In his book Democracy and Education, philosopher John Dewey acknowledges that "since growth is the characteristic of life education is all one with growing; it has no end beyond itself. The criterion of the value of school education is the extent in which it creates a desire for continued growth and supplies means for making the desire effective in fact" (62). These words begin to define why I have chosen to devote my life to this cause. Much of our culture supports the idea that education is merely a means to an end. Many of us trudge through our years in the university with the singular goal of becoming a doctor, lawyer, accountant, or scientist, and think once we achieve this title, our education is over. Yet we couldn't be more wrong. Education is the key to the survival of democracy and the development of the self. As educational leaders John Dewey and Paulo Freire believe healthy democracy requires educated citizens capable of thinking critically and communicating their ideas both clearly and respectfully. As an educator, I believe it is my purpose to equip students to participate in democracy and see themselves as global citizens with a responsibility to their fellow human beings. In this manner, I base much of my approach to education in the theories of critical and expressive pedagogy, believing in the importance of developing the individual voice of the student in the context of the world around them.

Greetings! You have, through sheer virtue of your reading this document, decided to consider tutoring as an auxiliary means of learning, to which I applaud you. It is my firm belief, established through both observation and experience, that one-on-one teaching is an excellent (I would argue essential) way to bolster one's learning; for as much as the broad curricula of the day is expertly designed to fit the learning needs of the masses, it will, by nature, leave gaps in the micro-cognition of each student. This is where I and many others come in: to fill those gaps. For true mastery of a subject or field, I believe that having a teacher to take the time and effort with a student towards detailed learning can only, in time, prove beneficial in the grander understanding of a given topic. Every student (everyone, truly, for are we not all students?), in varying degrees of severity, learns differently, takes in the world around them differently, and manifests that information differently. No one teaching method could ever account for the infinite variable of personality and general humanness; hence the importance of one-on-one teaching. I take my position as a tutor seriously for this reason; I approach students with the understanding that they will not all be the same, and that each requires consideration for their respective characters, abilities, and desires. In short, I offer students a chance to learn above the common tide.

I received my Bachelor of Music in Commercial Music (Voice) with a Concentration in Music Business (Honors) from Belmont University. I tutor Music Theory, Aural Skills, Voice, String Bass, and beginner Guitar and Piano. I have 9 years of experience working with students ages 1422, and nearly two decades of experience working with children ages 312 through live music performances and literacy programs at local schools and libraries alongside my mom. I am also a working musician with nearly 20 years of performance experience. When I work with students, I always begin with the individual. I strive to help students connect the concepts we explore to the music they love, helping them maintain their joy for music while finding their own voice and realizing their goals. My mantra with all of my students is, "We are all beginners at something." I especially love working with the French language.I have just completed a Bachelor of Arts in French from Belmont University and am pursuing teaching opportunities related to this degree. I also spent a semester in Angers, France, completing classes at the University located there. I primarily focused on translation, which is one of my favorite things to do with French. I have been lucky enough to get to travel extensively around Europe, which has greatly enriched my language abilities.
