleges. I am passionate about biology, in particular ecology, environmental science and botany. As a teacher and tutor, I always focus on creating an environment that is student-centered and promotes student success. I feel that a solid background in science is essential for success in many careers, and I enjoy working with students to help them achieve their goals. In my free time, I like to spend time outside hiking, canoeing, and birdwatching.
