At some point, learning must become more than just completing homework assignments and shift more towards building capable individuals ready to support and lead society.In high school I grappled with this always wondering why and how what I was learning would serve me in 'Real-Life'. It took me a year of college where I was forced to find and build my own passions, no one was going to do it for me. As a psychology major I learned how to perform research not only in my academic field but in other areas as well. I began taking classes in [business, healthcare, french, biology, engineering, law] figuring out how to make learning fun and most importantly useful. At that time, I became entrepreneurial and wanted to soak up as much knowledge as I could.Around my junior year, I began looking how I could apply my knowledge to the outside work, noticing problems and attempting (earnestly) to solve them. I began going to places none of my friends knew about, attending meetups, hackathons, eventually figuring out other streams of activities that I could use to reinforce my knowledge base.I did not know what I was doing at the time yet I knew that I needed to sharpen my skills and understanding in whatever capacity I could. I want to help young people, like myself, continue learning -- so we can have a significant impact on our communities and the worlds beyond!

Hello! I am Matthew, a former Wall Street analyst and university professor with an NYU Stern MBA in Accounting and Quantitative Finance, CFA Level I, and five FINRA securities licenses. I recently graduated from Temple University where I received a BA in religion, and where I also studied cultural and linguistic anthropology. I have found myself especially fascinated by early Indian Buddhism, and my studies have allowed me to travel to India where I lived in a monastery and studied Buddhist pilgrims' use of Pali (an ancient "dead" language) in their religious practice. I have spent a hefty chunk of my life in school, and so have had a lot of time to think about education and why it can be important. A person can accomplish little without knowledge, and I don't just mean developing the theory of relativity, cracking Egyptian hieroglyphics, or other similarly game-changing feats by brilliant people. We use our knowledge every day to act constructively and cohesively within our society and our environment. The quest for knowledge, then, is one of the most universally important pursuits available to us humans. I have been fortunate enough to contribute to that pursuit for several months now as an SAT and ACT prep tutor, helping students cope with these formidable tests and earn the scores they need to continue their individual quests for knowledge (and, of course, employment) into post-secondary education. I believe that education is an act of sharing knowledge between student and teacher, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge about religion, language, and college entrance exams with you and to letting you share your knowledge with me. But when I'm not sharing or being shared with, I'll be playing drums with several bands in the Philadelphia area and memorizing soliloquies from Shakespeare for the fun of it.

I received my BA from Temple University with a major in Philosophy and my long term career goal is to obtain a PhD in Philosophy so that I can teach at the collegiate level. I received a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and a minor in Public Health from Temple University in 2010. In May of this year, I received a Masters Degree in Biological Sciences from Drexel University. During my time at Drexel University, I worked as a teaching assistant for a graduate level Anatomy course for a year. This included assisting students with cadaver dissections in gross lab, and tutoring students for the didactic portion of the course. Anatomy is not only my favorite course to tutor in, but also my favorite subject in biology. I find I never get bored teaching Anatomy, because even though we all have similar basic anatomical structures, no two bodies are alike. Although I am very passionate about learning, I make sure all my students have fun. During a typical tutoring session, I try to incorporate videos, textbooks, and models to help the student stay engaged. When aiding my students with their writing assignments, I experience a certain frustration at their lack of exploration. No matter the nature of the assignment, students are taught to seek the right answer in the most direct manner. In this age driven by state assessments, students are encouraged to find what???s considered to be the correct answer quickly with little room for exploration or a deeper level of critical thinking. Students are often encouraged to get from point A to point B in a quick and efficient manner without stopping to discover along the way. Although students achieve their goal of completing an assignment in a timely manner, the writing that results lacks originality of thought that can only be discovered through exploration.As an adjunct, I stress the importance of exploration for the good of my students??? creative and academic endeavors. These efforts make both of us not only better students, but help to ensure that we can increase of knowledge in all areas of our lives no matter what path they may take. I believe that teachers who demonstrate curiosity and passion about a subject area motivate students to learn. I believe that W.B. Yeats captured the exhilaration of teaching when he wrote: ???Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.???My philosophy of teaching is to create an environment that allows for supervised exploration. I grew up in a military family that was forced to relocate every few years, often internationally. As the result I became fluent in Russian, English, Spanish and proficient in French before I turned 18. As a freshman in college (2009), while studying International Studies, one of my classmates asked if I would help her prepare for the test in Advanced Placement Spanish and Literature. I agreed to help and therefore held my first tutoring session, and she ended up acing the test. This is when I found out I had a knack for teaching. My classmate was so happy with her results that she told her friends about it. Word of mouth got around, resulting in more and more students approaching me for help in foreign languages and social sciences, which started my career as a tutor. I began tutoring students in subjects like Spanish, Russian, ESL, as well as Psychology, Political Science, Criminal Justice and International Relations and undergraduate level Criminal law.
