I currently live in South East Kansas with my husband and two cats while I am completing Grad School at Pittsburg State University. I adore learning and graduated undergrad with 3 majors! I'm very creative and I'm professionally trained in theater. I've taught theater after school and in summer camp for three years, teaching kids how to be silly and express themselves while also learning responsibility at the same time. I have lived and worked in France where I taught English for 6 months in 2019/2020. My interests are widespread and extensive! More than anything I have a passion for helping students learn how to learn and what styles/methods work best for them! I have worked with students from age 5 to students in their 60s, both in person and virtually to help grasp concepts and improve their understanding of the material! I come from a different background as many, as I was actually in the same spot many of my students are when I was their age. It often shocks my students to hear I was NOT the star pupil and in fact was held back in the third grade and continued struggling until I got to college. This background has allowed me to not only connect with my students on a different level, but also I have been able to share with them my methods of going about problems that are unusual, but effective! This has resulted in a huge increase of their confidence as well as aiding in their schoolwork! My educational background is in psychology and I have lots of experience helping kids with anxiety and learning disabilities to build confidence and understand concepts in a fun and supportive environment!

My name is Tim, and I am a clinical psychologist. My bachelor's degree is in psychology; my master's and doctoral degrees are in clinical psychology. I have worked for 35 years as a clinician, in many different settings and with a variety of problem areas. Along with my clinical work, I have done a significant amount of teaching, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, at a variety of academic settings. Approximately 25-30 years of that experience has been part-time, and one year was full-time. I love teaching and helping people learn and discover things. Psychology is a fascinating and far-ranging subject with myriad applications. Actually, the subject of psychology is relevant to everyone, as we all behave and we all interact with the behavior of others. I love psychology, and I love sharing my knowledge with others.

I love to teach! I believe anyone can learn. A student has to be open to learn though and a great teacher can help to open a mind to that.Learning can be fun and especially when you work one-on-one with someone. The lessons can be focused to exactly what one needs and that really helps things to move along more quickly. After being in education for over 20 years, I am excited to work with new people and to experience teaching in a whole new way!

I truly believe every child can grow, and helping students see that growth in themselves is what I love most. There's nothing better than watching a student gain confidence and have that moment when learning finally clicks - it's worth celebrating! With my experience in elementary classrooms and as an interventionist and instructional coach, I know that every child learns differently. I focus on building strong relationships and getting to know each child as a whole, including their strengths, challenges, and anything that might be getting in the way of learning. I work to create a supportive space where students feel comfortable, encouraged, and ready to give it a try, because learning takes courage, and we're in it together! In our tutoring sessions, I'll meet your child where they are and help them grow into a more confident, successful learner. I'd love the opportunity to support your child's learning journey.

I am a recent graduate of Pittsburg State University, where I majored in Political Science and minored in philosophy. My focus as a tutor primarily covers writing and writing revision. Throughout all four years of college, I worked as a writing center consultant at the PSU Writing Center. As a consultant, I worked with virtually any type of writing assignment, from any field, and at any stage of the writing process. This includes typical writing assignments such as literature reviews, research papers, or persuasive essays, but I would also provide guidance on STEM-based lab reports, automotive diagnostics, entrance essays, philosophical works, and more. I have experience in assisting with any item of the writing process: grammar/sentence structure, focus, development, organization, citations/formatting, Microsoft Word/Google Doc usage, and style. I have tutored primarily fellow undergraduates in my experience, but I also would gain some experience working with graduate students on theses or potential publication entries. One of the biggest reasons I am passionate about tutoring is due to the ubiquitousness of writing and its application in nearly all walks of life. My favorite subject to tutor, I firmly believe that writing is one of the most valuable skills to obtain for any person who wishes to make a contribution to their field, find themselves at a higher position in their job, become a better communicator, or otherwise present their ideas in a clear manner. As the area of communication that allows for the most thought and time before its final form becomes set, the written word can and should become the clearest form of an idea before it reaches permanence. As such, as a tutor, I am determined to make sure those ideas reach that clarity so that they can be understood and then applied to their relevant field, turning an idea into reality. My teaching philosophy stems from this belief; in order to reach that point of clarity, it is important for me to understand and know how to reach the end goal of the other person's thoughts. I ask a lot of questions and tailor my response to the needs and goals of the person I am instructing, knowing that the best strategy is the one that works best for the learner, not necessarily the tutor. When reading or developing a paper, I am always on the lookout for both concerns of the learner as well as issues that the learner may not be aware of; this way, I address both the concerns of the writer, who knows their thoughts and assignment requirements better than I do, while still noticing problems the writer may not have recognized, which ensures that the piece of writing meets both the standards of the writer and the eventual audience. My interests include creative writing/essay writing, video games, movies, reading, metal detecting, and spending time with friends and family. My favorite genre of media is horror, and I love spooky works of any kind, such as The King in Yellow, the Resident Evil series, Midsommar, and more. I am also a big fan of sci-fi works, such as Childhood's End, Fallout, or A Scanner Darkly. I am open to all kinds of work, and I would be thrilled to explore new works or genres at another's suggestion. I also love writing my own works, and I have two published essays; I hope to add to this number one day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors with Pittsburg State University experience understand the university's academic standards, course structures, and expectations firsthand. They've navigated the same coursework and challenges as current students, which means they can offer practical insights into what professors expect and how to succeed in specific classes. This direct familiarity with PSU's curriculum and culture helps them tailor their teaching approach to what actually works at your university.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong backgrounds in PSU's most popular majors and courses, including engineering, business, education, sciences, and mathematics. Many tutors have completed upper-level coursework in their fields and can help with both foundational concepts and advanced topics. Whether you need help with general education requirements or major-specific courses, we can match you with someone who knows the material and the PSU approach to teaching it.

During your first session, a tutor will assess your current understanding, learn about your specific goals (whether that's improving a grade, preparing for an exam, or mastering a difficult concept), and discuss your learning style. They'll use this information to create a personalized plan tailored to your needs. Many students find that this initial conversation helps them feel more confident and gives them a clear roadmap for improvement.

Alumni tutors have already succeeded within PSU's academic environment, so they understand the specific challenges and expectations you're facing. They can share real strategies they used to excel in your courses, introduce you to campus resources you might not know about, and provide encouragement based on their own experience. Having someone who's been through your exact situation can be incredibly motivating and practical.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows a tutor to focus entirely on your individual needs, pace, and learning style—something that's difficult in group settings or crowded office hours. A tutor can identify exactly where you're struggling, adjust explanations on the fly, and provide immediate feedback. Research on learning shows that 1-on-1 instruction significantly accelerates progress compared to group learning, especially when the tutor understands your specific context and goals.

Absolutely. Tutors who attended Pittsburg State University often have experience with the specific exam formats and question styles your professors use. They can help you review material strategically, practice problem-solving under timed conditions, identify gaps in your understanding, and build confidence before test day. Starting exam prep several weeks in advance typically yields the best results.

Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor qualifications, and your specific needs. Varsity Tutors offers flexible scheduling and package options to fit different budgets and academic calendars. We recommend starting with a consultation to discuss your goals and get a personalized quote—many students find that investing in tutoring early in the semester prevents costly grade problems later.

Simply tell us your major, the subject or course you need help with, and your availability. Varsity Tutors will connect you with a tutor who has PSU experience and expertise in your specific area. Most students meet with their tutor within a few days of signing up, and you can start seeing improvement quickly with consistent, personalized instruction.
