Hey I'm Uchenna! I'm from Beltsville, MD and I currently am taking a year off between my third and fourth years at the University of Michigan Medical School to do biomedical research at the NIH. I also graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Psychology. I have quite a few years of tutoring under my belt as I tutored for about 3 years when I was at UMBC. And although I had no formal tutoring positions in medical school, my classmates and I constantly taught each other our material and various concepts. I love tutoring because I know trying to be successful in your coursework can be difficult and when you can help someone throughout that journey, it truly is beneficial for both tutee and tutor seeing the mutual satisfaction in that person's progress.I have always been fairly good at math and this was no different on the SATs. Through hard work and preparation, the SAT math section proved to be my best individual score with a 760. I also took the Math Subject Test and did well on that as well. I have an extensive background in mathematics from algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus from the elementary up to college-level difficulty and I make it my goal to help students understand what sometimes does feel like another language of numbers.Throughout my entire life I have always been passionate about science. It is what eventually led me into pursuing a Biochemistry degree in college and ultimately the field of medicine. I have always understood scientific subjects well and naturally, it helped me tutor a variety of subjects (chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, physics, etc.) in high school and college. I believe that your progress in science courses depends on learning fundamental concepts and constantly building on them which is something I always strive to do and work with tutees on.Please don't hesitate to reach out! I would love to help you in whatever STEM or test prep class that I can to help you reach your goals. I will do my best to respond promptly as well. Looking forward to working with you!

As a NYC Public School teacher for 6 years, and as a private tutor in South Korea, I have experience instructing elementary, middle school, and high school students, as well as adults, to reach their academic goals. Additionally, I have taught test preparation for the SAT, PSAT, SHSAT, NYS ELA Regents, NYSESLAT exams, and more.I specialize in increasing the literacy skills of all learners through vocabulary building, step-by-step approaches and inquiry. I use direct teaching, video, audio, PowerPoints, and even props to demonstrate concepts. I am excellent at helping students to organize their ideas for essays and to deliver clear arguments to defend any position. If you are looking to create and edit an essay (college application, English essay, science report, etc.), to make an oral presentation, or if you just need some useful writing advice, I will be happy to assist you in reaching your goals!
I am a graduate from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) with a degree in Biology. I am currently pursuing my Doctoral of Dental Medicine degree from Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). During my time at UMBC, I served as a teaching assistant in chemistry and biology classes ranging from introductory biology to more advanced courses that I had previously taken. I also served as a tutor in my time at UMBC a wide variety of subjects in the science categories. In my time at HSDM, I have served as a tutor for Mission Crimson, where I was paired one-on-one with a 5th grader whom I helped with reading, math, and English skills in preparation for a standardized exam. I enjoy all subjects that I tutor, and I am very passionate about teaching and helping others think critically about ways to approach problems. I am passionate about helping others improve their performance, I am interested in strategies the tutee has previously used, and I am interested in other strategies the tutee is willing to try. In my spare time I enjoy listening to music, bird watching, and hiking with friends.
Hi everyone! My name is Kate, and I have been teaching and tutoring for about 30 years. I have taught preschool through college level students. I enjoy working with students of all ages to help them improve their skills and achieve their goals. I especially enjoy making reading and math a little less mysterious for my students. When I am not teaching, I love reading, camping, hiking, and cooking.
Hey there, I'm Iskandar! I'm a pre-medical post-baccalaureate student, entering my last year of coursework before medical school, and have a very strong academic background in biology, chemistry, and human anatomy. On top of my classwork experience, I also have over a year of biology research experience, specializing in molecular biology and neuroscience. My main areas of academic and professional interest are in medicine - especially emergency medicine - as well as clinical and biomedical research. I'm an extroverted and adaptable person, and often use analogies in my explanations, so I aim to fill in any knowledge gaps by showing things from another angle. My first step is to know what you understand well and what you're struggling with, so that we can work on the weak spots without rehashing things that you're already comfortable with.
I've been tutoring in Florida for over 15 years in most subjects biological, and the increases in my students' test scores while I tutored them is validation of my effectiveness as a tutor. Teaching can be quite fun and rewarding, especially when you see improvement in the students' understanding of the course material. Let me show you how I can get you better grades, and have an enjoyable experience doing it!

Since high school, Ive had a great passion for science, particularly in biology and chemistry. As a senior, I interned at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, MD. I enjoyed learning the techniques and developed problem solving skills. This led me to pursuing my BS in Biological Sciences at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. While there, my professors trained us how to process problems and come to answers using critical thinking skills. We were taught to not simply memorize answers, but to understand them. This way of analyzing and learning science is what drives my approach to teaching. I try and share my passion with other students and guide them through more efficient ways of learning. I hope that by helping them analyze problems and understand solutions, they too will develop a passion for the topics. In addition to helping students master their material, I also prioritize general encouragement. Its important to me to build a relationship with the student and know where their interests lay. I want to be able to talk to them about their goals and visions for their future, and be able to share with them what my experiences have taught me. Education is so important, and I believe that by constant positive words of encouragement, students will sustain the desire to move forward with their schooling and earn their degrees with pride.
I am deeply passionate about growth. Tutoring students for algebra and geometry is something I really look forward to. I have had success as a business statistics and calculus tutor in the past - when I was a student in college. Inculcating a love for math in my students is an ideal I strive for. Eradicating fear of math, in students, is a goal I have and am confident that I will be able to achieve that.
I am a chemist currently obtaining my PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I obtained two Bachelors of Science at the University of New Haven in Chemistry and Forensic Science, during which time I worked as an undergraduate peer tutor. I am passionate about helping students expand their chemistry knowledge and develop the logical skills which are vital as future members of the scientific community. I am currently tutoring general and organic chemistry.

They've successfully navigated the same challenging subjects and understand the specific expectations of UMBC's programs, whether in engineering, sciences, mathematics, or other disciplines. This firsthand experience means they can offer practical insights into study strategies that actually work for UMBC-level material.
An alumnus or alumna from UMBC understands the university's culture, teaching style, and assessment methods in ways that external tutors simply cannot. They can help you prepare for specific exam formats, navigate difficult topics that commonly trip up UMBC students, and connect abstract concepts to real applications you'll encounter in your major. This shared institutional knowledge accelerates your progress and builds confidence.
Tutors from UMBC are particularly strong in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, and biology—areas where the university is known for its rigorous programs and research opportunities. However, UMBC alumni span many disciplines, so you can also connect with tutors in business, economics, information systems, and humanities subjects. When you reach out, we can match you with someone who has direct experience in your specific course or major.
Your first session is focused on understanding your current level, identifying specific challenges, and creating a personalized plan. A UMBC tutor will likely ask about your major, which courses are most difficult, and what study strategies you've already tried. From there, you'll work together to develop a targeted approach that builds on what works and addresses gaps—all informed by their own experience succeeding at UMBC.
Yes. UMBC tutors have taken the same exams and understand the difficulty level and question styles you'll encounter. They can help you prioritize which topics to focus on, practice problem-solving under exam conditions, and develop test-taking strategies specific to UMBC professors' expectations. Many students find this targeted exam prep significantly reduces anxiety and improves performance.
Absolutely. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors based on your needs, including their academic background and major. We'll take your specific courses, subjects, and goals into account and match you with a qualified tutor who has the right background and expertise. The process is straightforward—we handle the matching so you can focus on your studies.
Beyond grades, a UMBC tutor can help you develop deeper understanding of your field, build confidence in challenging material, and learn study habits that will serve you throughout your academic career and beyond.
