Having travelled to both Mexico and Argentina for full-time volunteer opportunities, I've developed a passion for both the Spanish language and forming connections with other people across cultures. As it has been a significant source of happiness and purpose in my own life, I strongly believe that everyone that wants to should have the opportunity to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from learning another language. I am also passionate about telling stories through music as a singer-songwriter, which I have been studying as a Commercial Music major for two years. These studies have included cello and orchestral experiences as well as working in a recording studio. All have taught me how to express myself creatively through the combination of musical and writing skills. I enjoy expressing myself through various forms of art and language. I speak Spanish and have a strong passion for music, particularly singing and playing the cello. Songwriting allows me to blend emotion and melody in a personal and meaningful way. Writing empowers you. I know that can be hard to believe. Most assignments can feel arbitrary, many classes pretend that composition is detached from purpose or audience, and written work can feel like jumping through hoops. As a result, our current approach to composition often teaches students the rules while also teaching them to hate writing.I believe a better path is possible. My focus is teaching students to master the technical aspect of writing (especially for academic assignments), learn to love the process of composition, and understand how writing well will help them reach their own goals. Everyone has a voice, and my goal is to help students find that voice and understand how the craft of writing can help them share it.I believe in engaged learning practices, and had the opportunity to work with Dr. Anton Tolman to write a book on this topic. My work as a TA, creative writing community leader, and tutor have given me extensive experience in working with students one on one to craft truly excellent essays. That said, I keep the ball in the student's court. It's never enough to help students get through assignments. Instead, it is my goal to help them gain all the tools they need to tackle the work on their own in the future.
