I am a graduate of Colby College in Waterville Maine, where I received my BA in Biology. Since then I have taught high school Biology and Chemistry in a public high school in a suburb of Boston. I received my Masters of Education from Fitchburg State University, as well as an advanced degree in Educational Leadership and Management. Along with being a teacher, I was a football and baseball coach in Massachusetts for the past 9 years. I believe that teaching academic subjects and sports go hand in hand, and I am equally passionate about teaching and coaching.My favorite part of being a teacher is the one on one interactions with students. Whether it is on the field or in the classroom, I love the feeling when students have that "Ah ha!" moment, and finally get a difficult concept. I have experience with teaching all different types of learners, and students with various learning disabilities. I love to differentiate instruction in order to fit each student's unique learning style.I love tutoring science, particularly biology and chemistry because these subjects require a unique way of thinking. Instead of committing facts to memory, I challenge students to learn patterns, to use critical thinking skills and to question their reasoning in order to come up with a plan to solve scientific problems. I believe that scientific thinking is a skill that can help students in all facets of their life.When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy being active. My hobbies include going for walks with my puppy, spending time outside, and playing and watching sports. I played football in college, and I still play softball and flag football.

I'm an Australian-American current college student who's been tutoring since high school. I did the IB in Australian high school and am now a junior at Colby College. I am currently completing an MFA in Creative Writing at Columbia University, and before that I majored in English in undergrad. Since as long as I can remember reading and writing have been my principal passions, and I've been teaching, tutoring, and writing since completing college. I've taught ESL students in South Korea, and back in the US I've worked with learners of all ages from elementary school students to adults. In addition I've done some work as a freelance journalist. My teaching specialties include reading comprehension, vocabulary, essay writing, creative writing, and textual analysis.

I am currently an assistant English teacher living in Seville, Spain. I graduated from Colby College in May with a major in Education and American Studies and graduated with honors in both. I have lots of experience tutoring in schools and online and assistant teaching in different classrooms. I spent last summer tutoring 2 Spanish speaking children ages 10 and 11 in English. I was also hired by my college to be a remote tutor for a professor's kids ages 8 and 11 in all subjects. I also was a tutor and mentor for a 6th grade student at Waterville Maine Junior High and tutored her in all subjects as well (math, science, social studies, english). I am passionate about helping students who are struggling to learn online right now and I have lots of strategies and tricks for creating engaging and fun virtual tutoring sessions. I have always loved working with kids because I have four siblings and I also know how important it is for students to have online sessions with someone kind and encouraging.

As a New Yorker born and raised, I'm very well acquainted with the intense demands of the NYC school system (both public and private). I'm here to help students understand that they have what it takes to be a solid writer, and as a result, hopefully, lessen the pressure and stress that I know that students today are under. After a two-year stint in high school leading a course aimed to help ease the transition of incoming freshman into my school, I knew I wanted to continue working with students in whatever way I could moving forward.In college, I enrolled in a writing-tutoring program that landed me two jobs on my campus's writing center. As a writing fellow, each semester I worked closely with students in a freshman writing-intensive English class aimed to bring everyone up to the same collegiate writing level. As a writing tutor, I held general weekly office hours that were open to any student seeking a tutoring session for any stage of their writingprocess across all subjects. In addition to these tutoring positions, I also worked on Colby's student newspaper The Colby Echo as the head copy editor.What I enjoy the most about tutoring is seeing students realize their own potential and gain confidence as they start to discover what they're truly capable of. My coursework within my major was concentrated in both Middle Eastern and U.S. History. In my senior year at Colby, I wrote my thesis on imperialism in the Middle East during the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly focusing the First World War and its aftermath in the region. I received several competitive grants to conduct primary research in London and Oxford archives for this project, including the prestigious Goldfarb Center's student research fellowship. Once completed, my thesis was granted the award for the best senior essay in History that year. Additionally, I won Colby's annual prize for the best History student both my junior and senior year. I owe much of my academic success to my incomparable professors/mentors/advisors within the History Department, and now, as a tutor, I strive to provide the same level of enthusiastic support and encouragement to my own students.Beyond my history studies, I spent a semester during college at the University of Burgundy in Dijon, allowing me to develop my deep understanding of both French language and culture. While on Colby's campus, I spent much of my spare time working as an assistant to one of my professors on his manuscript, as both an editor and a researcher. During my spare time, I sang in the chamber choir, cooked, wrote poetry, and read (too many favorite books to count, but right up there are Brideshead Revisited, Persuasion, and Love in the Time of Cholera). Since moving to New York, I've added yoga to my hobbies roster. I began studying French when I turned eleven. My greatest strength as a tutor is connecting academic subject matter to life outside of the classroom. When I was a student, I found that my French coursework became much more engaging when I understood its use and broader context within the Francophone world. This is the type of knowledge that I plan to share with my own students. What they are studying can actually be exciting and useful.I was lucky enough to study abroad twice during college. Living in France dramatically improved my language skills. I became a much more confident speaker, and developed a sense of spoken French outside of the classroom. My real passion for French comes through when I am speaking it. Confidence is one of the key factors in mastering a language, and it is a trait I wish to impart as a tutor.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Colby College in 2007 with a degree in French Language and International Relations, I jumped on a plane to Uganda in pursuit of a less conventional office. In the years since I have lived, worked, traveled and taught on rivers and in classrooms around world.As a teacher at New River Academy from 2010-11 and World Class Academy from 2011-14 I introduced students to the world of English Literature inside the classroom and mentored them through challenges and intricacies of living and traveling with a small group abroad, encouraging them to find ways to pursue their passions. My time with NRA and WCA furthered my belief in the value of experiential learning, and my view that education should be holistic and foster creative thinking. It is one of the reasons I am most enjoy tutoring, as it provides the ability to work one on one and to shape education to the needs and interests of the student.While I tutor a broad range of subjects, from Spanish to test prep, it is literature and writing that I am most passionate about as I feel they provide individuals the opportunity to connect with the world around them and give shape and voice to their experiences and opinions.Outside of education, I pursue whitewater kayaking competitively, and was a member of the US freestyle team this past year. I am a recent pre-med graduate from Colby College.
