I graduated with a BA from Allegheny College in 2019 with a double major in English and Theatre and a minor in Education Studies. While I was at Allegheny, I was a tutor for the America Reads program where I was a classroom tutor in all subjects for a 6th grade class for all 4 years. I then graduated from Pitt's MAT program in 2020, and earned my English 7-12 Teaching Certificate, and completed my student teaching in an 8th grade Language Arts class. This year, I have been a long term substitute in a 6th grade English class for the entire school year. I also have experience tutoring for SATs and up through 8th grade level math. My main interests are in English and Literature, but I also enjoy Theatre and Drama, skiing, traveling, and knitting. I would describe myself as energetic, hardworking and friendly!

I'm passionate about helping students because I love watching people grow into their potential and become more confident in their abilities. There's something uniquely rewarding about seeing someone connect the dots for themselves and knowing you helped make that moment possible. While I haven't worked with students in a traditional academic setting, I've taught numerous tennis lessons over the years, which taught me how to adjust my approach for different personalities and skill levels breaking down complex movements, offering encouragement, and celebrating progress. I also spent a good deal of time as a student working with tutors myself, which gave me a strong appreciation for how effective one-on-one learning can be. I bring that same energy and flexibility to academic tutoring, where building trust and tailoring each session to the individual is just as important. I graduated from Allegheny College with a major in Political Science and a minor in Spanish, and I currently tutor U.S. and world politics, U.S. and world history, and introductory Spanish. My favorite subject to tutor is U.S. Government and Politics I'm always excited to help students understand how political systems work, why they matter, and how they impact daily life. I believe that understanding government helps students become more informed, empowered citizens. My teaching philosophy is centered around curiosity, connection, and confidence. I aim to make each session engaging and student-led, using real-world examples, conversation, and the occasional creative analogy to keep things relatable. I focus on meeting students where they are, adapting my approach to their pace, and encouraging them to ask questions freely. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy playing golf, reading across a variety of genres, and cycling around New York City especially when I get to explore new neighborhoods or scenic routes. I bring that same sense of exploration and patience to my tutoring sessions, always aiming to make learning feel both structured and full of discovery.

I graduated from Allegheny College with a BS in Chemistry last Spring. I am very passionate about chemistry and will begin working for my PhD this fall at the University of Maryland. In the meantime, I am excited to be back in Manhattan to tutor students in chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics. I have had a love for math and science for a long time and believe that the problem solving skills needed to crack these subjects are critical for students looking to be successful in whatever field they choose to pursue. For this reason, I push my students to not only master the material, but also teach strategies to recognize problem structures that will help them tackle new material in the future. In my spare time I enjoy playing soccer and traveling. I have spent a good deal of time in South America and am always looking for excuses to return. I truly enjoyed tutoring students in chemistry during college, but as a graduate of Beacon High School in Manhattan I am excited to be back in the City and working with New York's next round of science and math enthusiasts.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth Krochka, but you can call me Beth. I'm a 23 year old Allegheny College graduate with a passion for learning and teaching. One day, I'd like to teach and I hope that working with Varsity Tutors and my clients will help me prepare to be a better teacher. I've always loved school, mainly because I had teachers who were extremely inspired by what they were teaching. They are why I think passion is the key to teaching and I hope to share my passion for learning with my clients. I think that a good teacher or tutor can be the difference between learning being a chore or an opportunity. Passion is contagious and once a student or client can view the information in a new light, what was once impossible becomes a conquered challenge.

Besides having fun, going out, playing video games, traveling to different parts of the city, reading, playing billiards (or pool) and everything else. I am just a regular college graduate looking to advance and expand my knowledge to fulfill my career goal as an engineer. As of now, I am in possession of two degrees. In 2014 I received my Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics at Allegheny College, located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. I recently received my certificate of completion of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design in the New York City College of Technology Green Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative Certificate Program in Brooklyn, NY. As of now, I work multiple jobs mostly in education and tutoring. For starters, I have been tutoring since June 2013. I work with a group of students that are widely diverse in age, grade level and subject difficulty. My experience with teaching made me realize how much merit there is to helping other students succeed with their academic endeavors. Personally, I know how it is to struggle with difficult subjects and having no one to assist in understanding the concepts better and I want to make sure nobody else falls in that predicament. For as long as I can remember, Mathematics has always been my favorite subject. Hence the reason I went to college to study it in the first place. And as of now I have been teaching and tutoring students on Mathematics and Science, working with people such as yourselves on an individual level to make sure you understand all of the subject material clearly and concisely. My teaching philosophy is to explain everything simply and thoroughly along with some practice both inside and outside the classroom. As of now, my teaching style has been very flexible to accommodate every student's individual learning needs and styles to ensure full efficiency. Besides being flexible, I also like to explain things in an alternative perspective to show students different ways of thinking outside the box. My father always used to tell me never do a half done job for anybody. If it is worth doing, it should be done right. As your tutor/ teacher, my job is not done until you succeed. I look forward to working with you all and I will help you to the best of my abilities.

