As a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica, I spent two and a half years teaching students of all ages how to get and remain interested in learning. My experience working in an elementary and high school taught me that every student is different and there is no better way to engage a student than to be able to study with them one on one. Finding out their learning styles, and mutually developing an effective learning strategy helps both the student and myself succeed in achieving the goals of the student. I have experience tutoring students from young elementary children to adults with very little knowledge of the subject. I have the personal benefit of going from knowing very little Spanish, to becoming fluent, because I spoke Spanish everyday for two years with people who were native speakers. I know the methods it takes to effectively learn Spanish in a way that will make it a second language rather than just memorizing vocabulary and conjugations. I look forward to working with students of all types and will work hard to achieve the goals set by the student.

I am currently a graduate student, a Masters of Public Health candidate at Temple University concentrating in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. I have nearly ten years experience as an educator and a contagious passion and enthusiasm for teaching and learning. I am attuned to my students needs and seek to make the learning process as enjoyable and memorable as possible. What makes me a great tutor? I am as enthusiastic of a teacher as I am a student. I have been teaching and/or tutoring in some capacity since my first job at age 15. I have tutored in the areas of math, English (vocabulary and grammar), science, and social studies. As an undergrad, and a graduate, student I have often been called upon to lead study groups in various subjects. My most notable study group was for an undergrad Epidemiology class, where I created thorough and in-depth practice exams. Today, I facilitate a small writer circle/workshop for my friends every Saturday morning. I have just recently finished a 2.5 year position at The University of Pennsylvania;s Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative where I taught nutrition and wellness, as well as some classroom gardening. I am most at home with students and am very excited by watching the light-bulb finally go off. I am a great tutor because I genuinely love to teach.

To start, I am a mom and I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy biking (bicycles), cooking new meals, scrap booking and going out to lunch or dinner with my friends. I also advocate for children who are not receiving the proper services in the school system. I am passionate about children receiving what they need to be successful from the school system. Academically, I have earned three master degrees over the years. One is in business and the other two are in the field of psychology; School Psychology and Educational Psychology. I have spent a number of years working in the public school system as a school psychologist. I thoroughly enjoy working with children to help them achieve a level of success with their academics. I like to use a multi-model approach to tutoring which includes your typical paper and pencil work, computer based learning tools, hands on strategies and discussion based learning. I believe for a student to remain engaged and active in their own learning they have to enjoy it to some degree. The teaching has to be interesting, engaging and have some level of fun tied to it. The teacher/tutor needs to know their student(s) and what their learning styles are in order to create the most effective strategies. I believe a reward system is very helpful for students who have a very low level of motivation to do their school work. It can be a very simple system which does not require spending lots of money, if any. I thoroughly enjoy working with children with special needs and various learning disabilities. My background is in the field of special education and I am well versed on a variety of interventions that prove successful with students. I have worked with students at all levels and have learned that a one's confidence level plays a large part in their success. When one feels confident about themselves and their ability to learn the material they seem to progress a bit quicker than those who struggle with self-confidence. I will help to build your child's self-confidence as they learn. It can be a fun experience and something your child looks forward to instead of dreading doing their school work. I look forward to working with you and your student(s).

In May, 2015, I graduate from Temple University with a BA in English, completing a degree program begun in 1968. Since I returned to Temple a year ago, I have maintained a straight-A average in all courses. Furthermore, I am honored to receive Temple's Florence Duckworth Award for excellence in scholarship and leadership in English studies. This past year at Temple has been one of the most rewarding and delightful years of my life.Since 2009 I have been a trained volunteer tutor in Adult Basic English (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) sponsored by Delaware County Literacy Council (DCLC). For ABE I have helped adult students with low-level literacy learn to read and write. For ESL I have helped adult legal immigrants master the language of their adopted country, the USA. I love this work so much that I left a successful career in investment accounting in order to complete my degree and teach English to adults. As part of an internship at Temple I am currently teaching an ESL evening class of six students at DCLC until July, 2015.As one can tell from my years of study, I am grounded in the old-fashioned instruction of English grammar and composition. This contributes to my tutoring success because I understand the basics that support a platform of literacy: elements such as the ABCs, sensible but flexible grammar, coherent sentence structure and functional parts of speech. My recent studies at Temple provided the latest research and theory in rhetoric, linguistics and the newest forms of digital literacy. Moreover, my recent experiences in the classroom provided bonding with college-age people in a peer relationship. I connect with the younger generation in special ways that were unavailable to me a year ago. As a result of my experience, I'm quite comfortable in both worlds of the English language: essential fundamentals and the new digital age.My writing skills are strong, as my Duckworth award attests. My first love is American and English literature. I'm a voracious readerso much so that I haven't owned or watched TV in decades. After all, I figure, why watch TV if I can read a book instead?

After nearly forty years as a trial attorney, it is time for me to move to a new phase of my career. Education is not really a ???new phase??? as trying a case to a jury is primarily an educational activity where the classroom is the courtroom. More than anything, a lawyer trying a case is a teacher.Additionally, having taught in a classroom, I know the profound rewards of inspiring older and younger students to become more than they were before they entered. Teaching is about the future. Each student with whom I work gets a learning program specifically geared to his or her needs and goals. As we work together, those goals and needs may change and the student and I will adjust accordingly. The way a student learns best is as unique as their fingerprint and that is the way my instruction is developed for each student.

My mission is to help students learn ways they can nurture themselves in areas they desire tutoring assistance and ultimately build the self confidence and self-efficacy to teach themselves. I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in music, studying bassoon performance and music theory. The journey to reaching there at first involved an attempt at a degree program in the science field, a gap year filled with self-discovery, and many bumps in the road. Coming from a Vietnamese immigrant, low-income family, I grew up learning how to make the most with what I have and how to strive to be better each day. I have always had a passion for helping others be excellent. I have tutored subjects from algebra to English writing to music theory, and it is a process I truly enjoy. Through tutoring sessions tailored to a holistic approach of students' abilities, my hopes are that they will leave sessions knowing they deserve the absolute best for themselves, and that they have the internal grit and drive to achieve their goals. My desire is for my students to leave sessions with me feeling comfortable with who they are, knowing I am an available, supportive resource at all times and feeling ready to take on whatever challenges they face. My vision for tutoring at Varsity Tutors burns with that same enthusiasm.

Tutoring provides me the opportunity to work with students and connect with them in a manner that influences their enjoyment of a subject. My passion is science and math because it explains how the world works, how nature works, and how all the phenomenon around us work. I want all students to enjoy science and math, and understand how they impact us in our daily lives. As I watch the learning process unfold, I am able to watch those connections being made, and nothing brings me greater satisfaction than seeing that moment when a student has that clarity and feels empowered that they mastered something they thought they never could.I take a collaborative approach to teaching to ensure thorough understanding of the material, allowing students to also enjoy the learning process, and focus on pertinent applications of the material extending beyond the scope of a single assignment. I like to break concepts down into smaller, easy-to-manage parts, and then bring them back together once each part is mastered.I earned my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and after 10 years as a police officer, decided to change careers to positively impact people through teaching. I will complete my Master's in Education at the end of the year. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my 4 children, and I am also interested in photography and reading. I have been tutoring science and math for the past year at the local community college.

I grew up in a military family that was forced to relocate every few years, often internationally. As the result I became fluent in Russian, English, Spanish and proficient in French before I turned 18. As a freshman in college (2009), while studying International Studies, one of my classmates asked if I would help her prepare for the test in Advanced Placement Spanish and Literature. I agreed to help and therefore held my first tutoring session, and she ended up acing the test. This is when I found out I had a knack for teaching. My classmate was so happy with her results that she told her friends about it. Word of mouth got around, resulting in more and more students approaching me for help in foreign languages and social sciences, which started my career as a tutor. I began tutoring students in subjects like Spanish, Russian, ESL, as well as Psychology, Political Science, Criminal Justice and International Relations and undergraduate level Criminal law. Because I have been a student myself; I like to believe that I have an easy time relating to my clients and recognizing their educational needs. I find it extremely important that my students have fun during lessons, therefore I try to cater my lesson plans according to each student's individual learning style. I have a great deal of passion for education and the times when I notice results in my students, it makes my job as an educator that much more meaningful and fulfilling. I sincerely love what I do for a living, and I use my life and tutoring experiences to improve as a person and as an educator. It's important to me that my students feel trusted and trusting, and that all of our work takes place in a supportive manner that builds self esteem, while also challenging the students to achieve their goals.