Hi! My name is Evan, I graduated from Allegheny College in May 2015 with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Psychology, and after graduation I moved to Pittsburgh to begin my career. Besides tutoring for Varsity Tutors, I work as a Laboratory Technician 2 for PPG in Springdale, PA. My laboratory uses fundamental aspects of chemistry to run testing on electrocoat paints in order to determine their respective viabilities as manufacturing products. I love what I do! I currently work 40 hours a week in my Lab Technician position, but would be available after 6 pm as well as weekends (when scheduled in advance).I have worked as a Biology tutor for both the AP Biology Test as well as the SAT Subject Test for Biology for the last two summers through Maine Prep, one of Maine's premier test-preparation companies. At Maine Prep I learned about what it takes to be a successful tutor, and I also learned about the satisfaction that one can gain from helping students understand previously unknown concepts. Now that I'm in the Pittsburgh area I would love to continue expanding on my tutoring experience- I enjoy working with students and someday I would like to be a Professor in Biology!

I recently retired from a 35+ year finance career working as an analyst and in project management. Upon further reflection, I prefer to call this next phase of my life as a repurposing rather than a retirement. I have a Bachelor of Arts in International Economics from Allegheny College and am a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. I am currently volunteering in the Adult Literacy program at the Brooklyn Public Library in Brooklyn, NY where I tutor sections in English, math, and financial literacy. I have found great satisfaction in assisting others in developing their skills in these areas. In addition to tutoring in the above literacy subjects, I also have strong Microsoft Excel skills developed throughout my finance career and supplemented by outside course work. This background gives me the ability to customize student training in specific areas that would best meet the student's needs. My teaching style is to take the subject matter, break it down into digestible and logical parts and then provide relevant examples or application of the material so that the student can better understand the concepts. Also, my consideration and understanding of the student's desired outcome from the tutoring sessions is critical to their success. My initial experience teaching began with coaching youth travel team basketball. Basketball can be a somewhat complex sport. It can be challenging to explain the different offensive and defensive concepts to young players while at the same time keeping the game fun and engaging. Some of my most rewarding and valuable experiences were with players who initially struggled but were then able to incorporate what they learned in practice and translate that to their play on the court. In addition, over the course of my finance career, I have coached and mentored many colleagues in the finance profession. I view the opportunity to tutor students as a continuation of these prior teaching-learning experiences, and I aim to bring out the best in a student's learning process.

I graduated from Allegheny College with an English degree and high honors in 2009. I went on to Penn State to study biochemistry and premed. My schooling has been diverse! While I can teach various subjects, these are my favorites:1) ADMISSIONS ESSAYS! You heard it, I love this challenging form of writing. My previous clients often came to me frustrated and uncertain where to begin. After tutoring, though, they were admitted with great essays. I'd say my tutoring style is thorough and demanding, especially for those applying for reach or Ivy League schools. I'm also convinced, though, that you will have fun and let your personality shine through!2) Organic Chemistry and Physics. I actually struggled with science in high school. After high school physics, I was convinced I was "terrible at it" and swore I would "never take science again." Despite this, I had felt drawn to science since childhood, and I had a nagging desire to learn it. I finally decided to gather up my courage and study biochemistry at Penn State. I had to learn step-by-step through hard work, but I ultimately did great, and I learned the material very thoroughly. Who knew physics would turn out to be my favorite class?I can also tutor general chemistry, biochemistry, biology, genetics, and statistics, and I can teach writing in all its forms (grammar, English essays, scientific writing, etc.) Finally, if you need a break from all these intense subjects, I could always introduce you my two favorite hobbies- piano and salsa dancing!

It has been said that, If you can't explain something simply, you don't know it well enough. In my experience as a longtime student, I have found this quote to be accurate. My strength as a tutor is that I have the ability to break down complex ideas and language into as simple a package as possible. Both as a successful student and in teaching I have found myself to be adept at using this particular skill.I graduated from Allegheny College with a BA in English and a minor in Economics. I have always enjoyed learning and have a passion for sharing my knowledge with others. As an tutor, my favorite subjects to teach are Algebra and English. I consider those skills to be the building blocks of a solid academic foundation for High School and beyond. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading whenever possible, especially fantasy and science fiction novels. I also am an avid board game player, from Chess to Settlers of Catan.
